James Gunn's first major TV project takes this blunt instrument of an anti-hero and uses him as the base for an at times strange, at times pretty fun action-horror adventure. (The term "superhero"... does not feel particularly applicable, in this case.)
This is now my absolutely favourite TV show ever. Me and my girlfriend both became obsessed with this show. pretty much binging it over a weekend. It just nails every aspect perfectly. It develops the characters, find new ways to tell jokes, visually awesome, gripping story, and makes you want to watch just one more episode. James Gunn is a genius, it's the only explanation. John Cena is also an absolute legend in this. Man I really hope season 2 is coming soon.
The first season of Peacemaker was one of the funniest most solid seasons of a show I've ever watched. The opening is probably one the best openings I've ever seen it is just so ridiculously stupid and funny. No surprise at all James Gunn's writing was perfection, just hilarious while still incorporating some more serious and deeper moments like exploring the emotional trauma Peacemaker endured at the hands of his father. The performances from John Cena, Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Robert Patrick, Steve Agee, Chukwudi Iwuji, Annie Chang, and Nhut Le were phenomenal. The visual effects especially the "Butterflies" and the "Cow" were outstanding. The fight choreography and fight scenes were awesome especially the season finale fight. The music was great. This first season was an A+ for me.
Self-conscious but never smug, sociopathic and yet also sweet, and timely if never preachy, it’s the very sort of no-holds-barred, tongue-in-cheek endeavor that’s become Gunn’s specialty.
Peacemaker, if you can stomach the title character’s lunkheaded views (and temporarily forgive if not forget his actions in The Suicide Squad), is a lot of James Gunn fun.
What makes Peacemaker such an interesting and compelling character is his unrepentant awfulness, and the series choosing to back-pedal on what could be considered his defining traits only makes for an aggressively fine follow-up.
So far, many of the superhero shows invading TV (Marvel and DC) have been a be careful what you wish for propositions: want more character and less mindless action? Well, that only works when the characters are multi-dimensional and the writing is top-notch. Argue all you want, about what’s been seen on Disney+ so far (and the less said about the embarrassing DC/The CW, the better), but “Peacemaker” does not make a case for its main character’s existence beyond the big screen, let alone as the front and center lead.
The whole crew knocked it out of the park. No bad episodes, not even any weak episodes. Funny and dramatic they do both equally excellently.
I really am looking forward to more of the same.
Thanks to all!
A little of beat and sometimes funny, James first attempt at a show feels like almost something. All the right pieces are the:the show is stylish, confident and light heartedly violent. It's flaw being awkward comedic timing, most of the cast fails at delivering their punchlines (with the exception of the vigilante who is phenomenal! ) . It's enjoyable mostly abd well paced ,season 2 coukd offer much needed growth that would elevate the show to new heights
Based on 3 episode premier.
They took the worst character from the recent Suicide Squad film and gave him a show. The results are pretty much what you would expect.,
Very limited comedy, Comedy that is geared for the mind of a 14 year old, and bland exposition, with gore and violence slathered in as filler. The thing that is genuinely funny is the Eagle and its just a stand in for Groot/King Shark.
All jamming out to an absolutely horrendous sound track of songs that were pop culture B sides even during their heyday. That being the whole late 80s, early 90s hair metal phase. Though a few modern tracks sprinkled in to blend it out such as BAND-MAID / Choose me which is one of the best tracks used in the 3 ep premier
Definitely a massive step down from what Doom Patrol is able to accomplish with comparative ease. Though far more violent than doom patrol.
The end of the 3rd ep sets up the premise of the show clearly and to be fair if future episodes focus more on the humor than the gore there is potential here. They just did a poor job illustrating it in its premier.
4.25/10 rounded down. Given that early January is obscenely light on content, will continue watching as a filler show with the hope it will get better. So basically a two week extended trial period to improve till better shows start/resume.
Edit: 4th episode was a modest improvement but not anywhere near enough to justify increasing the score. Still the same overall problems but the humor was at least a bit more balanced in this episode.
Hard PASS!! I couldn't even get through the 1st episode. Acting is horrible and the main character doesn't make any sense. How this was conceived and passed to 'air' is totally baffling. From the ridiculous "dancing" intro to the disgusting misogynistic attitude of the lead character, this whole premise is deplorable! When his dad spoke, I cringed at his use of vulgar expletives and wondered how this could be accepted as dialog in todays sensitive anti-racist environment. When you throw in the miserably failed attempts at comedy, it easily makes this show a hard pass for me!
The trailer for the show had me wanting more, however, the 1st episode had me groaning in pain and running for the exit. I expected better from DC but, after watching other DC series, I've come to see that their lack of imagination is the norm. With repetitive storylines and eye-rolling "predictable" script lines, DC seems to be in much need of an injection of better writing talent!
