Travel back in time — specifically 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones — to House of the Dragon in the full trailer for HBO's epic prequel series, which premieres on Aug. 21 and also streams on HBO Max.

This new drama series, which consists of 10 episodes in its first season, is based on George R.R. Martin's 2018 fantasy novel, Fire & Blood and focuses on the story of House Targaryen, led by King Viserys (Paddy Considine), whose rightful heir is a daughter, which causes some in the land to reject the line of succession. The show will tell its story over multiple years, as evidenced by the fact that more than one actor plays the same character, just in different time periods, as the show follows a civil war that ripped apart Westeros.

House of Dragon stars Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D'Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Emily Carey, Harry Collett, Ryan Corr, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Graham McTavish, Ewan Mitchell, Theo Nate, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, Phia Saban, Gavin Spokes, and Savannah Steyn.

Martin serves as co-creator on the series alongside co-creator and co-showrunner Ryan Condal. Miguel Sapochnik serves as co-showrunner and director. Other executive producers are writer Sara Hess, Jocelyn Diaz, Vince Gerardis, and Ron Schmidt. Other directors are Clare Kilner, Geeta V. Patel, and Greg Yaitanes, who is also a co-executive producer.
