I did expect a little more screen time from Mariah Carey's character Ms. Weiss, but her performance was really good and Gabourey Sidebeh was great as Precious and of course Mo'Nique was unbelievable as Mary, I mean to see her go from The Parkers, The Queens of Comedy and small supporting roles in movies to this is just pure talent. She was great in Domino and Shadwboxer, but she had small supporting roles, and in this movie she had a supporting role, but she completely stole the movie and every scene she was in which is why I know she will the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and Gabby will definitely get nominated for Best Actress Expand

It is very interesting thePrecious is a terrific movie, so visceral and brutally real that will touch your heart. Every detail is perfectly calculated to demonstrate what life truly is; from what they eat to the appearance of the mother. It is very interesting the dynamic of the film, because the protagonist lives with every single problem that a human could have, which by the way gather all the complicated issues of contemporary society; but continue living only escaping from the reality, to a world where she is famous, everybody loves her, with the perfect boyfriend and a careful and lovely mother. Because of that the picture is constructed within three worlds, the horrible present (the movie), the repressed past (in flashbacks) and the fantastic other reality (breaking the flashbacks). That is why especial technical aspects are used to narrate the story, like slow motion shots, changes in illumination and audio-visual counterpoint (when in a fight it sounds quiet music). Another captivating thing is the evolution of the protagonist in the story, showing that is possible to take every little thing that happen to you, without mattering if is either good or bad, and learn something about it, because things happen for a reason. Lee Daniels definitely made a masterpiece, the screenplay is astonishing and the performance of the cast is amazing. I mean Gabourey Sidibe is awesome, but MoNique is heartbreaking, one of the best performances I ever seen in my life. Life is hard, life is short, life is painful, but because everything is a gift from the universe, life is precious. Expand

The sight of a morbidly obese girl who runs out of a chicken joint with a ten-piece bucket without paying for it, practically courts laughter, and for some moviegoers, who prey on the weak, just may hoot, just may holler. "Precious" is about The sight of a morbidly obese girl who runs out of a chicken joint with a ten-piece bucket without paying for it, practically courts laughter, and for some moviegoers, who prey on the weak, just may hoot, just may holler. "Precious" is about a teacher trying to help a girl reclaim her name from an abusive mother. For now, let's call her Clareece, and this child of rape, undoubtedly, stands out, but in the worst possible way. At school, her first day at an alternative school, Clareece disposes of the fried poultry container in the trash: cause for laughter follows. Breasts, thighs, drumsticks, wings. She ate it all. The moviegoer can see the gristle around her lips. And when Clareece takes a seat beneath a poster that promotes self-esteem, she throws up: cause for more laughter follows, and perhaps, a little exasperation. "Precious: Based on the Novel by Sapphire" has a self-awareness about audience perception as it pertains to its protagonist. It knows that moviegoers are more accustomed to trim and fit white girls than the dark-skinned girth of Gabourey Sidibe, and that includes the titular character herself, which this twenty-six-year-old newcomer portrays. In her bedroom, Clareece looks into the mirror and sees white too. She sees Carrie White at the prom. Let me explain. Inexplicably, late in "Precious", Joanna(Yosha Roquemore) starts to laugh at the blood on her classmate and the blanket that's wrapped around the baby, following the girl's domestic dispute with her mother Mary(Monique). (Things fly around, but here, it's not telekinesis.) It's the same sort of cruel laughter that befalls the Sissy Spacek character in the 1976 Brian DePalma classic, after John Travolta drenches the prom queen with pig blood. (Incidentally, Mary forces her daughter to eat some poorly prepared pigs' feet.) By the end of the movie, the mother's tyranny over her daughter is over, and the teacher wins. It's a bittersweet victory. While Clareece redefines Mary's baby nickname for her on the terms of this newly emancipated woman, she learns how life itself is precious, and for her, fleeting. Expand

