  • Summary: Besiege Great Khans, Imperial warlords and Shōgun commanders in Stronghold: Warlords, the latest 'castle sim' from Firefly Studios. Command AI warlords across the battlefield as you build a castle economy and new gunpowder-fuelled siege engines.

Stronghold Warlords takes the winning formula of the series and returns to the original's near-perfect form while improving on almost all aspects of the game. The newly added warlords mechanic didn't strike my fancy in the way I suppose the developers would have wanted, but that's not because it's a bad addition, just that it needs some tweaking to make it a more integral part of the game.

When it’s fun, it’s really fun. When it isn’t, it’s still totally competent. The final thought will have to come down to whether or not building and knocking down castles sounds like a fun way to spend an evening. If so, then perhaps Stronghold: Warlord is a castle worth besieging.

Stronghold Warlords has a refreshing East Asian setting and satisfying castle building, but it looks and plays like an RTS that was asleep for most of the last decade or two.

Stronghold: Warlords is an odd game. On the one hand, it’s a wonderful setting, and it has some of the most satisfying castle building I’ve found in a game. It’s a genuine joy to plan everything out, and it makes the fact that the actual strategy side of the game feels a bit outdated sting a bit more. It’s not bad, not at all, but it feels like a game that’s stuck in the past a little bit.

A decent if generic strategy game that lacks the big personality and siegecraft of earlier entries.

If we will deplore the fights of great classicism, an often routed AI, an insufficiently dense multiplayer mode or a campaign without flavor in terms of stakes, Warlords always retains the pleasant character of the series in its management aspect, and satisfactory when our army creates breaches in abundance in the enemy ramparts.

This is yet another completely useless title from the Stronghold series, which actually does not bring anything interesting and simplifies the old proven principles even more. What lies behind the reasons for the release of such a game is a mystery to me, when, apart from the well-known brand, the game offers practically nothing and everything is incredibly sold out and rushed with a hot needle. This game is exactly the same as the old ones with just different ethnics and now you can rotate the camera, a good game but doesnt do anything new and imo isnt as charming as Crusader.

I suppose you can say it's playable unlike some previous Stronghold games that seemingly never left the Alpha Phase of development, I guess? But at the same time it seems prone to crashing without even giving an error popup. It just vanishes from the screen. It also runs shockingly poorly for something that looks like it was unironically made in 2006.

The new "Warlord" thing is also a gimmick and largely an inconsequential nothing outside of handicapping player resources or otherwise locking the Win-Trigger in singleplayer behind controlling all of the Warlords.

Of which the singleplayer missions are also rife with literally non-functional AI that just gets waves of units spawned in at the map edge and cant even be bothered to maintain an economy or repair their crumbling destroyed castle. They just sit there as you wittle away at them and nonsensically spam armies that spawn in at the sides of the map at you. Sometimes so often in some missions that it's a test of patience and seeing if you can manage the amount of trash-tier meatshield spam you need and doing the actual objective.

Literally a 5/10 game. Functional but barely. Almost feels like a Knock-Off Stronghold game.

Outdated game in most aspects. A disappointment.
Optimization at launch is not good at all too.
Stronghold Crusader HD is a much better game

Stronghold Crusader HD is a much better game even right now. And Stronghold: Warlords is a very bad copy of it with nothing really new, except for setting and improved UI. And controversial Warlords mechanics is bad at least.
