First off, the landscape shots and the actors are absolutely awesome. Also the dialogues are pretty good with dark irish humour.

So why only 7 points? The story was not believable for me. I understood that the older friend was going through some kind of "end life crisis". But therefore ending a long lasting friendship and cutting off fingers? No way...it just feels constructed and not realistic at all.

However, the weak story is somewhat compensated by the irish atmosphere on a small island which is conveyed very well. Also, the actors are really good and the landscape is beautiful. And yes, dialogues are sometimes really funny.

I felt deeply exposed through these unfulfilled characters to our shared vulnerability and limitations. Uncannily intimate acting by the 4 main characters, that I am beginning to believe after decades of watching good film, can only be accomplished by the Irish. My deep respect goes to the meticulous mind of Martin McDonagh. Expand

The Golden Globe award winner is typical award fare; well acted and shot but will leave normal viewers scratching their heads. Kudos to Farrell who is quite good in this flick. This and the Batman made him a force to be reckoned with in 2022.

The Banshees of Inisherin is a delightful trip to a less notable emerald isle and features a story straight out of a theater production put to film (it seems). A black tragicomedy by definition, I found the film quite enjoyable. Colin Farrel and Brendan Gleeson, frequent McDonough collaborators, bring believable performances to their characters, though standout among the cadre is Kerry Condon, whom I want to see more of in the future. The narrative is quite simple, concise, smartly written, and delightfully macabre. Cinematography delights in showing us the landscapes of Inishmoor and Achill Island near Irelands coast thanks to the eyes of DP Ben Davis. Though not my personal favorite of McDonough's films (In Bruge will always take that cake), Banshees is an enjoyable film from beginning to end. Expand

I found the pacing of the second half a little slow, and the darkness was relatively unleavened by humor. I thought it might not stick the landing, but ultimately the ending was well-judged.

I dare any Irish person to watch The Banshees of Inisherin and not recognise themselves or someone they know in this story. Director and writer Martin McDonagh has created another masterpiece.

Set on the Island of Inisherin, lifelong friends Pádraic (Colm Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson) find themselves in the centre of a dilemma when Colm abruptly ends the friendship, much to the shock of the entire Island. Pádraic refuses to accept that Colm could suddenly just decide not to be friends anymore and is determined to put an end to this childish feud. With the help of his sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon) and friend Dominic (Barry Keoghan) they try and repair the relationship. Yet the more Pádraic tries with Colm the worse it gets until Colm is pushed to give a rather dramatic ultimatum with shocking consequences. That’s more than enough on the plot, if you haven’t seen the trailer then keep it that way and just get to a cinema to see it for yourself.

For all the Martin McDonagh fans you need to know that The Banshees of Inisherin is definitely more on the bleak side. Although classed as a black comedy, it’s far more dark and melancholic than comedy. Don’t expect the same amount of laughs compared to some of his other movies such as In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. As to be expected the story is balancing between humour and serious topics, in this case depression, despair and mental illness. You’ll be laughing one minute and disturbed the next. It’s not afraid to pull at the heart strings and will provoke a strong reaction from the audience. It’s definitely a unique story that will stay with you long after the credits has ended.

The cast is small but makes an impact, each playing their part brilliantly. Colin Farrell particularly stands out and reminds us just how good of an actor he really is. Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan are also giving hugely memorable performances so it’s no surprise the entire film has received so much awards buzz already. It’s honestly a relief to watch an Irish film that actually got Irish actors and not a bunch of actors sounding like leprechauns. It’s authentic for the time, especially the dialogue and doesn’t play too much into the stereotypes.

McDonagh is the perfect choice for writing stories that tackle dark issues and inserting comedy among quite depressing topics. The Banshees of Inisherin is a brilliant film, hilarious and bleak. It’s one of a kind and definitely one of the best this year. Highly recommended for everyone.

The duo of Collin Ferrell and Brendan Gleeson each provide standout performances, as well as the rest of the small cast of this film, while the plot is tightly told with none of the unnecessary pretension one usually finds out of an artsier film. McDonagh blends witty black comedy with a simple yet powerful story of the abrupt ending of a lifelong friendship that will leave you laughing at one moment and saddened in the next. Its themes regarding loneliness (specifically repressed loneliness amongst men), the nature of inter-social relationships, and greater meanings in life are truly phenomenal and expressed in a simple, melancholic way that will leave one thinking about where they are and who is in their life. The only flaw I can truly mention regarding this film is the fact the film is quite bleak, which makes it not much of a rewatch. However, for a one time viewing, The Banshees of Inisherin is 100% worth a watch and will certainly make you think, laugh, and cry. Expand

“Maybe he just don’t like you no more.”

