Rick Lyon

Biography: Rick Lyon was born and grew up in Rochester, NY. He studied theatre at Penn State University, and puppetry at the Institute of Professional Puppetry Arts in Connecticut and the Institut Internationale de la Marionnette in France. Right out of college, Rick worked on a puppet show in Las Vegas. While living in Connecticut in 1986, Rick met Jim Henson and began working with him on The Muppets. He played the roles of Ernie, Bert, Cookie Monster, and Oscar on Sesame Street. Since then, he has worked for Columbia Pictures, New Line Cinema, ABC, CBS, PBS, The Disney Channel, Nickelodeon (for which he has done several commericals), Comedy Central, VH1, and Fox. Rick also designs and builds his own puppets. He has his own company - Lyon Puppets.From its very early days, Rick was involved in the Broadway musical Avenue Q. He originated the roles of Nicky, Bad Idea Bear #1, and Trekkie Monster (and a few singing boxes!) and build and designed the puppets used in production. He is close to many of his fellow cast members as he has worked with them in the past - Jennifer Barnhart on Between the Lions, Sesame Street, and Bear in The Big Blue House and his costar Stephanie D'Abruzzo in The Book of Pooh. He also have designed some puppets for Comedy Central's Crank Yankers, Nickelodeon's Stick Stickly, and the live national tour of The Magic Schoolbus.Rick currently lives in the New York area. When he has time, he creates and prefoms shows with his puppet troupe. He also records the music with collaborators John Lynch and Jim Ream in the guise of the band "The Ripmeisters." He is still with Avenue Q, recently returning to the Broadway production on 5/4/2006 after leaving for a few months to open the Las Vegas production. Expand
