It’s a very powerfully performed, intimate piece, perhaps inspired at some level by the classic adventure The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Mullan is very good at suggesting the careworn wisdom of someone who has to be a father figure, or even grandfather figure to men who don’t have his skill in self-control and self-denial. The Vanishing is surprisingly good, it tells a sad twisted story with a great deal of mastery, the plot is straightforward but it's actualized with breathtaking performances by everyone in the film, it has this deep eerie and dark feeling to it that adds this gripping factor as we watchThe Vanishing is surprisingly good, it tells a sad twisted story with a great deal of mastery, the plot is straightforward but it's actualized with breathtaking performances by everyone in the film, it has this deep eerie and dark feeling to it that adds this gripping factor as we watch dramatic events unfold in front of us, granted, that it has some structural problems with its narrative but the end product is so captivating you just can't take your eyes off it.
The slow burn storytelling adds a great deal of suspense as we ourself examine and analyze what could happen, what I also loved is that through the film itself is dealing with a moral problem as its characters struggle to cope with their new situations, it is really beautiful to watch.
The Vanishing does its story justice as we're offered a chilling narrative that doesn't disappoint at all, an all-around great effort.… Expand

Very gripping and agonizingly realistic, especially in showing the realities of what instant fortune can cost you. Suspenseful as all hell, keeps you on the edge the whole time. It features some amazing performances by very talented actors. The only thing that's disappointing is that it tends to just increase the intensity of their misery with no relief. There's a fine line between harrowing and depressing, and this story does fall a bit much on the latter side.… Expand

A pleasant surprise and I say it sincerely.

There's nothing extraordinary but this is a quite solid and quite entertaining suspense film and maybe yes, my expectations were low at first but in all honesty, this is one of those times when I get my mouth shut.

The claim of the film is that the subject is based on a real event. As the time progresses, the tension should increase, but the movie gets more boring. It's a common theme in these lighthouse-themed movies that people lose their balance and become demonized. (see: The Lighthouse) was one of the most successful films on this subject. This movie doesn't go beyond mediocre.

The intensity of the plot climaxes towards the middle of the movie but then decides to slowly deflate into a very unsatisfying and mediocre end.

The main issue is that the entire plot is based on the characters non-sensical and poorly thought out decision making. Every consequence that spurred from their choices was so avoidable it leaves the viewer with a bit of annoying frustration.

It's really average. Good cast, good acting but the extremely mediocre plot and ending just ruins the entire movie.… Expand
