A teaser for Vampire Academy, released at San Diego Comic-Con, teases that survival is the only option for young girls with big, supernatural responsibilities. But that is an understatement.

Based on Richelle Mead's novel series of the same name, Vampire Academy, which premieres Sept. 15 on Peacock, centers on a powerful Royal, a vampire who has a legacy and a populace to protect, and a half-vampire Guardian who is trained to protect the Royal. They happen to be best friends, which calls into question whether they should be working together in such capacity, but they have such a deep, almost mystical bond that they will likely need each other more than those around them could know or understand. Because the dangers that lurk are savage Strigoi vampires that threaten to literally tear society apart — and the Royals infighting threatens society on a slightly more figurative, but still very real, level.

The series comes from showrunners Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre, and stars Sisi Stringer, Daniela Nieves, Kieron Moore, André Dae Kim, J. August Richards, Anita-Joy Uwajeh, Mia Mckenna-Bruce, Rhian Blundell, Jonetta Kaiser, and Andrew Liner.

Emily Cummins, Don Murphy, Susan Montford, Deepak Nayar, and Jillian DeFrehn also executive produce alongside Plec and MacIntyre. Plec also directs, as do Bille Woodruff, Luis Prieto, Jesse Warn, Erica Dunton, and Geoff Shotz. The 10-episode drama comes from Universal Television.

Previously, Mead's first novel in her series was turned into a feature film, also titled Vampire Academy. That film has a Metascore of 31. The new series as not yet been made available for review.