When you read about the theme of this film, an obese teenage girl, illiterate, constantly abused physically and emotionally by her mother, and pregnant with her second child after being raped (again) by her father, you think "heavy melodrama". This film is by no means "light" but it's far from being a melodrama. This story feels "real", even for us who have never experienced what Precious calls everyday life, and this is partially to do with the excellent casting.
Everyone in this film does a marvellous job, but the person that really excelled, in my opinion, was Mo'Nique; she plays a horrible creature which you have just gotta hate, and she nailed the role of the abusive, angry, lazy and jealous mother, right down to the part where she admits everything she did was because she wanted to be loved. No, you don't get to feel sorry for her, that's the brilliance of this performance. What you do realise is that this terrible transformation can happen to anyone, and that's the scary part.
The only reason I didn't give this film a higher score was because I found it to bit a too slow-paced for my liking. As for the ending, it was surprisingly uplifting and left you with a sense of optimism.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Precious is precious, but she doesn't know it. How could she, after being abused by her own family members for so long? Her struggles are absolutely justified and we really see how. All she wants is to be white and skinny – neither of which she is. Eventually Precious needs help and attends this alternative school. It's good for her and has people that are genuinely kind, much more so than the people that were in her life before.

Precious is pregnant with her second child. She's never had a boyfriend. She gets raped by her own father. It's absolutely heartbreaking that people are disgusted with her for being pregnant instead of getting her help. When Precious gets in situations that are really horrible and traumatizing, she spaces out into a situation where she's amazing and glamorous and beautiful. She just needs help bringing that part of her out, which is something that her teacher Ms. Rain helps with. She has unwavering patience and kindness to these kids that may not have any other positive influences in their lives excpet for her.

The only thing that Precious's family seems to care about is getting their welfare. Not about her baby with down syndrome, not about Abdul. The social worker even checks in on them but it's all a facçade, but this 17 year-old girl can't do anything about it. "Why people that barely know me should be nicer to me than my mother and father?" It's the truth. Her teacher helps her get her life back together after fleeing her home in fear, and she's right, her teacher hardly knows her. It's not right but it's real. Precious has had a very hard life, but through the help of people not in her family and her determination, she can fight through the HIV and get an education with her kids. I believe in her.

What makes this drama attractive is its format that gives it the appearance of a documentary, although it is not. The main character immediately catches our attention, so it is impossible to show indifference. One more than duty seen immediately.

Sidibe and Mo'nique plays quite a long unbroken tennis game, the judges had to side for Sidibe, but personally, Monique stole the show for me.

Precious

Daniels doesn't have Spike Lee's aggression nor Barry Jenkins's cut throat vocab. What Lee Daniels has, is warmth. Warmth so incredibly moving and cozy that it rubbles you down when it fully embraces your mistakes. Yes. Flaws are his way in. With a balanced world that isn't overdosed by medication behavior, the obvious political correct expectations aren't even touched to fight a fair fight. Also, there is a whole new dimension to be explored in here and figuring out a way to resist the inevitable judging eyes, Gabourey Sidibe is dipped in plethora of troubles to come out off in here. And this is quite a big mountain to climb upon and if it would be just us watching her climb, it wouldn't be quite as engaging as it is.

Daniels convinces us to join the journey and he is a real trickster for he spreads crumbles of bread for everyone of varied appetite. The writing is really strong, especially the narration that mostly drives and guides the film, it is steady and informative, something every writers aspires to have. The hyphenated dialogues that mostly endorses cussing and rage spewed with sassiness does not only leave a jarring impression but also a levity that paints the practicality in a fight ensued in a house between a family.

Another tasteful ingredient sprinkled out is eerie camera work and dream sequences to express the views clearly without straining in the stick, it all hinges upon, which is the genre it claims to be that never derails. Precious unfortunately could never be rare, with dark spirits hovering around the film, it leaves a scar on you after it consumes a lot from you, and offering a cathartic finale, it is tipped towards the balance of an example of good filmmaking- Daniels is at his best.

