Skillfully mixing elements of horror while never alienating its core PG demographic, The 'Burbs also benefits from a wonderfully playful score by the late great Jerry Goldsmith. While the film bottles it slightly at the end with the obvious, neatly-tied-together resolution which would have benefited from maintaining an ambiguity, the enormous sense of fun established by Dante and his cast in the run-up more than makes up for any shortcomings.

A more inspired director might have salvaged something else, but Dante's point-of-view camera and consciously quirky angles just don't cut it. His horror-genre shots are stylized but not stylish, a by-the-numbers parody without any redeeming individuality. [17 Feb 1989]

Dante's movie is so helter-skelter, that he can't generate the uncomfortable mood the moment requires. It's the balloon principle. The 'Burbs is so full of hot air it simply blows up in its own face. [17 Feb 1989, p.6]

This is my second favourite Joe Dante's movie after "The Howling". I really enjoyed this thrilling suburban crime movie that mix at least four different genres resulting entertaining and balanced. Only good directors can shot a movie like this.

Honestly, a good movie. The primary trio of lads are hilarious and endearing. Acting is excellent. It is a corny film, but it is entertaining. Other than the second act being a little dry, I really liked it.

Its quirky attitude and Joe Dante's direction are all welcome in making a sometimes intriguing, exaggerated world, but "The Burbs" is held back by a highly predictable plot and use of clichés.

Only seen this film once, Tom Hanks gives a good performance in The Burbs and so do a few others. The problem for me is this films storyline could of been better and it could of been funnier and more entertaining. It's a weak film with a weak formula that doesn't really work aswell as it could have.
