It's fun when you cooperate with friends and get out of the crowd of zombies by sneaky ways. But due to the dull shooting experience and repeated puzzles, it hardly ever satisfies me.

I enjoyed Overkill’s The Walking Dead but perhaps more as a concept. Playing with a friend makes the experience much more enjoyable; however, the price point is a concern given all the issues I had with the game. To this day, it doesn’t feel complete. Granted, it has the potential to be an AAA game but given its current state, The Walking Dead certainly feels like a budget title. Before you make the plunge (and I recommend you do strongly consider the purchasing the game), I’d recommend holding out until we see a price drop or when for it gets fine-tuned.

OVERKILL's The Walking Dead is a clever take on the series with a subtle mix of stealth and gunfights to survive the numerous foes of the lore. Sadly, the game is ruined by bugs, the lack of tutorial, the long loading times, and a lack of vocal chat and the balance problems.

Overkill's The Walking Dead is an ambitious online multiplayer experience. It nails the aesthetic of The Walking Dead universe. However, it struggles in almost every other department. Bugs and game-halting instances have been very apparent in the near 20 hours spent with it.

Despite the excellent foundation on which it is based, Overkill's The Walking Dead is a mediocre production. Although it can still be saved, at present, the excessive repetitiveness and the artificial difficulty imposed by the developers make playing and progressing simply frustrating, ruining the experience.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead plans to dole out content in seasons, so the current batch of missions will soon expand. But dramatic reworking of most core combat and mission systems are necessary before the game could be worthy of a recommendation. The premise sounds promising for fans of cooperative play, zombie action, and the taut survival storylines implied by the license. The execution fails to meet the needs of any of those groups. You’re better off heeding the warning – keep this menacing door closed, and leave the zombies to their gnawing hunger.

Imagine reaching the final minutes of an hour-long mission only for your connection to drop and, in turn, your progress to be lost. Overkill’s The Walking Dead certainly stokes the player’s despair, but not the sort that its developers intended.

Expand

Update: Fanboys with buyer's remorse and shills might be able to spam Metacritic (Really, this game is a 10/10 perfect game for all of you?Update: Fanboys with buyer's remorse and shills might be able to spam Metacritic (Really, this game is a 10/10 perfect game for all of you? How interesting.) But it's harder to fake Steam reviews. Go check that out instead.

I'll start with some positives: the game looks impressive on the surface and has a solid franchise to stand upon. While the Walking Dead television show is a boring trainwreck built on the suburban couple's over investment and stubbornness to break a bad habit, "Overkill's The Walking Dead" is primarily based on the comics, which still hold a glimmer of hope.

The game is bland, boring and repetitive. The camp system is a bust and not at all interesting. (Think Payday safehouse level of uninteresting) There isn't enough variety, the talent/skill trees all end up the same eventually and they need to balance weapons: all these symptoms add up to one diagnosis- the game is severely over-priced and needs some serious polish. At it's current state, it's a $35~ game, and yes, even with the "season 2" missions planned. But all of that is obvious, I want to touch upon points that other people might not talk about.

The worst part about "Overkill's The Walking Dead" is seeing incredibly obvious mistakes that the developers shouldn't be making at this stage in their career. These are the folks that made Payday- they already have understand the basic framework, but still make blunders like not having proper voice communication settings. In the beta, it was constant open-mic, no choice on the matter. Now, it's tied to your steam settings. . . If this was their first game and they were some two-man indie company, that wouldn't be an issue, but these guys have been at it for years. It would be like if Blizzard just up and decided not to include a screen resolution setting.

Another minor mistake is that there can be multiple copies of characters in a game where that obviously doesn't work. You can have three Grants or Maya Twins- had these been faceless schmucks without deep background lore or personality, it would have been fine, but this isn't that kind of game. Again, these devs made Payday. The kicker? Payday already HAS a system, in which no two players can be the same character. I have to assume that Overkill simply didn't have time to implement the system or some similar excuse.

Experiencing "Overkill's The Walking Dead" is like being a professor and watching your student fail the same course two semesters in a row. (three semesters if you count that God-awful RAID game) You keep hoping that they'll learn from the previous time, but they just don't and there's not much you can do except sigh and shake your head in quiet disappointment. Refund the game if you can and if you can't resist, wait until it's 50% off or better. No one should be shoveling their cash into a furnace, even to keep warm for the winter.

As a side note: They say the game won't have lootboxes, but we've seen that song and dance (and eventual betrayal, followed by hasty backtracking from community backlash) before with Payday. Let's see if they can actually keep that promise this time. One can hope.
