This movie is soo amazing! I **** love it.

Look, I don't consider myself to be a huge Natalie Portman fan, but geez, when this girl touches my heart, she touches my heart. This movie is just... it's one of those films. This movie is just... it's one of those films. It's beautifully shot, sometimes you'll forget you aren't in Paris aside the backdrop of Leon's grim reality. The script is fantastic, see: every interaction between Reno and Portman. It's a heartwarming story. A story of healing, of daughters, fathers, innocence lost, but a hope that never fades out. It's a story of brutal honesty, yet a quiet optimism always shines through. It captivated me on so many levels... I don't know. I was deeply affected. It's a worthwhile investment, and it's definitely "buy it" quality. A film I'll never forget and one that I can't wait to revisit once my batteries recharge. It's no walk in the park, but damn is it still a beautiful ride.… Expand

Absolutely fantastic, the least to say it is by far the best comedy/action/thriller/drama i have ever seen, Oldman is AMAZING, and the performance by Natalie Portman confirms that she is one of the most talented young actress of our time. Just finished watching this movie a few minutes ago. An unbelievable rollercoaster ride that had me hooked from the very start. The only bad things I can think of are the musical choices and Jean Reno's heavy French accent throughout. GaryJust finished watching this movie a few minutes ago. It may seem completely unreasonable at some parts but its Luc Besson's trademark. Its like a comic, it isn't made to resemble real life. Thus the plot holes. Hats off to Luc Besson for taking such a brave concept and absolutely nailing it. The Professional is one of the best films of the 90's, and trumps all but the best of today's thrillers. The Professional is one of the best films of the 90's, and trumps all but the best of today's thrillers. There's a really perfect balance between action sequences and slower-paced, dialogue driven scenes. The interaction between the confident Portman and soft-spoken Reno is quite beautiful, and kept me hooked even as the film slowed in pace towards the mid-way point. However, it's Gary Oldman who steals the show as the psychotic DEA agent, which is no small feat given Reno and Portman's solid performances. I don't think there can be any denying his performance was a inspiration for Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker - sometimes humorous, usually clever, and always tinged with a little insanity.
The Professional truly is a gem - I just hope people can look past the mediocre critic reviews and form their own opinion.… Expand

Seldom in the history of film will you find two actors with such chemistry, and nowhere in film will you find two actors who work together so well with such a gap between their ages. They are bizarre, awkward, funny, violent - and ultimately as charming as any romance, without playing a cheap Lolita angle. The innocence this movie portrays, buried in its own hard, confusing world, will crack even the toughest shells. All the guns, hitmen, drugs and cops are gravy on the side.… Expand

The story is inspiring and its awkwardness is fantastic, there are no holes there: it's entertaining from beginning to end. The actors are wonderful, Jean Reno did his part very well and 12-year old Natalie PortmanThis movie just. has. it.

The actors are wonderful, Jean Reno did his part very well and 12-year old Natalie Portman is amazing. Gary Oldman was fabulous. I could scream EVEEERYYYYOOONNNE!!!!!!! all day! (but never the way HE does). Even secondary characters were very well played. The end was royal: a mix of action and emotion is masterly delivered with a nice song to close the epilogue.
In conclusion, this movie is definitively a must-see. It's the only great movie that wasn't even nominated for Oscars.… Expand

A classic of the 90s, I recently revisited this film, and it still has the same impact. The chemistry between Mathilde and Leon is palpable (if a little creepy at times, from her point of view). I loved this movie before I even watched it. Leon is French-produced, meaning you wont see any of Hollywood's cliches. Gary Oldman is absolutely phenomenal in portraying a crazed DEA agent and truly is a superstar here in this cast, not to say that Jean Reno or Natalie Portman were not good, because they were great as well. Not as good as Oldman, but they were no slouches either. For this one, the few actiony sequences were well done and very exciting and the thriller element was certainly there as the thrills, at times, really left you on the edge of your seat. The film is also very heartwarming as both Leon and Mathilda are in tough spots and really fill the holes in one another's hearts. At times, it can be a little creepy, but for the most part, their father-daughter esque relationship is charming, even if a bit odd to many. Overall, Leon: The Professional is a good film that has great performances, though that does not necessarily overshadow the other good qualities it brings to the table.… Expand

We are forced to identify with 'Leon' (Jean Reno) who we learn is a hit man that drinks milk, not whiskey, suggesting he is not numbed to his profession, but perhaps pure in his approach, further clarified by his number one rule, "No women, no kids."

12yr old 'Matilda' (Natalie Portman) an old soul that says things like, "I'm already grown up, I'm just getting old." and a fatal romantic, "I want love, or death, that's it." Matilda's surroundings and upbringing make us think she could one day be an artist, a mother of three, or a prostitute, so many outs if she can only stay alive.

DEA agent Norman Stansfield (Gary Oldman) charming, gallant, intense, stepping out of the pages of GQ Magazine clearly in love with himself and his work and when he pops a happy pill (his fix) one hears a disturbing audible crack and when the curtains are pulled it's a manic blend of beethoven and 12 gauge blasts, he is everything a detective should be turned on its head into corruption and greed but still we find him taking the time to lecture some truants, "Kids, should be in school."

