ZeroZeroZero is a sprawling, hardly original drug drama enlivened by exciting action, bravura filmmaking and tangible atmosphere. And Andrea Riseborough shines as a queen bee in waiting.
It’s a credit to the writing and performances that ZeroZeroZero doesn't collapse under its zeal for bombast. Instead, this is a dark, exuberant cocaine opera, bleak escapism for long February nights.
I really really like it. The editing, photography, acting, were all perfect. The way the story is told, from diferente points of view of the different characters, adds a really original and interesting point of the show. It’s not the usual narcos tv show, or drug show. Wow.
I don't think ZeroZeroZero has the same emotional depth as Narcos, but from a visual standpoint, I'll give it the edge. As far as the performances go, DeHaan, Riseborough and Byrne are all solid, and though they're the only recognizable actors in the cast, that actually works in the show’s favor. .... If this show does prove to be a one-season wonder, its final minute is stunning.
Genre familiarity may make ZeroZeroZero less fresh, but it remains quite watchable, if you can ignore its vaguely nihilistic streak, thanks to a good cast, confident direction and cinematography that's really quite stunning at times.
A decent fix. It’s not the pure stuff, but it will tide you over. ... The American story line is the strength of “Zerozerozero” — when it’s onscreen, there’s more to watch than a coolly efficient international crime thriller.
It may go a bit overboard on what can be considered plausible, but at least it doesn't cheat itself and stays completely focused on plot, tone and atmosphere. And by that I mean how oppressive and bleak it is in its portrayal of greed and drug trafficking. It offers nothing new in terms of addressing these issues, but I can't deny the appeal and unfortunate entertainment of such a story.
In one way or another, it offers some perspectives that might seem to glorify these characters, such as the Mexican military man who ends up becoming a cartel leader, but the series itself makes for an excellent thriller.
It demands time and patience, but trust me, it's worth it.
Exciting, fast paced, show with great style. The atmosphere of everything on this is very "fresh", reminds me of the movie Collateral. The plot is easy to follow and engaging as well as the acting. The environments and cinematography will keep your eyes on the screen. The soundtrack works exceptionally well, a bit of a Friday Night Lights vibe imo.
Excellent first two/three episodes where has-been Gabriel Byrne and Tcheky Karyo went for a pay-check. Good on them for stealing money from Bezos! Cinematography, writing, and pacing are up there with the best series.
Then it goes downhill too fast unfortunately, with an African side story where ludicrous plot twists really demand a lot in terms of suspension of disbelief. Almost as nonsensical is the Italian constant revolving doors of alliances as if in a 19th vaudeville. I disagree with the critics on the American side being the most compelling. The acting is over-the-top and grating. The Italian side is the most beautifully photographed and the Mexican, the most realistic.
