Madden NFL 17 turned a corner. While it hasn't overhauled its entire system to the point that it looks like a game-changer, the little aspects make the follow-up more polished. Kudos to EA Sports to stepping up its game.

Madden NFL 17 is more immediate, more accessible and funner. Franchise Mode is deeper and really complete now. Madden NFL 17 is a turning point for the saga.

If Franchise mode is your bag, then yes, you’ll want the new model. The upgraded run mechanics and countless small improvements certainly keep it a step ahead of Madden 16. But those looking for a game-changing, highlight-reel play should hold off. EA has moved the needle again, but not the final score.

If you love NFL this will be a great addition to your collection with the depth available and the control given.

Madden NFL 17 is an incredible game of football, however it feels like the safest step forward in a while.

Madden NFL 17 isn’t leaps and bounds ahead of what EA Tiburon was able to accomplish last year, but it builds on a very solid foundation with only a few hiccups and annoyances to speak of.

I used to play NCAA and avoid madden like the plague. But this year I have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy madden. The presentation is great feels like a real NFL broadcast. the gameplay is fluid and dynamic anything can happen. and the Franchise mode is deep and robust. If you play the game like me I highly recommend this years game. Expand

-Zone plays better than Madden 16
    -Playmaker has been toned down

    CONS
-The “wide open” elite receiver dropped passes percentage is just way too high.
    -Run pass glitch.

The Madden franchise is back again, just like every other year, and with a new year means new bugs. First off, there’s a new glitch known as the run and pass glitch. The Run and Pass glitch is pretty much where you are playing an opponent that knows exactly what play you are running therefor he is able to defend it. I will say, it’s extremely hard to beat an opponent that knows what you are doing. Second off, the fact that elite receivers are dropping wide open passes is just ridiculous, this percentage is way too high and most likely will be fixed. Some good changes to the game are the fact that the “Playmaker” function has been toned down to a reasonable rate. Last year, using playmaker was just “OP” (overpowered) you were able to control multiple receivers while in the pocket . This year, you are only allowed to control the nearest receiver to you.

When I first bought Madden 17 for the PS4 I was extremely excited to see what this season’s edition had to offer. Little did i know, i was in or a big disappointment. This year was just like every other year, same game, same teams, just tweaked some things here and there. Honestly, it took me a little while to find something new that’s been implemented into the game, but now that i have found just a few things i really feel that this year’s edition of Madden has a chance to be different from all the others. Overall, I think that Madden is developing and with the right updates and tweaks the game can be a much better product. I would recommend this game to somebody that doesn’t get mad easily, because it is a very rage inducing game. Also, if you are looking for a game to just play with your friends, I would stick to Call of Duty or even the NBA franchise.

However, after multiple game changing patches from EA this game has returned to the dumbed-down, arcade styles of the past. The fun organic gameplay right out of the box seems to be gone sadly. Now, not even slider sets can save this junk. Really disappointed. Not sure why EA chose to do this but this game is apparently back to the level of madden 16. They patched out all the improvements to gameplay while legacy issues still plague on. Why does my WR still drop 4 open passes even though I spent XP on the "Doesn't drop open passes" skill? Why does the CPU always catch the ball no matter how heavy the contact is in traffic. Same slider settings and my WRs drop the ball from the slightest contact, no matter if they had plenty of time to secure the ball. I swear I'll blow a gasket the next time I hear the announcer proclaim "A nice hit which jarred the ball loose! Incomplete!" Lol, more like CPU bandaid.

This game has no consistency. I have the blocking slider at zero for both user and cpu, and there is no pass rush. QBs complete passes plus 70% easily, even the scrubs. The running game is either get stuffed or break a 70 yard td. I've tried tons slider combos, nothing works. What the hell EA? This game was great upon release, but you've ruined it now. What else? The different catch types are utterly worthless. By the time the ball zips over to the player you won't have time to pick the proper catch type anyway. It only works on a deep ball when you actually have time to move your finger to the proper button, which will 100% of the time be aggresive catch if you are covered. Don't think I've ever used the run after catch option as it seems the WR does just fine on his own if you lead the pass. The possession catch just means your guy will catch the ball and then fall over for no reason, with no one around him. Good luck throwing to the sideline, so many wonky things happen over there. The only thing that actually seems effective is to throw the ball low or high. Throw low on red zone post route and it's td time every time baby.

