Exploring Terror In Layers Of Fear 2
May 28, 2019The jump scares are a bit overdone, same as the original Layers of Fear, and there’s an abysmal chase sequence in the second act that could’ve been cut completely. Still, Bloober Team’s rapidly proved itself as a master of psychological horror, using symbolism in ways most games don’t even attempt, let alone achieve. So what if it’s not very scary? There’s more important work to be done. Great work.
Jun 14, 2019Layers of Fear 2 narrates an unnerving and dramatic story about the struggle of the actor to attain the perfect character on a path strewn with abhorrently masked imperfections. It may not be the scariest game ever made, but it's certainly one of the most introspective.
Jun 13, 2019For better or worse Layers of Fear 2 follows very closely the steps of its predecessor. Alas, compared with the first Layers of Fear, its story is less integral to the paranormal events that are happening in front of our eyes, leading to a sense of disconnect between our character and the events unfolding around us. Also, the environment of the cruise ship is not quite as atmospheric as the isolated mansion of a deranged painter.
May 24, 2019The disconnect that the overly convoluted plotline produces mixed with the detachment I felt with the world because of the continually shifting environment left made the whole thing feel hollow to me. I can’t recommend Layers of Fear 2 unless you just absolutely love the genre and have played everything else out there.

Layers of Fear is a very personal experience, so the best advice I can give is that you don't take in account the opinion of others. It is a game that you need to experience for yourself.
Also, this is not a game for everyone. To fully enjoy you need to have in mind that this is a game very different than any other game out there.
To enjoy it you need to have patience, to pay attention to every detail, to take your time, and to play it more than once.
Just as the name says, the experience is made by more than one layer, and the more times you play it more you discover and it makes more sense.
The first time I finished this game I felt a bit disappointed. That's because this time Bloober was more ambitious and experimented a major variety of ambiences and a even more abstract aproach to the storytelling. But then I just took some time to think about the game and writed down some ideas about what I saw in it. I created some theories. And this was the part when the fun began.
I felt like the game was finally taking form in my mind.
Then I started to play a second time and every detail was making way more sense this time. That was the point when I felt that this really was something that came out from Bloober Team's minds.
Now I am loving the game just as I loved the first one.
I already started my 3rd playthrough as I said before, and I am really enjoying the game a lot more than when I played it for the first time.
So my advice is:
- This is not a game for everyone.
- This is not totally equal to the first one, so take your time to put the pieces of the story together and play more than once.
- Don't be so hard on trying to figure out everything on the story. There's no right or wrong version. That's the beauty of it. The truth is what you believe it is and what makes more sense to YOU.

From cheap scenes in which you are being hunted by a monster to locked doors that spawn new corridors behind you, nothing really feels new. It is basically the first game but a bit longer.
Story was pretty weak compared to the first one also and it did not scare me much.
Other "walking simulators" do it better. Bloober Team needs to come up with something new, the formula has lost its spark.… Expand
May 28, 2019This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Layers of weird.
The game starts out slow with minor chills and creeps you slowly by slowly. My favorite type of beginning of a thrilling experience, until you actually notice you are getting no where with the story line. Randomly added pop-up scares every other second until you get tired of the most significant horror of monster mannequins that simply just try to grab and kill you, giving you the one and only exact death scene every time they do. The devs tried so hard to add weirdness poetry into the game every room you get into, you realize you are not having fun with the game at all. Positive points were the graphics and voice acting. Would definitely not play again, and not interested in a sequel. There are many better low-budget horror games out there with better story lines. Pass… Expand