These three characters collide in a story of revenge and justice that a badge or a gavel cannot deliver; it's a love story, The Professional is tender and brutal and platonic and ruthless and moral and in the end, it delivers.

Would have preferred a more European open ending, but American audiences demand closure and absoluteness, robbing themselves of a story or character living on and haunting their imagination.… Expand

Instead of wanting to be a doctor, fashion model, teacher, lawyer, or nuclear physicist, Mathilda has decided to follow in the footsteps of her best friend, surrogate father, and protector, Leon (Jean Reno). The only problem is that Leon is a "cleaner" -- a professional hit man ("Cool" is her one-word response when she learns this tidbit of information).

Mathilda comes from a very dysfunctional family. Her father is a drug dealer, his wife (played by Ellen Greene in a wig and performance that strongly recall images of Little Shop of Horrors' Audrey) despises her, and her half-sister enjoys beating her up. Mathilda's chief pleasure is hanging out in her New York City tenement building's stairwell, smoking cigarettes.

One day, a crooked cop (played with typical over-the-top exuberance by Gary Oldman) decides to have Mathilda's whole family exterminated. When she arrives home to find them slaughtered, she goes to Leon, who lives down the hall, for help. Although he's at first reluctant to open his door to her, once he does, she worms her way into both his life and his heart. And she's not some wide-eyed innocent; her desire to learn about killing is fueled by the need to exact bloody revenge for her little brother's murder (she could care less about the other family members).

In La Femme Nikita, writer/director Luc Besson proved his capability of putting as much octane and adrenaline into a thriller as any American director while keeping his formula uniquely non-Hollywood. Much the same is true of The Professional, which has sequences to rival those of Speed for white-knuckle excitement - not to mention a plot that's equally as preposterous.

The real strength of The Professional, however, is the central relationship between Mathilda and Leon. Although not well-founded in reality, these two characters mesh nicely. Despite an occasional low-key hint of sexual attraction, this is basically a father/daughter or mentor/apprentice relationship. There's nothing unique about a young girl melting the heart of a hardened loner except the manner in which Besson approaches the theme.

Jean Reno, essentially reprising his "cleaner" role from Nikita (where he was called Victor), plays his character with a perpetual deadpan (except when he lampoons John Wayne). He does more with mannerisms and body language than with facial expressions, and the closer he is drawn to Mathilda, the more uncomfortable he appears.

The less traditional role belongs to an impressive Natalie Portman, yet another member of the highly-talented, recent group of youthful actors. Portman portrays a victim of society's ills, the perfect example of innocence corrupted. There are likely some viewers who will be disturbed by Mathilda's predilection for profanity.

Because of the non-American flavor brought to this film by Besson, The Professional is anything but typical fare. It is stylish, darkly humorous, and almost artsy in its approach to the genre. Nevertheless, it delivers what viewers want from any thriller: lots of action. With some surprisingly strong character interaction, there's a lot to like about this movie, at least for those willing to look beyond all the bloodshed.

At one point, Leon comments to an attentive Mathilda that "the closer you get to being a pro, the closer you can get to the client." Through the intimacy of the link forged by Besson with his audience, there's no doubt that he's as much the consummate professional as his implacable title character.… Expand

What I Personally Liked About "The Professional":
Much of the greatness found in this film rests squarely on the shoulders of its actors. Residing on the top rung of that ladder of greatness is none other than Gary Oldman. This guy has turned in so many brilliant performances over the years that it's hard to believe he's only been nominated for an Academy Award ONCE! Between the performance he gives in this film and the performance he gave in "Immortal Beloved" (also released in 1994), he should have easily been nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars that year. Newcomer Natalie Portman also turned in a stellar performance as well. You can (almost) always tell whether or not a child actor has what it takes to make it in the business and there wasn't even the slightest shadow of a doubt that Natalie was going to have a solid career. She displays an ability that would be rare coming from a thirty-year veteran, which makes it all the more startling due to the fact that this was Natalie's feature debut. Technically the star of the film, Jean Reno, takes third tier in the acting department. His quiet killing grace and awkward social interactions are spot-on and fill his character with an undeniable charm not usually found in silver screen assassins. There are a few moments of levity peppered throughout Luc Besson's screenplay which help to keep some of the weight of this dark subject material from crushing its viewers. The cinematography from Thierry Arbogast is also a very nice touch. He keeps the visuals feeling wide and free, even in the most confining of spaces (such as hallways, stairwells, small apartment rooms, etc.) which is where much of the film takes place.

What I Personally Disliked About "The Professional":
There are a few slightly irritating drawbacks in the movie (mostly centered around the odd editing choices and certain selections from Eric Serra's score mid way through the presentation), however they are not annoying enough to damage the overall effect of the film.

My Overall Impression of "The Professional":
Besson has been hit or miss, in my eyes, since the start of his directorial career. "The Professional" certainly qualifies as one of the former. All of the right bullets hit all of the right targets, making this one of the brighter dramatic showcases of its year (and possibly of its decade).… Expand

One of emblematic movies of french director. Jean Reno and Natalie Portman in their characters makes an excellent chemistry in a story of unusual love and vengeance. Even Gary Oldman stands out in his role of villian. For watch a friday evening.