Deeply intense, it is a film that thrills us, too, for the way the characters are worked, in terms of their psychology and feelings. The script, brilliantly written, is based on an autobiographical book and tells the story of a young woman, of humble origins and few studies, who was abused by her father and had children with him. The film tells how she clung to an alternative school and the opportunity to learn to get rid of a terrible and destructive life. Although the value of the prizes is always very relative and sometimes unfair, it is worth mentioning that the film won two Oscars (Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay) and was nominated for four more statuettes (Best Editing, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Film).

Lee Daniels' direction was able to give a coherent, intelligent and skillful development, both to the story and to the characters, gradually revealing their internal motivations, feelings and dramas. Several figures pass through the life of the young protagonist, some of them very striking - a despicable father, an abusive mother - and others luminous - the school teacher, the male nurse. There are others that represent the promise of a better future, like her children, at the same time the reason for her to fight for a better life and the prize to be achieved in that fight. And there are characters that, clearly, get in the way and sink into the life they lead. It is not a happy film, nor is there a happy ending for everyone here.

The cast deserves collective applause for the work they have done. Gabourey Sidibe was very young and little known when she made this film, but she proved to be a promise for the talent shown and for her intense, credible, committed and serious performance of a character who had everything to become nauseating if the actor lacked the ability to avoid it. And this is even more remarkable if we consider that it was the first cinematographic work by the actress who, however, has been more active in the television series. Equally intense and impressive, Mo'Nique's work deserves applause for the courageous way in which she gave herself to a very difficult task: giving life to the most horrible character in the film in a way that moves us and makes us truly feel sorry for her, not hatred. Personally, I loved the way she made the character and I highly value her delivery and professionalism. Mariah Carey was also up to the challenge and gave us an excellent job.

Technically, it is a very discreet film, which gives the story told and the characters the necessary space to develop as they deserve. Cinematography is elegant and the sets and costumes are within what we could expect. The soundtrack also doesn't have much room to stand out, discreetly fulfilling its role.

Precious Jones is an illiterate, obese 16-year-old teenager living with her abusive mother throwing the weight of her own past sins on her (literally as she often abuses her physically). She is pregnant with her second child, conceived, like the first one, by being raped by her father. You would expect this to be the part where I would say "but [insert uplifting undertone here]". Unfortunately, Lee Daniels does not dramatize any of the above situations. He often treats them with the passive aggressive tone of the lead character, who, being born in a hopeless environment, is almost accept-ant of her fate.

In the same way, there is no need to dramatize anything in this movie, as everything is bad enough. More so, Precious' desperation for a happy life is often characterized with humor through her over-the-top ideal life fantasies with her "light-skinned boyfriend" by her side. Like I said, there is no hope for Precious on the horizon except the two women, the teacher at a special school and a social worker. Emotions get to them slowly, but that is only because, as Precious said at the end of the movie, "I like you, but you can't handle me". But yet again, this is not hope, these are just people doing their jobs. Sure, there are moments, pockets of happiness, like when Precious learns to read and write, and the ending in which she finally claims both her children, yet these are blank. As blank as the bad moments are, treated with the same style of soundtrack and the same passive-aggressiveness.

This equal treatment cements the entire undertone which Lee Daniels presents with this picture. This is not a dramatic story, this is not a victimization and a cry for help, this is simply life and how bad it can get.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a very dark and gritty urban drama - there's no feelgood factor here, thats for sure. It covers some sensitive topics but I feel it does this competently. It seemed like (to my non-expert eyes, of course) quite a realistic film, painting a picture of a very fractured 'family' situation and shining a light on a case of sadly quite disturbing abuse. I try to avoid spoilers but I don't think this could be covered properly (or fairly to warn those curious about it) without mentioning that. Given there are some depictions of both physical and sexual abuse, this is a very sensitive area for some people and thus its not something that will obviously appeal to all(!), its not a film to watch for any kind of entertainment value clearly but what it does do is to tell a story about someone who is shown to be in a state of crisis regarding their self identity - someone who doesn't know who to believe, their mother or their teacher, someone doubtful and ultimately rather lost. The credits mention that the film is dedicated to all the people out there like Precious and that says it all - there more than likely are many people who have come from such backgrounds and who could relate to the story, sadly. It would be wrong to gloss over such harrowing ground I suppose, if you think of the film industry as in part serving the purpose to tell peoples stories, to sometimes speak out to, or about, those who have perhaps less of a voice, to portray moving narratives - this clearly ticks those boxes. I was left thinking about the impact that the constant strongly worded dialogue between Precious' mother and her, had on her (had this not been a film but real) - it is rather thought provoking, highlighting the effect constant taunts can have.

