Tormented Souls deliberately sets out to draw inspiration from classic survival horror. From Resident Evil and Silent Hill, to Alone in the Dark - Tormented Souls is a modern take on the fixed-perspective adventure, offering a modernised control scheme and a more dynamic camera, while retaining everything that made those games so beloved by fans.

Tormented Souls gets way more right than not, and I came away from it very impressed. This was the kind of game that once I got the hang of it (I have not played many survival horror games at all) I became enthralled with playing and exploring every area and uncovering all the secrets and story material I could. This game does not try to advance the genre; it doesn’t do anything particularly new or better than previous champions of the genre have, but for all that it does, it does it very well. I’ll always say there is room in any genre for another solid entry, and that’s what you get here — a great survival horror game built with intentional classic/retro design.

Tormented Souls is the successor to classic survival horror. I’ve wanted a new Silent Hill (or classic Resident Evil) game for years, but I’d trade all the drama and disappointment for a fantastic spiritual successor like this any day. Exploring Winterlake Hospital channeled all those feelings of dread and loneliness that made those games special and proves that the format still works. The biggest issues with Tormented Souls seem like they stem more from a problem with budget more than the devs’ ability. With indie games, there are always compromises that have to be made to launch a title, and I think Dual Effect struck the best balance it could here.

Solid old-school survival horror with an exceptional atmosphere. Suffers from balance issues and a rather mediocre conclusion.

Tormented Souls pays homage to old school gems like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, without adding something new to the formula. If you are a nostalgic of the nineties golden era, you are gonna appreciate it.

Tormented Souls is a good first step for Dual Effect in the world of survival horror: their tribute to the 90s is clear without falling into plagiarism, the puzzles are well thought out, but the game needs a few more touches to make the experience less rigid.

Tormented Souls is a love letter and throwback to the old school survival horror games, warts and all, even including the age-old tank controls found in the games it looks to emulate. Honestly, it does a good job in this, setting the atmosphere, ramping up the stakes and only rarely venturing into the absurd when it comes to puzzle logic. While not completely innocent, with some nonsense puzzles, and a questionable art style for the protagonist, there's enough on offer to keep you going and it makes it more than worth the reasonable price of the game.

Resident Evil 2 Remake shows how to properly blend old-school horror ideas with modern action to create a great game. Tormented Souls ignored all that and tried to copy the original one-to-one, with predictable result: it’s a bland clone of a game two decades old. [Issue#256, p.38]

Puzzles are great and really makes your brain work. Fixed camera and tape is good old solution to make game more scary. There are not many resources (ammo and med-kits), so you should use it very careful. It takes 12-15 hours to complete story.
10/10 the best old school horror since first RE.

A must try for fans of the genre, at worst, and a must-play and finish for people that want that return to early 2000s survival horror, at best.
With a decent price tag and a wide array of platforms to try it on, Tormented Souls is a title that hopefully paves the way for a return to classic survival horror games of this same style.

Fixed-camera is not dead, this game proved that. Puzzles are fine, they're not very complex but not utterly easy, nothing too specialsFixed-camera is not dead, this game proved that. Puzzles are fine, they're not very complex but not utterly easy, nothing too specials compared to most games. Combats are normal, nothing worth noting. Camera angles on the other hand is the sell point of this game. They got the inspiration from the old Resident Evil and Silent Hills games, almost everyone probably knows that. And they did a good job too. There are many points in the game that the limited view angles make the game much more scarier, something third-person view could never achieve. Story is quite interesting too, although no crazy plot twists or something completely new. Also it's worth noting that there are many points in the game, that they forcefully put that horrendous annoying soundtrack on to make the game scarier and they failed (you'll know what I mean). Overall, definitely worth checking out. Expand

Specifically, it has all the gameplay and style of Resident Evil 1 and the absurd "cultist rebirthing an ancient god" plot of Silent Hill 3.

Let's get the good out of the way first:
    - Lots of puzzles, mostly very well designed
    - A fun story that had some weird, enjoyable twists, if a little cliched at times
    - Environmental feel and atmosphere
    - Improvised weapons that are creative and fun to use
    - Doesn't use jumpscares

    Don't like:
    - Combat feels very stop and start, could have been more fluid
    - Certain mechanics which drive the plot are brought up and used once and then completely forgotten about
    - Certain portal/time travel mechanics are NOT explained are just there to make the plot work and are never explained
    - It's too long
    - Very bad voice acting (and not in the fun, campy way)

Overall, this could have been a really tight 4-6 hour experience. The mansion is creepy, the puzzles are well designed, but it just commits one of the cardinal sins of horror games in that it's too long. Backtracking to get certain items, solve certain puzzles, and even get the "best" ending can take hours. That is not fun. There's a lot to love here, and again it's very much a love letter to your RE/SH games of yore, but ultimately it could have used a narrowing of scope and some better combat to truly make this a classic. As it stands, it's a solid game that hopefully the studio will improve upon in future titles.
