Well, not entirely... One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. And life is not easy for the Roman legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium. Peace reigns in the small Armorican village, where the villagers go about their daily business. Our two heroes, Asterix and Obelix, hunt wild boar, the blacksmith and the fishmonger quarrel, and the village chief strolls around the village square atop his shield. After a fine day's hunting, Asterix and Obelix return to find their village in flames, pillaged by the Romans! They set off to rescue their fellow villagers, accompanied by their faithful Dogmatix. Their journey will take them to Normandy, Greece Helvetia, Egypt and, finally, Rome, in order to save the villagers from the clutches of the emperor Caesar... Expand

This is a solid remastered of the 128-bit era title, that has aged better than we expected. It isn’t particularly long and we miss a coop mode, but overall it’s an enjoyable adventure.

Asterix & Obelix XXL: Romastered shows the weight of 17 years in its ancient gameplay structure, plagued by glitches and significant frame rate drops.

Asterix & Obelix XXL Romastered is a timid dusting off of a 17-year-old game which, as it is, shows the weight of years. Archaic structure and game systems alongside quite a few visual bugs and significant framerate drops on consoles.

Some games demand a remaster, to be brought bang up to date for an entirely new audience to find and enjoy. Asterix & Obelix XXL is not one of those games. In 2003 it was a solid, if unremarkable, effort. Now, seventeen years later, it just feels entirely unnecessary, with drab combat, pointless collectables and frustrating challenges. If you really need an Asterix and Obelix fix, best just go back and reread the comics I'd say.
