In order to fulfil your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit your their weaknesses, and neutralize their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force. Real-time story telling, systemic auto-healing, minimal in-game interface are just few of the features that make you feel the tension of being alone against barbarous warlords that threaten thousands of innocent lives. Choose from a wide range of weapons to make your way to your primary target. Meet the fight head-on with your machine-gun, go berserk with your machete or make stealth kills as a Sniper. If you feel that the atmosphere is not warm enough, light up your flamethrower and let your enemies and everything around them feel the heat. [Ubisoft] Expand

The unique setting, brilliant AI and palpable atmosphere, make Far Cry 2 a quintessential PC gaming experience. [Dec 2008, p.63]
  2. After playing Far Cry 2, I'm simply unable to go back to straight and simple first-person shooters. This game has executed my expectations. [Nov 2008, p.62]

Unusual in that a first person shooter shows you the fictitious African country where real crimes against the civil population are fought in the name of profit. An intense experience in all aspects. [Nov 2008]
  4. It has its shortcomings, but it still makes its mark as one of the best releases of the year, at this point. The graphics and setting alone make it a real stand-out, and I like the fact that Ubisoft tried to go after something a bit more unique in a genre that is known for rampant replication.

Combat is thrilling – each weapon packing a solid, vicious blast; movement suggesting heft and momentum. [Dec 2008, p.80]
  6. Visually impressive and ambitious but ultimately falls short of the hype. Attempts very hard to immerse you in a realistic sandbox world but fails to be anything but a simple, repetitive shooter. Driving across beautiful but lifeless world while fighting infinitely respawning enemies to complete unimaginative missions for people who all try to kill you can be summed up as beautiful but disappointing.
  7. In 2007, Ubisoft sent to Africa a whole team of Far Cry 2 developers so they could record sounds, take pictures and soak in the spirit of "Heart of Darkness". Judging by the promotional videos, the guys had the time of their lives. It's a pity that the game fails to convey even the tiniest fracture of their emotions.

Born in an age for better graphics, better story line, better simulation, this game takes it all for the Far Cry nostalgia. Cars are easy to use BECAUSE of the simplicity the original Far Cry style. Everything from this game is colored in a way that can only speak realism and immersive. The characters speak all in a very serious voice, as if the world has shaped them into becoming this more psychopathic person. Unlike Far Cry 3, not all the villagers are dumbass sheep, they know what's happening... although I'll agree sometimes the voice acting is too dull. This game has a great sequel and a greater sequel of a sequel, but they're all missing aspects that this game alone has adopted: partners to save you before you die on the battlefield, a world you can truly explore without limit, all missions are main missions which means you can truly choose what to do first and second. All parts of the map are enjoyable although not defined properly. overall 9/10 even for 2008. Expand

For me personally this is a huge bonus...i say hooray because i hated Far Cry after the first few levels. Stupid AI that you had to pump 10,000 rounds of ammo into before they died...rubbish! This game has a slower pace and a brilliant open environment. I'm happy to drive about taking in the sights. Sit on a hill scouting out a target before attack. Yes some of it is repetitive and it's highly annoying the two opposing factions don't actually fight each other. And it would be nice if everybody in the game wasn't out to kill you. Graphics are lush, sounds are nice. Vehicle models are good. Weapons feel good. I can see why people are upset with this game and why it's scoring so low with quite a few users. It's simply not fast paced or moving seemlessly from mission to mission like COD4. The story and characters in COD4 were excellent, this doesn't compare. The lame multiplayer doesn't help. But i'm happy. It's nice to have something slower and open ended. Expand

Far Cry 2 is a beautiful, but mediocre game. The comparisons to Assassin's Creed are appropriate in that there is an amazing world for Far Cry 2 is a beautiful, but mediocre game. The comparisons to Assassin's Creed are appropriate in that there is an amazing world for you to get bored in quickly. The respawning checkpoints and long travel times make the game feel so repetitive. With Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead being released at around the same time you could get a lot more for your money. Pick this up when it's $15-20. Expand

For all the site admin bitch about user ballot-stuffing, it seems they're content to let PC Gamer do it. Probably because PC Gamer pays for the space and we don't.
