The Missing's self-harm mechanic is deliberately uncomfortable and inscrutable, as the disturbing process clashes with its bizarre, often humorous results.

The Missing – J.J. MacField and the Island of Memories combined it's puzzle-platformer gameplay and narrative in a way that truly makes use of the medium and highlight's it's best potential. Difficult subject matter and a leaning toward the surreal drive a story that touches upon aspects of humanity that are rarely explored in games.

Swery proves that his storytelling skills are unlike any other in the industry – I would only wish that someone helped him to design better puzzles. [13/2018, p.80]

The Missing is a good puzzle platformer, with inspiring atmosphere. The puzzles are good, sometimes a bit too brainy.

The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories is a game full of feels and pain, that uses a puzzle game to tell a story of searching and growing up in our strange and bad world.

JJ has to impale herself, burn herself alive and suffer all other kinds of mutilation in order to progress. Even when you get accustomed to that, The Missing keeps getting under your skin in many other ways. [Issue#234, p.62]

A short, dark trip through the nightmare of youth; growing up, discovering yourself, and existing among a society that rarely understands. Sure to be a divisive title, there are those who will find The Missing overpriced and melodramatic, while others will be taken by its surrealist story of undying friendship, ironically becoming an indelible memory to those who dare to experience it.

A wonderfully unique limbo-like that starts with girls kissing and ends with girls kissing.
The mechanics are gross, don't buy if repeatedly

This game is fantastic. From the art direction to the story I am in love with it. The music is also spot on.

Its story and characters are executed extremely well, and I would say that the message is one of the strongest I've seen in a game in years.

This game is very "Swery," which goes for better and for worse - the controls are kind of bad, the production values aren't always great, and the puzzles can feel clunky; but don't let that hold you back. It is 1000% worth experiencing.

No surprise for a SWERTY game, the story is the highlight and I highly suggest avoiding spoilers. The gameplay is also unique and perfectly intertwined with the narrative. The story literally would not be the same without the rather gruesome self harm mechanics. I know this won't be everyone's cup of tea but it's easily my game of the year. Expand

Unfortunately, if you take the story out of the equation, this is probably the worst game I've ever finished. Controls, performance, QoL... it's like if someone gave the developer a $300 budget, three weeks, high school drama students for voice actors, and the Dreams engine, and asked them to design a Limbo clone.