This is very much a film you watch which makes you count your blessings and perhaps puts thing into perspective for you. There was a trend in the 90s for films about deprived inner city schools and the pupils behaviour challenging teachers etc. (for example 'Dangerous Minds') but this is much more the other way around, with Precious appearing to be quite shy at heart, although she does have one or two physical altercations but only when provoked. I wouldn't like to say more, so as I don't provide too many spoilers. I liked the scenes that depict her daydreams, which are shown as almost animations appearing out of elements within scenes in the 'real world' - a clever technique thats hard to describe but I thought seemed quite effective. The actress also voices a voice over at times, giving you an insight into how she felt, what she questioned and things at certain points.

Its quite a bittersweet watch but for what it is, its a well made film that does rather 'pack a punch', not being afraid to cover some controversial ground without seeming especially exploitative. I was relieved that while very strong and somewhat explicit language was used, the sex references/scenes weren't perhaps as graphic as they could have been, so it wasn't maybe as distasteful or, as I say, exploitative, as it had the potential to be, which would have cheapened it somewhat. What it does well is to tell the story and that really is the main thing. As a viewer, its rather frustrating to watch as you can tell she is in a bad situation, things are stacked against her and it clearly won't be easy for her to change and you can feel her longing to become 'something', to be popular, famous, even just liked - to be someone, as so many hundreds of thousands of people in New York (where the film is set) and elsewhere no doubt do - anyone who doesn't feel sorry for Precious must be rather heartless. I also found it interesting that her weight played a part in the way she was being controlled by her mother, her continually putting her down, telling her she'll never be anything and all the rest of it. There's at least one scene that depicts her frustration in relation to food and the way its used to control her.

All things considered, you might think it ironic that she's referred to as 'Precious', particularly considering her mothers less than loving attitude towards her and she does indeed (rather mockingly) refer to her by that nickname. I think this nickname is a reminder of sorts not to judge a book by its cover and it also hints at her underlying more fragile, sensitive nature. I should mention that the dialogue is a little mumbled in parts, so if you struggle at all with urban 'ghetto'/US slang type dialects, then you may struggle a bit at times to follow some of it, though I got the gist of it but there's always subtitles if necessary. This film is based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire, although I haven't read the novel so I can't comment on how true to the book it is.

The word precious, which is also the title of the film, is perfect for this film. This movie has it all, from great subject matter to amazing cinematography, Calculated and coherent screenplay, Proper editing with the right music, an attractive and promising direction from "Daniels", which promises to see other good films from him. But beyond this is the brilliant acting of the actors. Flawless performances in a powerful triangle of three impressive women have made the film impressive. Gabourey Sidibe, In the role of "Precious", although it is his first film experience, it is very impressive and excellent. She is amazing and was nominated for an Oscar for this role. Although she did not win the Oscar, she really deserved it. Mo'Nique portrays an obscenity and violent mother and a failed woman so powerfully that it impresses everyone and leaves no hesitation in awarding her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Attractive and powerful "Paula Patton” appears in the role of Mrs. Blue and is impossible to imagine the film without his presence in the film. The film was nominated for six Oscars and won two Oscars in 2010. Also, at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, he won the Jury and Audience Award. This movie is an original cinematic work full of human suffering and the sparks of hope that sprout in the heart of man to find his worth. It really deserved to be among the ten best movies of 2009.
