The gaming landscape has changed a lot since the series heyday, but this title is stuck in a no-man's-land between not being good enough to replicate the past nor ambitious enough to move the franchise forward.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 fails to recapture the magic of the first four games.

Despite the fun character customizations, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 suffers from a number of issues, including laggy multiplayer, dipping frame-rates, and off-putting physics. Sorry, Tony, but nostalgia can’t save you this time.

Robomodo's Activision-mandated update most often challenges players, strangely, not to score big, but stupidly.

This Hawk has had its wings clipped to the point where it resembles an ugly-looking, flightless dodo that deserves its own extinction. [Christmas 2015, p74]

Not one level that I reached in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 felt memorable or made me want to play more. It’s truly a sad day in video game history when a series like this can just become a shadow of its former self.

The addition of MP adds replayability, the core mechanics are there, etc. Yes - it is not Skate so it is arcade-like. But that is what Pro Skater always was. Expand

    A Big Disappointment.

I was so excited for this game, that I went to the bother of pre-ordering it. I have to say it's a big disappointment. I'm not going to rehash what most have written here. (The glitchy game play, dropouts, weird graphics, etc, it's all valid)
What I dislike the most is the lack of customization options. Robomodo completely ruined the "special" feature, it's just a button you press now. And you cannot chose which special moves you want to use. There's no create-a-skater, which IMO was half the fun. (You can change preset designs around, but they are all variations on a few generic designs)
Not a huge deal but I was sad to see that Rodney Mullen was not a part of this game. That being said I can see why he wouldn't want to attach his name or brands to this atrocity. Speaking of Rodney Mullen I was really hoping they were going to bring back flatland tricks...but again, disappointed.
I've previously enjoyed the majority of the music chosen for the series, but unfortunately THPS 5 is a big exception, the soundtrack in the game is god awful, save for about two tracks. Obviously that's a subjective issue, but it would be a nice option to be able to choice music from your own library.
As a loyal THPS fan who's been playing the series since 2000, I really wanted to like this game, but Activision and Robomodo really s*** the bed on this sequel. I haven't lost complete hope yet, maybe some patch updates could fix the frame rate issue, add a real create-a-skater, add flat land trick, the ability to use your own music and and some DLC levels from the previous games (or alternatively make some new ones with missions more relevant to skateboarding!) But I certainly won't be holding my breathe for that to happen anytime soon. If your a big THPS fan I would stay away from this, it might ruin the series for you.

This is only the extreme example of what is being pumped out every month. I can't help but think about endless concourses of talented young men and women slaving away to make these worthless piles excrement for companies that clearly don't know what their customers want -- Instead they make what their customers are willing to tolerate.

Now somebody pass me the brain bleach...

Gameplay is nothing like the games prior in the series. A disgrace to the franchise as a whole. The soundtrack is awful. Nearly impossible to get through some missions. I can go on for an entire day to explain how a $40 game can bring a person's hopes down a **** ton. I can't even play the game without turning off my internet connection on the console, let alone no multiplayer support anymore. There's not even split screen...SPLIT SCREEN! A feature so easy to add in. It's almost like they farted in a room, all stayed in there to baskin in the ambience, decimate on the game disc, held a B-rating skateboarding video game ritual and then called it a day. Humiliating. Expand