Also wanted to add in about the franchise mode. This was great in the beginning. Now that I'm in my tenth year I began to notice that no other team had higher than an 85 in ranking. The player progression is so all over the place. Every team has two 90 plus DEs and no O linemen better than 83. There no new superstar RBs or WRs. You can control this with the edit function but that is such a pain in the butt it's not even worth it. Don't even know if the XP sliders do anything. If you're looking to play the franchise mode for a long time, be prepared for a lot of busy work adjusting the rookies every year. What garbage. I've been duped again by Madden, unbelievable. Game Informer gave this game an 8.5 but patches to the gameplay have ruined this game and the longevity of Franchise mode is crap. Guess it's back to NBA 2k and MLB.

PS. Good god I was just reading another review and they mentioned another totally worthless thing about this game. And that's the Coach cutscenes. Really? After every frickin play we need to watch the Coach? How about some shots of the players or the fans or something? Lol, not a major issue but it just goes to show how blindly adding "features" to the game makes it more annoying than it should be. Watching the same canned animations over and over again is tedious and just makes want to jam on the the x button to skip. Ok rant over.

Disclaimer: I'm not that interested in draft/franchise mode or whatever it's called. I want to play football, not manage a football team. From a gameplay standpoint, the changes to the mechanics in running actual plays are disastrous. The additional run controls are so subtle and have to be so exactly executed as to make them worthless. Worse, if you miss and hit the wrong run influence or your control combination is delayed, you will likely do something much worse, like make the runner stop. The non-speed version of the controls (without trigger held) are almost sure play-killers because they momentarily stop the runner in his tracks. As further proof of this problem, we've gone from having way to many kickoff returns in Madden15 to making it virtually impossible to get a long kickoff return in Madden17. It's simply impossible to get a good enough juke that you can get past more than one player. I've played literally hundreds of games of 17 and haven't seen a single long kickoff return (by myself or my opponents). And what's with the horrible lag on making a QB roll out of the pocket and run? There are times I've held the control down only to watch the QB stubbornly sit in the pocket, or worse, stutter back and forth from starting to run to trying to pass. I saw one post suggesting a trick in which you double tap on the control, holding it down the second time. I have managed to get that to work occasionally to force the QB out of the pocket. Even then, sometimes he will still stop mid-run and cock his arm back to pass. For all practical purposes this ability to QB run just no longer works. It has taken some categories of plays, like many Play Action, out of the playbook entirely. Worse, if you want to play a team like the Panthers or Seahawks where a full out QB run is an option, it's impossible. It has crippled those teams' play. The pass-catching influencing controls were a great idea, but don't seem to work at all. Possession catch seems to be the only one that actually does anything (I've never seen Aggressive Catch work, even with very sure-handed receivers). Similarly, interception defense almost always results in allowing the catch, even with a top-tier cornerback doing it. So disappointing to see such a digression for this franchise. It's all slick glitter and polish and just horribly frustrating gameplay mechanics. Expand

2nd review, it gets worse. I gave it a 1 the first time only to realize later that the game is broken. I just painfully completed my first2nd review, it gets worse. I gave it a 1 the first time only to realize later that the game is broken. I just painfully completed my first season and I was for some stupid reason optimistic about the games offseason mode. Then I got to the draft and the game broke. The draft order went completely crazy and auto picked or traded my draft picks. An entire year of my franchise was totally wasted because EA is to busy counting their money to even test this crap!!!. What is good about the game is a new commentary team and additions to the running game. Bad about the game, soundtrack sucks, player development is pointless because it is so slow, the draft breaks the game. Player ratings are not accurate, during the season unless you scroll through the tabs you have no idea what is going on in the rest of the league. Why can't we see highlights of other games during halftime (like you could with 2k 10 years ago!!!). Between games practice is a huge waste of time. Each week the game acts surprised that you don't want to do it. Why would I want to waste 15 min (6 of which are loading screens) to get an extra 200 xp which is worth NOTHING. I like the idea of improving my players but not if its done in some fee to play Clash of Clans Grind. God I wish there was another option for football but there isn't. Expand