A great movie. This one was a blind buy for me on Blu-Ray but I am glad that I picked this one up because I really enjoyed it. I think this is one of Natalie Portman's first movies and she is amazing in this movie. She is not one of myA great movie. I have been dying to buy Leon for years now and when i saw it on the top shelf at my local music store (why it was there i don't know) i bought it straight away, went home and watched it and it was awesome. The directing was as smooth as a circle, the writing inventive, the action was limited but awesome when it was there, the acting holds up mostly and then there is the greatest villain of them all, Gary Oldman. Starting with the acting, Jean Reno aced his performance and really did portray the 'cleaner' profession, i really do wish all films based around hit-men could be like this, i really do. The writing, it sustained a brisk pace throughout the movie and plotted twists and turns in different places creating this fantastic film. But there is one character who i find unusually disturbing and this was Matilda played by Natalie Portman, Matilda was weird, disturbing and a little bit looney, but on the other hand she is still a innocent kid who loves to copycat and play games, yet she acts like an adult to lure Leon into her trap where who knows what would have happened. Matilda disturbed me yet showed me the innocence of childhood and that is exactly what a charterer like her should do, divide your opinion and question their every move. Then there is Gary Oldman, and he honestly was more disturbing, you could see the insanity in his eyes, yet he could be disturbingly calm or the complete opposite and we never actually get to know his character which i love to see, every film needs a character like this, i think it just keeps the audience on the edge of their seat just connecting the dots. To conclude i feel as if Leon has made it into my top 10 favourite films of all time so i award it with a 10/10.… Expand

This is amazing movie with perfect french directing, really good editing and transitions, shots in general are good and pacing is smooth enough.

The "hate" mostly comes from culture shock of 12 year old posing as 18 year old and really trying to force on the man. You can clearly see that Jean Reno was not acting at the moment when he saw Natalie Portman's character Mathilda dressing up as women. It was shot with first take. And not sure if the role of Leon was supposed to be uncomfortable with this girl, the actor's genuine feeling seem to be exactly that throughout the movie. Gary Oldman is great, too lets no forget :)… Expand

Reno y Portman forman una icónica pareja protagonista cargada de simbología y frases y diálogos que se te quedarán grabados en tu memoria. Sin duda, a "El Profesional" hay que reconocerle el mérito de tocar temas de una manera tan cercana y natural que nadie se atreve a tocar y además, dar lecciones de como tratarlos mediante sus personajes.

Luc Besson's film Leon:The Professional is a superb one. Visually, it is very stylish, with striking location work, atmospheric lighting and really authentic and bold cinematography. The soundtrack also does very well in enhancing the mood of each scene, and Besson's direction is faultless.

There is also a gripping story with well crafted characters particularly Mathilda and Jean Reno's character Leon, a cracking script and crisp pacing and while there are some over-the-top and intense moments particularly with Stansfield and the beginning, particularly as the chemistry between Mathilda and Leon expands there are some poignant ones too.

The acting is excellent. Jean Reno is charismatic and commanding in the title role while Gary Oldman is wildly bombastic as Stansfield. But I was especially impressed by Natalie Portman, who delivers one of the best and most captivating feature debuts ever. In conclusion, a fantastic film. 10/10 Bethany Cox… Expand

Ao todo, é uma boa experiencia. O filme sabe muito bem como te prender, te deixando bem ansioso para o final que sabemos que acontecerá. Há alguns momentos cômicos que funcionam bem - principalmente entre a dupla, as cenas de ação não tem áAo todo, é uma boa experiencia. Os diálogos, e este é o ponto que mais me deixou confuso quanto ao filme, não fazem muito sentido. A relação de Leon e Mathilda é no minimo controversa e eu não faço a minima ideia do que o diretor/roteirista que passar com isso. Soa estranho, forçado e dá até um certo tipo de nojo pra quem prestou mais atenção. Fora alguns furos lógicos no roteiro, como "O melhor hitman do mundo não sabe ler" - existem formas mais eficientes de criar uma conexão fácil entre os dois, está é apenas preguiçosa. Quanto aos personagens, o único que realmente chamou minha atenção foi o antagonista, que traz um ar de incerteza incomoda toda vez que aparece em cena, tudo isso possível graças a interpretação do Gary Oldman, que está sensacional!… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a very good movie with some incredible acting. It was amazing to see such a young Natalie Portman put on such a brilliant performance! Along with the acting of Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, and plenty of others, this film makes for a unique drama boasting loads of talent. The rather strange relationship between Leon and Matilda was a bit obscure in my opinion, and could have been established further simply because when Leon was letting Matilda down the inside of the wall, essentially saying goodbye forever to one another, I wasn't sad or sorry for their departure. IMDb's 8.5 / 10 is a bit high for what, in my honest opinion, this movie truly deserves. Personally, I would give it a wholesome 7.5 / 10. Nevertheless, this movie is well worth watching, make sure not to miss this one.… Expand
