If you want realism and beauty, X-Plane 11 is for you. If you want pretty but not necessarily accurate and unrealistic flight, then go with MSF. You can get addons for missions or challenges (I like Air Hauler 2 for missions and building a company). Fly wherever in the world. With addons it can be expensive, but amazing (some great addons are free too).I spend way too much time in X-Plane 11 using the PC edition without Steam.
Want to explore the world from above? Want to find challenging places to land? Want to practice for real flight? This is for you. Using some networks, you can fly with human ATC (or become one of those ATC). A very good ATC is available as a plugin free. I would do either of those options as the biggest problem with X-Plane has always been the built in ATC is awful and you are better off ignoring it in many cases. I use the free ATC plugin that works flawlessly. That plugin is called 124thATCv2.
Best Flight Sim ever made, Ive played A few Flight Simulator games, but this just takes mechanics and simulation to extreme realism while the graphics aren't the best the mechanics and overall gameplay and feel makes up for it.
I've recently got an actual Sport Pilot license and so I can compare playing this game with flying real single-engine light aircraft.
This is first and foremost - a flight simulator, most useful for training/practice piloting real aircraft. It doesn't have typical "game" elements per se, and some might find it lacking in that regard. But that would be pretty absurd.
I cannot comprehend how R_pilotkostGR says that this game doesn't have good scenery and environment. Personally I was amazed how the Global Scenery mod contains the ENTIRE WORLD modelled within about a 50Gb download package.
Of course, if one comes in expecting GTA-V level of detail on a map containing the entire planet - they would be disappointed. A solution like that would likely be available, perhaps from MS Flight Sim 2020 - when they finally release it with streaming world data in real-time (as you're flying) from a server containing many Terabytes of Googe Earth data. That, or you'll need to have a local hard drive set with all that data. Both solutions are potentially feasible for semi-professional pilot training and practice.
The map weather editor has some GUI buttons become inactive, requiring an alt+tab from and to the application to re-activate the buttons.
The world quality of Global Scenery mod is pretty damn amazing - I've tried flying in multiple areas, from Los Angeles and San Francisco area to a town in Siberia, Russia - the _practical_ realism (in terms of layout of the roads and terrain) - is amazing.
The _visual_ realism is so-so - meaning you get American-looking streets and trucks on the street in Russian cities -I guess they used one set of assets to fill the entire world.
The fidelity of aircraft - depends on where you get each aircraft from (they are sold separately). I've bought models of the light general aviation aircraft I fly in real life (Cessna-172, Pipersport Sportcruiser, Diamondstar DA-40), and would say they are modelled pretty damn realistically! I cannot attest to how true-to-life a 747 or SR-71 Blackbird is modelled in this game - but it seems to have A TON of buttons in the cockpit, and things like spooling up/down the APU are modelled realistically.
AI which controls aircraft traffic in this game is somewhat hit-or-miss, depending on the airport.
In some airports, _some_ of the spawn/starting points are broken - they spawn you on top of a building, or better yet inside it. But, the developers of the Global Scenery mod couldn't possibly polish and thoroughly test every single airport in the world!
Overall, I believe this is the best realistinc flight simulator for actual pilot practice/training to this day.
OTOH, as a game - it's still useable, and can be fun! It's totally possible to just jump into something like a Boeing-747, a B-1 Lancer or the SR-71 Blackbird - already spawned on the runway for you, with all system already activated, and all 4 engines running on idle, so all you need to do is push your throttle all the way forward and pull up once you get some speed - and chances are you will be able to takeoff.
"Throttle-and-stick" arcade flying is still possible in X-Plane, if you don't want to bother yourselves learning how to actually operate all the systems on an aircraft.
This means X-Plane-11 can be used to facilitate excitement with aviation among non-pilots. My girlfriend who doesn't know what an aileron is - managed to land a Cessna, with ~15kn crosswind, with some advice on how to do it :-)
The only reason it's a 9 and not a 10 is because it does lack things like realistic airspace, and because the fog is somewhat pop-in-pop out. The fog is NOT volumetric, and is unrealistic in that it "turns off" your view of what's outside if you're more than a certain altitude above ground, which makes practice of foggy approaches to landing very unrealistic. There's no "I can barely see things". You see absolutely nothing, until you trigger the "ok you're low enough, I'll start rendering the terrain for you" at which point you see things pretty clearly but VERY close to you.
Only for real flight enthusiasts.
It is absolutely not a game, there are no missions, fights and adrenaline arcade flights: it is a simulator, and many people unfortunately can not understand it. I really enjoy learning how to pilot airliners. I'm not a real driver, so I do not know how true the simulation is, but it seems high level.
I limit the vote to 7 because of the scarcity of aircraft (only a dozen, all the others are paid) and the graphics can be improved.
This game is extremely overpriced. It is only for those that dont care about the scenery and the enviroment. It has literaly the poorest environment and scenery effects. If i had to buy FSX or X-plane 11 that would definatly FSX(I have both) cause the developers didnt really cared about the world. Its a 60$ game and the only realistic that it has by default its the flight dynamics and the flight models, not even the sounds. For real DO NOT buy this game if you are fan of the scenery and the environment effects. (just to add also that IT HAS NO seasons like summer winter autumn, so there are no similar textures not even snow)
I don’t know how they can say this is the most realistic. It’s terrible they have a lot of heliports that have trees growing out of them they have them in the middle of the road sometimes and since their update extremely limited on aircraft can use it’s a waste of money
