These intimate, well-told stories become the ingredients for a new Foo Fighters song recorded at a local studio and performed at the end of each hourlong episode.
Sonic Highways does dig deeper than a lot of other musician-centric documentaries do.

It's certainly entertaining to this music lover and musician. While I watch as a major Foo Fighters fan, the rest of the show so far is very well done and enjoyable to watch. My only minor, minor **** is I don't need the words on the screen at the end when they play the song. I am looking forward to the Seattle episode even though I was in a death metal band trying to get noticed amongst the grunge bands....

I''m not the biggest Foo Fighters fan at all (although I do love Dave Grohl as a drummer), but I think he really has a great vision with this series. My favorite so far is the latest one to air at this date November 6, 2014, the Nashville episode. I like the old true country music, and the song they compose in this one is the strongest so far- definitely not country! This series is probably just a way to market the latest Foo Fighters album, but it seems like it is an actual honest look at the man, the band and the wonderful, diverse musical history of the selected American cities. I'm taking a point off my score due to the fact that San Francisco, an iconic town with a fabulous musical heritage, has been omitted. Shame.

An eclectic and enthralling documentary travelogue that follows the band on a musical journey to explore the rich cultural heritage of eight iconic music meccas.
Whatever happens, this is an interesting series and a worthy endeavor that makes terrific use of archival footage in both of the first two hours.
Grohl’s style as a director is much like his style as a conversationalist: highly earnest, highly caffeinated, and sometimes a tad on-the-nose. However, it’s his interest in the practical details of recording--from consoles and instruments to the masonry work in the studio walls--that most distinguishes him from his less technical fellow rockists.
The series sometimes meanders, but only because Grohl's goals are lofty.
There's a lot to be gained from Sonic Highways, but it probably won't appeal to those outside of hardcore music appreciation circles, or those who are out on Friday nights.
The second episode (Washington DC) was particularly inspired. It was very affecting and immersing for me as both music fan and musician – in ways that are hard to explain. I feel I have a new understanding and appreciation of that era and the musicians it helped define in a way that sort of makes me unsure how I got by without it before.

SEASON 1
The ingredient of Sonic Highways, is the influences that Dave shows to us. It is so highly connected to his mind, and in the end everything makes sense. The first episode, shows a bright side of punk rock music and blues, that affects "Something From Nothing". It's beautiful. It is genius.

Not such a rock fan but dig the Foo. I think this series started very well with the first one I saw in Chicago. Gives a good look into the creative process and a glance at Grohl's hypothesis that the city can/does influence the making of a record/sound. Not sure how the following episodes will go but I liked the song that came from the first episode. Good marketing move by the Foo as well. Not much NOT to like.

On the whole I enjoy the documentary aspects of the episodes - Dave is a really good film maker and intelligent interviewer. On a few the personal story relating to the city takes over and the story behind the city's music scene suffers - this is especially true of the LA episode - without spoiling, the desert part of the story should have been a whole separate episode. My other HUGE issue with the show is that the FF music doesn't seem to be impacted AT ALL by the great music and musicians joining them. I think Dave needs a new band, especially a different drummer - HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO HEAR THE SAME FILLS OVER AND OVER?? If you are going to treat us to jazz and funk in NOLA don't give us the same BS FF has been playing for 15 years! DG is still writing great songs, but the music production is stale. I thought Butch Vig's influence would bring something fresh, but I am not hearing it. DAVE, LET BUTCH DO HIS THING AND YOU SHUT UP AND LEARN.
