Even if you have no interest in picking up any kind of gaming console, do yourself a favor and give Arcane a try. It has more mature storytelling and emotional resonance than many live-action shows do right now. And it deserves to be lauded as the new benchmark for what can be done when it comes to successfully translating worthy videogame universes into a different medium while refusing to dumb down or simplify complex storytelling. Arcane is a world worth getting lost within.
Even if you’re not a gamer, or a fan of League of Legends, Arcane will be more than entertaining enough to hold your interest, with an interesting story backed by amazing animation.
Where in the heck did this show come from? I remember seeing it pop-up on Netflix, and thought "might be cool, but my wife won't be interested in the least, so.... maybe later." Never have, and never will play League of Legends, so I kind of forgot about the show. I pooled some free time over the Christmas 2023 season, and needed something, and this show kept popping up. Hell, I think this is even on IMDB's top 25 (or better) shows of all time. Wow. I actually might be one of those folks that isn't *completely* gaga over the art style, but I still give this show a 10 out of 10. It's that good across the board. Story, characters, pacing, beats, music, acting, etc. Even the very first fight scene, basically between young teenagers, hit harder than any live action fight scenes I have seen on TV recently. Think I will stop there, and just say: it really is that good.
It seems like once in a generation an animation series surpasses all others. Until now, it was Avatar: The Last Airbender, but Arcane should definitely be indoctrinated into the pantheon of all-time greats. I know nothing about the video game. The series is set in a steampunk world and follows two sisters who strive to survive in a dangerous underworld, and two inventors who try to do the right thing in a gleaming city of the overprivileged. I can't wait for season 2!
The characters are (mostly) well designed, the story is good and makes sense, the dialogue between characters is not bad aswell...
This goes at least for the first 3 episodes; after that it gets worse with every episode due to the rushed story, the amount of unnecessary drama, the huge amount of plot armor (there are characters that survive a freaking atom explosion while everyone that's not a protagonist around them dies. cmon...) and the laughably huge amount of convenient "coincidences" that happen just so the story can progress. It's like the writers couldn't figure out how the story should progress in a natural way or just rushed the story to the end while filling the gaps with boring and forced drama. 9/10 for the first 2 episodes. 3/10 for the rest.
Very well drawn, voice over is great, but the whole story feels like "yet another world, that mimics industrial society crisis" + some magic and tech to cheer it up. It's so depressive, slow and filled with clichés, that it becomes boring since the first seconds.
And the artistic style is great, but better fit short music videos. As a full-length cartoon this style feels too heavy to enjoy, like a whole cake filled with cherries, instead of using a few cherries on top.
