Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is a bit too long for a family movie, with some unnecessary complications toward the end, and it's not quite up to the “Paddington” level of movie adaptations of classic children's books. But it is a warm-hearted family film with great musical numbers that will make another generation of kids hopefully search the attic on the chance that they might find a singing crocodile.
For kids, this won’t matter much, and Lyle is good enough that it may well have staying power at sleepovers and family movie nights for years to come. It is, however, disappointing to see a film with oodles of potential fail to stick the landing, especially when the right moves are obvious.
This movie is awesome. We laughed, we cried, we danced, we sang. It is a really heartwarming story, and the kids absolutely LOVED it. I even felt moved by the messages of the film myself -- though made for kids, the emotional pull of the film still feels relevant and compelling even as an adult. I honestly recommend seeing this one in theaters because the musical elements and generaly vibe feel meant for the big screen and great sound system!
Along with a few bouncy numbers from “The Greatest Showman” duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Bardem is the driving force behind “Lyle,” and the train loses major steam without its kooky conductor.
Pasek and Paul’s songs end up having to do much of the emotional heavy lifting, and the rest of the film feels cobbled together from random parts scavenged from other kids’ movies and pop culture ephemera.
The whole picture is an exercise in obvious effort, try, try, trying really hard to win the audience’s affection. However it only succeeds in trying the audience’s patience. It’s a trial.
A final word about Bardem: He’s simply terrific. With his shaggy curly hair, exaggerated showmanship, athletic dance moves and operatic gestures, Hector is part Willy Wonka and part Gene Kelly — it’s Bardem’s most off-the-rails performance since his turn as a James Bond villain in “Skyfall.”
Heartwarming family movie that while predictable, has a great message for kids and adults alike. The acting is very good and the soundtrack is even better! It was so good that my 11 year old wants to go see it again and we already have plans to do so! Its a must see!
Pois aqui, ficou a desejar.
Went with my young niece to watch this movie with an open mind. To say this film is pretentious, bland and boring is a vast understatement. First problem, casting a pop singer with no Broadway experience once so ever is a cheap shot at attracting teenage girls to this movie at the expense of the larger audience. Shawn Mendes simply does not have the range for an animated character... his voice holds one monotone. This may explain why the crocodile doesn't speak. Consequentially, the rest of the cast - which has some veterans of the screen - are trying to overcompensate for his shortcomings thus overacting their roles. Music is uninspired and the story line predictable. Given the high cost of movie theatre tickets nowadays, I wish I saved my money. This movie should have gone straight to streaming.
