There is so much more I want to say about What Remains of Edith Finch. So many thoughts I have about every single character, every single lovingly crafted room in the dusty, abandoned halls of the Finch house. Every single feeling it evoked in me that I didn’t expect to feel, and every thought I have about being made to feel these things so strongly after such a long time.

What Remains of Edith Finch reminded me why I love video games. For the past few months, I’ve been in a bit of a slump and haven’t enjoyed too many games. Nothing really clicked with me. What Remains of Edith Finch changed that. I love video games because they have the ability to tell stories no other medium can tell, at least not in the way What Remains of Edith Finch does. I could see this game as a book but I truly don’t believe it would carry the same emotional resonance that it would in that form. The stories are told in such unique ways, and even though this particular title falls into the genre of a “walking simulator”, it manages to be one of the best video games I’ve played in a very long time.

What Remains of Edith Finch may not be a very challenging game, but the story it tells is one which will undoubtedly resonate with players in ways they may not expect. If anything, it proves yet again that video games can be used to tell some truly immersive and thought-provoking stories, ones which stick with us long after we put down the controller.

It could be the roundest narrative game of the year.

Though it only took me just under two hours to complete, the second the credits stopped rolling I immediately restarted What Remains of Edith Finch. Each of the vignettes is so distinct and surprising that I didn’t have enough time to absorb and dissect what I had just played before being whisked away to the next one. But after fully piecing together the threads of the family and sifting through the allegories of their final moments, I was left with a beautiful, heartbreaking mosaic that exudes life, even when mired in death.

This is probably the most impressive, inventive story about a family curse. And one of the best interactive dramas I've played.

The game tells intriguing stories and leaves room for interpretation but is short, linear and devoid of true tension. [07/2017, p.60]

As the titular Edith, you get to experience the lives and deaths of her family in each uniquely intense vignettes with beautiful settings that meld and undulate with the family house. The graphical design is astounding, further enhanced by the stellar sound and writing. There is little to no challenge but experiencing the gorgeous environment, the doomed but relatable characters, and the outstanding story is easily worth the asking price. Topped off with a simple waxwork message that has me emotionally fragile days after completion and you have a glorious experience that is a must for anyone enjoying the recent surge in unconventional gaming. Take a moment to stand still where you are. Take a few deep breaths. Call off today's appointments before you take your first steps down the dirt road before you. Because this could be one of those rare experiences which you sit through in one turn. Whether you're very much into interactive storytelling or not, it'll be very hard to not appreciate this little masterpiece. And I say little because, yes, it's short. Even if you want to unravel every little secret which the game has to offer. Still it won't take you more than you'd need to even get past the tutorial of some titles.
But oh what a little trip it is. The storytelling is magnificent. The atmosphere is truly majestic. Mysteries lay hidden around you waiting to be unravelled. And the way the story makes you trace every corner of the house and it's surroundings is truly incredible, mysterious and gripping. You care for what happened to the family and it manages to make you bond with anyone involved in the sad, but at the same time somehow enlightening, trip down the house's mysterious past. In terms of graphics does the game not only look beautiful, but the way it presents every aspect of the family's past is often extremely creative and original. There have been several titles which provide the same kind of style and atmosphere. Take "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter", "Dear Esther", "Everybody's gone to the rapture" and most similarly "Gone Home". All of them made a similar impression on me. Making me think and wonder about the mysteries I witnessed. But none of the above stood as tall as "What Remains of Edith Finch". Tall in mystery. Tall in emotion. Tall in beauty. But mainly tall in storytelling. A title which manages to switch your emotions up and down almost constantly. Mixing sadness and joy into a satisfying yet eerie blend. A level of interactive storytelling which hasn't been reached before in this genre in my opinion and therefore sets the bar very high for upcoming titles of it's kind.

Anyone who enjoyed games like Firewatch, Dear Esther, Virginia and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter will really enjoy this game. I cant recommend it enough. Quite short at about 2 hours but well worth the price even at that short length. Features some really simple yet innovative game play and the story and voice acting are top notch. The visuals are well done though not the best we've seen but it still packs an emotional punch. Highly recommended and a Top Ten game of the year for me. Expand

There is absolutely no point to the story, there is no interesting or thought provoking ending that might justify the pain of having to sit through it. You just finish the game with the sensation that you just wasted 3 hours of your time walking painfully slowly through someone's house. I found FIrewatch far more interesting, and I would easily recommend it above and beyond this game. This is a truly laughable, pointless, time-wasting experience, that tries hard to tear jerk you and eventually fails even at that. Expand
