Netflix has brought the series back for a 10-episode sixth season that lives up to the calculated chaos of the original. ... As our newest host, MSNBC’s Alex Wagner often makes for a delightful fly on the wall—especially during more humorous challenges. ... This season’s players, meanwhile, are a well-cast blend of obvious influencers and fascinating on-screen characters.
Dom is one of the few contestants to create a genuine audience connection, talking about his mother and how he’ll bring her the prize money if he wins, while most others remain blank slates beyond a name and occupation even after five episodes. ... Series director Kate Douglas-Walker and team focus on making the game play digestible, against the gorgeous backdrop of Australian nature and history. ... The first batch of episodes make for an easy weekend binge.
The Mole isn’t quite as fun as the Anderson Cooper version, but it’s still a solid reality competition format that we’re glad is getting new life with Netflix.
The challenge design is solid, and Wagner has the makings of a strong host. (If her interactions with the contestants seem a bit tightly scripted, that rhymes with just about everything else the contestants do.) ... While something is clearly afoot, I emerged from the first five episodes genuinely uncertain where even to begin casting my suspicions. In the absence of players whose personalities give us something to really grab onto, the pleasure of a well-structured game can be enough.
