Dwayne Johnson in 'Black Adam'
Warner Bros. PicturesThe titular antihero in Black Adam has abilities that his anger over his son's death cultivated, and now there is a whole team dedicated to locking him up (if they can find a place that can hold him, of course) so that things don't get out of hand and innocent people hurt. That's bound to make him (played by Dwayne Johnson) even more angry (you might remember him saying he is not a peaceful person and he kneels "before no one" in the trailer), but it is making critics excited for Johnson to be back on the big screen.
"Dwayne Johnson finds a great balance in being menacing & badass, but also empathetic," wrote critic Erik Davis on Twitter, while critic Courtney Howard simply said, "@TheRock is terrific in #BlackAdam."
Even Grace Randolph, who was not impressed with the movie overall, couldn't help but call out Johnson's commitment: "The Rock puts 200% into... the wrong movie," she Tweeted. "Should've made #BlackAdam vs #Superman."
DC’s #BlackAdam ROCKS! Tons of action, characters you’re instantly invested in & terrific pacing. Dwayne Johnson finds a great balance in being menacing & badass, but also empathetic. Especially loved Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman & Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate. More JSA movies please! pic.twitter.com/YSCco9zYA3

.@TheRock is terrific in #BlackAdam, which includes a hearty amount of real world touchstones (most affecting is it reinforces the need for heroes in bleak times). Director Juame Collet-Serra lays out building blocks for a larger, grand universe. Action is lively & BIG in scale. pic.twitter.com/pDBkSHRDrI

#BlackAdam social media embargo has lifted!

The Rock puts 200% into… the wrong movie
Should’ve made #BlackAdam vs #Superman
This starts very strong, but halfway thru I lost interest
Just 5 seconds of #HenryCavill, but he looks incredible 🔥
More coverage to come!!!! pic.twitter.com/FwDMPNnrzY
The DC Comics-inspired film is in theaters Oct. 21, but the social media embargo for those who saw early screenings has already lifted, with comic book fans and critics alike eagerly sharing what they thought of director Jaume Collet-Serra and screenwriters Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvan's takes on the character.
"#BlackAdam is a worthy new piece of the DC puzzle, but not the savior it promised," reporter Germain Lussier Tweeted, calling the film overall "messy in a watchable way."

A surprising compressed timeline keeps the action exciting & pace propulsive, but also turns its many (many) themes, plots, & characters into fancy window dressing. It's messy in a watchable way. pic.twitter.com/uwZUb2hbiM
Most of the reactions thus far have fallen in line with Lussier's, saying that the film is far from perfect on its own, let alone the best DC project to date, but that it's highly entertaining, "epic," and provides a lot of opportunities for future projects with such characters as Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) and Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan).

BOOM! #BlackAdam @TheRock delivers us one of the most ADRENALINE FUELLED adventures of the year! This 300 style ACTION SPECTACLE feels like a hit for DC. Some side characters & a shaky script prevent this from changing the hierarchy of the DCEU. Pierce Brosnan is a scene stealer! pic.twitter.com/TWFUpBcEKs

#BlackAdam isn’t perfect but the potential is there. The script lacks character depth and while @TheRock looks the part, leaves a lot to be desired. Dr. Fate & Hawkman steal the show as the perfect duo. Ultimately, the big hero scenes are badass yet it fails on the story. pic.twitter.com/D2tt21Dhax

#BlackAdam is DC's most action-packed film to date. It's a non-stop thrill ride that is all about spectacle, and it knows it. Ther3 is barely anytime to breath, or even talk. @TheRock is a perfect Black Adam, plus Pierce Brosnon is a standout. The film will leave fans buzzing! pic.twitter.com/HxCYYNw71w

There is some really excellent world building in this film - some of the best we’ve seen from DC. Comic book films that have momentum, emotion and a strong layered mythology are always the most entertaining to me. #BlackAdam also left me wanting more, which is what you want imo pic.twitter.com/wJUXAtuEdI

Pierce Brosnan kills it as Doctor Fate. He steals scenes. Charismatic as ever.

Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman leaves a lot of meat on the bone for future stories to dig deeper into. His action scenes are terrific.#BlackAdam relies on action, lands some humor, and it’s bad-ass. pic.twitter.com/zYEdqIY7zO
Black Adam is everything that I hoped it would be and more. A Snyder-esque antihero spectacle that delivers big action and impressive set pieces. Dwayne Johnson transforms into Black Adam, a role that he was born to play. Centineo & Swindell are so damn fun to watch. #BlackAdam pic.twitter.com/V1tY0liyph
