Visually it was also stunning and I love the theme tune. However all this said Martin Freeman was not a good choice as a lead but he doesn't manage to spoil the movie. Expand

One day when I was sick, I watched it and was glad that I did. I have never read the book, but judging the movie by itself, it was great. From the humorous opening song to the wacky on-board computer, this movie kept me chuckling without trying to use stupid humor like many of the present day films resort to. I think you either get this movie, or you don't. I would highly recommend it, but if you don't get it the first time, "don't panic." Expand

I've read the book and i can tell you that they changed a few things but kept it a really hilarious comedy with a nice story line.

This movie was hilarious. Some(most) of the jokes were so stupid it was funny. which I like. I haven't read this book so I don't know if this is better or worse than the books.

Funny. Insightful on many levels. It fails to capture all of Adams' brilliance, but, in the end, what ever could?

It's a fine dedication, To those who worry about the source material, Douglas Adams, author of both the radio drama and novels, wrote the screenplay. He died as it was being produced, which is why the film is dedicated to his memory. It's a fine dedication, too. Take the heart of an absurd, oddball comedy and put it in science fiction, and you get this movie, where it isn't just the characters who behave bizarrely, but every aspect of the world, and soon, the galaxy. If you've never experienced a prior version of Hitchhiker's (it's been a radio play, book, videogame and television series before this), expect some of the most creative and irreverent humor you've ever witnessed. This movie will switch on a heartbeat from mocking ringtones to mocking the meaning of life. If nothing else, this flick is a good test of whether you can just relax. Expand

I thought this movie was cool, even though most of my friends hated it. it was very funny (at times - but then no film can be funny all the time).

Manuel M said... "Couldn't understand what they were saying so I stopped watching it." Ah, now that's a vote you can trust. A new 'Ebert' to lead the way, aren't you? English is though, isn't it. English is though, isn't it. Now, I loved this movie, I personally think it's going to go down as the most underrated movie of the year. Sam Rockwell was great and I really enjoyed the quirky sense of humor (aka British comedy). I wasn't let down because I knew the only way this movie would live up to the books was if they made three or more films (Hollywood wouldn't take that much of a risk on HGttG) - kudos to the crew for making such a great, fun, and self-contained film that captured the zest and inventive nature of the original novel. I'm sure Adams would like it. True cinematic fun! Expand

The director is a great choice, because there's a hell of a sense of humour and that's perfect for the source. Altough there is obvious liking to movies like the fifth element, the movie does not steer away from the philosophy of the book that the universe is practically the same as earth only bigger. It's a very happy adaptation and don't go expecting huge fights and expensive set-pieces....this is where it veers abit because it can get messy with the fast editing. The cast is great especially alan rickman's depressed robot Marvin. It good fun to watch but its so faithful that some jokes seem repeated. Expand

The humor (is you have a sense of such) is riotous, The scene in which they must not think or get bonked by a shovel is so bizarre and weird it transgresses funny and takes you to another dimension of humor. If you didn't like this movie, I suggest you go rent Napoleon Dynamite and have a good time watching the worst movie in history. Expand

You could tell it's a tad watered-down, but it's a lot better than it should have been considering the years in developmental hell and the death of the primary creator.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I recall seeing parts of this film perhaps over a decade ago at this point, where I recall really loving the dry-humor and wit in the film. Upon re-watch that still holds true, but for some reason the film didn't particularly click with me. I found it to be just fine, but what originally had me laughing and in amazement felt less spectacular on re-watch. I can't explain why, but that's how I feel.

A very entertaining movie that is consistently hilarious and sometimes a beautiful spectacle. Really enjoyed all the cast, and is just a great film in which you never knew what was coming next.

I also think it's pretty underrated, which kinda infuriates me, but oh well. I think the film is pretty funny(despite what Roger Ebert said about it), I like the actors, the love for practical effects and I think they had a great movie going on here. I do wish it would get a sequel, but the director was really hurt by the film's poor reception, even though the film spawned a small fanbase that praise this movie for its odd nature.

If you have a chance, give "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" a watch, you'll have a great time.

It's not the same story, is a little bit changed with some important plot details that are different from the book, but that, instead of bothering me actually makes me like this movie even more, because there are things that are going to amaze you anyway even if you read the book, which I did. The acting was somewhat nice, not absolutely perfect, but there are some good thing. Zooey Deschannel did an excellent job, and also did Martin Freeman, the rest of them weren't that good. The music was pretty amazing. I think that this has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard at the begining of a movie.
Sadly, there isn't too much emotion trough it, and it has a lot of clichés. Nothing to really worry about though, but it really lows down its score. If you read the book and liked, or if you want to see a nice science fiction movie, watch it, without doubt.

It is quite good course if to consider that the world around of a galaxy in the movie is worked out worst of all. The name completely doesn't reflect validity of the movie! It is the real clickbait! Where at least several memorable locations and other races? Everything that show it Earth and some dumps. Why other beings who one in one are similar to people live not on Earth? But as comedy movie excellent, good acting and absurdity of the events. At all the movie problem that in it there is no sense isn't present a message. Simply good cinema for a family in a circle of children. Expand