The chemistry, even when the characters are not supposed to be on good terms is the most important magic explored in The Banshees of Inisherin.

Martin McDonagh is the boss and creator, that's not in dispute, but it's Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson who bring his world to life, which is both a metaphor and a sad tale of loneliness and vulnerability. One about a man who wants to be alone and another who can't tolerate being alone.

And it's not an otherworldly and complicated story by any stretch of the imagination, but even for our times and in the era in which the events of this film take place it's clear that men don't talk about their feelings.

McDonagh certainly doesn't choose a simplistic path and tackles a violence that at first may seem like a joke because you wouldn't think Gleeson's character would do it, but when it happens is when the story makes it clear to you that this tragicomedy is intended to be genuinely devastating, and it really is.

You're not supposed to leave here with a smile on your face, but I assure you, you won't leave here without something to think about either.

Full stop. In fact, with Martin McDonagh being one of the few filmmakers whose filmographies I've seen in its entirety, I'd say this is easily his best film since "In Bruges," which says a whole lot. "The Banshees Of Inisherin" is simple, yet layered. Beautiful, yet ugly. Hilarious, yet horrific. If there's any work in this filmmaker's oeuvre that I think is the perfect, most simple distillation of his voice/tonal DNA, it has to be this. Beyond that, you have the acting, which is stupendous, the cinematography, which is magical and the overall experience, which is lasting and satisfying. Terrific work here from everyone involved. 'The Banshees of Inisherin' is tragicomedy at its finest. Martin McDonagh is back with an intimate yet powerful tale about friendship, solitude and the irrationality that led to a civil war and a conflict still felt today.

As a metaphor for the long Irish conflict, the film manages to show the absurdity of both sides. Pádraic and Colm represent the arbitrariness that led to it and the violent results. This is a Martin McDonagh film, so expect characters presented with a darkly comedic touch that makes them as funny as bleak. The star of the show, of course, is Colin Farrell. Just look at the man's eyebrows; they show you his mood and emotions every damn time. This very well could be his best performance yet. But that's not it, because Barry Keoghan, Kerry Condon, and Brendan Gleeson are astounding in their roles, and even the smaller ones are great, giving you laughs, somber moments, and great lines equally.

'Banshees...' is funny and sad; McDonagh's brilliant screenplay gives insight into the sentiment of a nation struggling and how that affected its society. I hope this wins at least one or two Oscars next month.

The characters are all extremely honest with each other at the surface level, which is refreshing, and yet there is a pervasive melancholy to the whole affair. Why the bitterness, why the sadness in this idyllic seaside village? I think everyone will find something in the film they can relate to in both a positive or negative way. It's a real work of art. The lighting, which seems mostly natural, is exquisite. Many scenes have a painterly quality to them. The claustrophobia in someone's small home, contrasted against the sweeping endless vistas of the coast create the impression of a world waiting to be explored...just out of reach. An attempt has been made with this story to lift up an unusual rock and see what's underneath. It's brave, assured storytelling by a filmmaker in command of the craft and the actors are up to the task. The lead performances are masterful. It's an exceptional film though highly unusual, so I can imagine it won't be everyone's cup of tea. But I say see it for the amazing offbeat humor, fine performances, beautiful scenery, and you may walk away as I did with some rather profound questions about human nature. Score: 9.25 Expand

Two longtime friends (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) find themselves at odds with each other when one of them abruptly ends their friendship and begins ignoring and avoiding them at all costs. Written and directed by Martin McDonough (Two longtime friends (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) find themselves at odds with each other when one of them abruptly ends their friendship and begins ignoring and avoiding them at all costs. Written and directed by Martin McDonough ( who famously first collaborated with Farrell and Gleeson in the 2008 dark comedy/crime film 'In Bruges') reunites here with the two stars to bring us this equally absurdist and darkly humorous tale set in early 1920s Ireland. The film is a dark, bold, and often somber yet sometimes funny look at changing times and the lengths some will go to fight for a friendship, as well as the lengths some will go to shun others. McDonough, who is known for his dark yet witty humor and dialogue in his stage plays, as well as in previous films such as the aforementioned 'In Bruges', 'Seven Psychopaths' and 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' brings that signature style of his here as well with darkly fascinating results. As for the cast, Farrell and Gleeson are once again in top form alongside each other, and even Kerry Condon, who plays the sister to Farrell's character gives an often riotous, scene-stealing supporting turn. Whenever the film wasn't making me laugh, it would often hit me in the feels unexpectedly and throw me for a loop whenever I least expected it. Overall, this brilliantly acted film that's equal parts dark/dreary and oddly humorous is a true standout for me and one of the better films of this year. Expand

