For all the fervent hatred of Konami that forms the current gaming-hate-bandwagon of choice, based on its own merits, Metal Gear Survive isn’t a terrible game. It’s not a great one for sure, and certainly not near the pedigree we expect from a Metal Gear product, but it’s a serviceable enough survival game that benefits greatly from layering in a few of The Phantom Pain’s systems. It won’t scratch that same itch of sneaky badassery that has made Snake a household name, and it’s almost certainly not worth the full $40 / £35 asking price, but there’s definitely fun to be had here even if it doesn’t come close to troubling the series’ heights.

The concept of Metal Gear Survive works, but some annoying mechanics and the soullessness diminish the fun.

The single player, oddly, is the best part of Metal Gear Survive. I say “oddly” because it’s billed as a co-op game primarily. But the online multiplayer is just sort of “Horde Mode”, and we’ve all done that again and again for a decade now.

Survive rather than a full-featured Metal Gear reminds of a fanfiction, which wants to honour the series. Unfortunately, it gets repetitive very quickly and certainly does not take the right example from its predecessors. [Issue#284]

All of the issues that I’ve outlined with Metal Gear Survive essentially boil down to one thing: the vast majority of the game feels boring. It takes quite a long time for certain aspects of the game to stop feeling tedious, and its very easy to feel discouraged from playing altogether as it takes so long for the game to feel like its actually going somewhere. If you can be bothered to sit through hours of hunting, completing repetitive missions and accumulating skill points at a painfully slow rate, you’ll eventually feel comfortable enough to focus on the crazy story. If exploration and survival is your cup of tea, this one may be for you. If not, this is not worth your time.

Metal Gear Survive’s underlying concept is not bad and the game has a couple of good moments, but I can’t recommend it to anyone. It’s best to steer clear of it. [04/2018, p.54]

Using The Phantom Pain’s engine, its models, animations and other assets, Metal Gear Survive looks like a shoddy fan modification.

If you are into a somewhat demanding survival experience with a Metal Gear base to it, this is for you. It's a fun game on it's own. Will that change the fact many have a vendetta against the game? Nah. Fun co-op though, too. Expand

    1) This is NOT an expansion of MGS series, but a spin-off created as a totally different game. The only reason this game is connected to MGS1) This is NOT an expansion of MGS series, but a spin-off created as a totally different game. The only reason this game is connected to MGS universe - re-used engine and assets from MGS5:Phantom Pain. If you expect experience similar to previous MGS games - you wont be able to find it here. this is a totally different game, so continue only if you agree to accept it as something totally new and known.

    2) Pay2Win? This game could be ok as freemium game with micro-transactions, but not as full-priced game. Small example: for a full price you will get only 1(!) character slot and if you want to create additional character you will have to pay about $10 for each additional slot. Not to mention that some features definitely give ingame advantages to continuously paying customers - not as bad as BF2 and it is just PvE related, but it does not affect after match rewards, but also in-game experience during match .

    3) If you are still reading this and consider to try this game - I highly recommend you to go for console version if possible. PC version is no more that a terrible lazy-made port from consoles - and this is the true reason why user scores for PC version are much lover than for PS4 of XBox versions is you compare.

New content for MGO3? Remake the classics? Add online modes to the HD Collection? Nope, they created a game literally no one wanted instead. Epic business move there. What's next? MGS1 remake outsourced to Blizzard? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I giving it a 0 but actually Im thinking of a -6. Why because Konami gives a darn about videogames.

The only thing that Konami cares is about gambling services and this is only a social experiment to consider to proceed. The moment when Knonami no longer cared about videogames anymore is when Konami fired Hideo Kojima most especifictly the CEO of the company.
Silent Hills P.T. was in development and they cancelled it and Metal Gear V The phantom pain almost not got finished.
The CEO stated at that time that he hated Kojima because was no making money and he taked long time to develop. He was also sabotaging last Metal Gear solid to not be finished. The most controversial statement was he mentioned he was only interested in Pachinko.
So my question is why they keep developing videogames? They just want to follow EA Battlefront 2 bussiness plan. To make online gambling services, cheaply done just to make quick and easy profits.

What Konami forgots as EA and other scum companies is that videogamers want videogames, not gambling services and we hate that stin-ky type of bussiness. That´s why their videogames department deserve to flop and continue on the Pachinko market exclusively.

Only those who never played consoles before or got recently some gaming rig would get this lame excuse for a game. This is a piece of endless suc king su cker money with no more intentions than that and paying for a 2nd game slot is just the beginning.

You pay 40 dollars for a full game and then you need to pay extra 10 for another f*****g savegame slot? Are u f*****g kidding me konami???You pay 40 dollars for a full game and then you need to pay extra 10 for another f*****g savegame slot? Are u f*****g kidding me konami??? This game is total disaster guys. Seriously, there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING fun with this game. You just go out in the middle of nowhere, stabbing zombies through the fence for hours, getting recourses, then back to base, upgrade, and the circle continues. That's it, there's your game. And then again there's those f*****g loot crates, IN A F*****G SINGLE-PLAYER! COME ON! There is absolutely zero reason to buy this crap "game", it's absolute bulls**t Expand