The track record is not great - from Benny and Joon to Napoleon Dynamite, movies that rely on charm and warmth instead of plot and impactful dialogue is an approach I simply dislike. Banshees has no such warmth, as it's much closer to a lamentation on stoicism. Like In Bruges and Three Billboards, there's an air of hard cynicism permeating throughout the film. It's much less fleshed out than those films, and the dialogue is rather minimalist. It's not about that though, as it really is more a philosophical exploration on an array of oft uncomfortable subjects people tend to avoid. Isolation, friendship, death, time, interpersonal illusions, facile gossip, abuse, stoicism - it really goes on... Which is remarkable given how seemingly little there is on the surface, at times.

Which can make the film a little slow. But the performances are all great (honestly, Colin Farrell has turned from kind of a joke to a legitimately decent actor), it's compelling, and the cinematography is also really good. Lastly, this film has an underspoken and underappreciated quality - the linger effect. Chances are you'll think about this film long after it's over. It's unique and thought provoking, and in this saturated and compromised artistic time we live in, it's refreshing.

GleasonLike In Bruges, in The Banshees of Inisherin Martin McDonagh delivers a sometimes somber, sometimes hilarious and consistently engaging cerebral exercise in the meaning of friendship and the metaphor it can be for the world around it. Gleason and Farrell are once again at the top of their game, and their on screen chemistry, or in this case lack thereof, absolutely carry the film. A nest of excellent supporting actors then flesh out the story and all seem to fit perfectly balance each other’s performances. McDonagh is a masterful storyteller who can sometimes feather along the abstract but always provides just enough breadcrumbs that the viewer will still have the satisfaction of putting all the pieces together resulting in a truly exhilarating story. In a world of superficial comic book adaptations and corporate staunched creativity, The Banshees of Inisherin is a welcome reminder of what great filmmaking can be. Expand

His performance here is absolutely amazing and heart wrenching at points as well. He does an amazing job at embodying this character and all his little quirks. Brendan Gleeson did an amazing job as well. He did a great job at being the foil to Colin Farrell’s character with his more serious attitude. Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan did a great job as well with Barry Keoghan delivering probably the best performance of his career by a country mile. One scene from him in particular is heartbreaking. I keep mentioning how this film is heartbreaking and heart wrenching but this film is absolutely hilarious as well. Almost every joke here is very well written and incorporated into each scene and they are just funny in a dark way. This definitely falls under the black comedy genre. McDonagh does an amazing job at directing and incorporating the mix of dark comedy and drama tones together in a way that doesn’t feel jarring. The film starts out being funny but the end you’re definitely feeling emotional and sad as well. The story is really interesting. It’s fascinating watching Colin Farrell try to get back under the good graces of Gleeson’s character and all the incidents that follow that. I think I just watched one of the most sad and beautiful movies there are. Colin Farrell really put an amazing performance. Music and landscapes of island really create an amazing atmosphere.

THE GOOD: Flawless on mainly every single aspect. I really enjoyed the main trio of protagonists. I love the premise and the characters so much.

THE BAD: It is a simple as it gets, which ain't necessarily a bad thing, but maybe left me

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoiler below the star icon. Genuinely went beyond my expectations with a great atmosphere that provoked genuine reaction from the audience and myself. The jokes are fantastic and the acting is praiseworthy in the sense it didn't patronise the Irish or island life very much tho some liberties were taken. As it progressed it really plucked at emotions and became something I didn't expect and honestly I'm surprised and delighted at the quality of this movie.

Personally, I believe it becomes far more sinister if you view the protagonist as the villain rather than the downtrodden hero.
Consider this, an elderly man doesn't want to be friends anymore but the younger man begins to harrass him and force him to stay friends, with things escalating throughout the film.
Excellent movie.

As for the film itself, it has flawless photography and acting credits. The screenplay gives the two performers a lot to do with a few lines, and they answer the call with top-notch performances.

I’ve thought of this movie often in the weeks since viewing it. There’s a powerful lesson in the story, backed up by good acting—serious and funny. A bit slow at the start, but lovely once the narrative gets humming.

Un film che rappresenta la metafora di un qualsiasi conflitto umano (in questo caso la guerra civile del 1923 in Irlanda) visto però da due personaggi che "fisicamente" sono ben lontani dalla guerra ma mentalmente ne restano coinvolti.
