Yes, White Day is an older game, but as far as the horror genre goes, and how it's evolved into something I place little value in, that’s actually a benefit. Given how few people have even known what this game is to date, the extra exposure that it will get from a re-release will mean that, hopefully, a new legion of fans will discover it, because it does deserve that. It’s a masterpiece in building tension and in the way that it plays within the classical approach to horror, without relying on jump scares and endless bloodshed.
This is a good horror game, although its approach isn't going to please everyone. Its balance between new and old survival horror is interesting, so if you like the genre make sure you give this a try.
People forget it's a game first released in 2004 and judge only by the graphics (which are not bad)... this game is fantastic for those who like survival horror game. The amount of details in the school is amazing, for those who know Korean culture they will be stunned by such realism. Game has very interesting puzzle to solve and it can be very scary when you are followed by the guard. Sound design is sort of minimalist but still emphasis perfectly the atmosphere, also the game has such a unique environment i don't recall any horror game played in a school or so. In my opinion, by far one the best survival horror game on console with Outlast and Visages.
White Day: A Labyrinth Named School is a good remake of a decent survival horror. The game structure is quite affected by the consequences of aging. Some terrible game design choices are very easy to spot and weigh heavily on the enjoyment of the game. The aficionados will love it despite its flaws, while the younger generation might not be convinced by such an old school game.
White Day isn’t at the top of its genre, but it’s a solid entry. The real surprise, though, is the effective post-release work that the developers did to fix their game and transform it into something worthwhile after starting it off as a frustrating failure. There are plenty of issues with taking games away from physical media, but examples like this support the concept — the developers didn’t release an unfinished work, they’d just made bad design choices. Luckily, the current nature of gaming gave them a chance to turn a mediocre work into a good one, and they were smart enough to take it.
White Day has plenty of problems though it’s easy to see why some may see it as a cult hit and why its creators wanted a revival. It’s a clunky, vague, and often frustrating game yet, at the same time, there’s this great setting and some clever puzzles at work. It’s just a shame that, in order to get to the good stuff, you’re almost guaranteed to face some hardship.
The atmosphere is tense - INSANE. It's awesome. The upgraded visuals and mechanics work and the scares are still genuine. The constant chase of the janitor is crazy tough, but you're rewarded for your progress and perseverance. I'd recommend this to all horror fans.
Yee boii.
Do I recommend this game? Yes... And no... This game is an odd duck and while I can't say it's a bad game, I can say it's definitely not for everyone. I felt like this game seemed to be suffering from a little bit of an identity crisis in as in to whether it wanted to be a straight forward horror or a b-horror comedy. I don't know if it is from my lack of knowledge with Korean horror culture but that's the impression I got. I also didn't know going in that this game was in fact a remake and usually I’d be a bit more cricitcal when reviewing a game. That being said even though I have never played the original, I will judge it on it on its own merits and if I ever play the original, I will re-vise this if I feel there is anything more to say.
The Pros
A fairly unique story, nothing life altering but interesting enough.
There's plenty of replay-ability with the 10 different endings as well as different or entirely new cutscenes that can be seen depending on your choices when speaking to the girls
Unlockable costumes for the cast as well as an all new character introduced after getting one of three specifics endings required to unlock her
The Cons
The ghosts feel very much like they're in the background until act 3. Outside of the small few you encounter that are required to progress the story, you will need to look up a guide on how to trigger your encounter with all 20 of them.
Some of the cut scenes that are locked behind certain routes that feel like they could've easily been available in all of them to provide more context of the plot without giving away too much of what's going on
The puzzles are not as mind bending as the store page claims, most are very straight forward. In fact if you're playing on anything lower than normal, the game basically outright tells you where to go and how to solve the ones that are keeping you from progressing the story. However there are a small couple you will need a guide for, not because the puzzle is necessarily difficult but because you either you aren't given any real information about them, by the time you've gotten all the pieces you've completely forgotten about it or you simply aren't even aware of their existence.
The Janitors, not because they're difficult to deal with just annoying and not very threatening. You can easily run around them and if you're having trouble losing them, just hide in a bathroom stall and they'll immediately lose you and go away. This can be done on any difficulty
The difficulty curve. There doesn't feel like there's much of a difference between very easy and easy as well as between normal and hard. If you play this for the first time, I honestly recommend just playing it on hard since then you will have a chance to encounter all the ghosts.
Sound can be serviceable, however buggy. There were times when i'd just be walking around and the title theme will just randomly start playing.
Game can be a completionist's nightmare since one of the unlockable costumes requires you to acquire all 10 endings on each level of difficulty. While I do think there is a good amount of replay-ability, I don't think there is enough to warrant roughly 50 play throughs.
You will need to look at a guide to figure out how to interact with the new girl after you unlock her.
As I said at the beginning of my review, I do recommend this but only if you're able to over look its flaws and go in with the mindset of it's not entirely sure if it's a horror game or not. I also feel that even though I’ve never played the original, there still feels like there is quite a bit of untapped potential that was missed out on her. That being said I give this game 2 baseball bat wielding ass kicking janitors out of 5.
The console versions are a port of a mobile version that came out on android. Yes, this was originally a mobile game. It was later ported to iOS. And 2 years later it was ported to the PS4 and PC.
Anyway, the developers of the console and PC versions did a sloppy job adapting the game for those platforms. Its an unpolished mess ****.
For starters, the AI (artificial intelligence) that controls the janitors is really bad on consoles. It's practically broken.
Unlike happens on the mobile version, on consoles the Janitors are so incredibly stupid that they will often get stuck on a door or even on a wall.
Now those bugs and glitches might sound like they're a good thing to happen, right? Since they may allow the player to explore the area without having to worry about those baddies. But not so fast. Because the lousy AI that controls the janitors can (and will) also work against you.
For instance, even if you're being careful to remain undetected. And walk around in a crouching position. The AI from the game will often send the janitors to your precise location for no good reason at all. Leaving you to worder what in the world did you do wrong.
You could be literally standing inside a room doing nothing. Just quietly reading a file that you just found. And suddenly the door slams open and a janitor (who came from a different floor from the one you're currently on) will start chasing you. Why? Who knows! LOL You didn't do a damn thing to trigger the janitor. BUT that's how the lousy AI for those enemies rolls on consoles.
None of that happens on the mobile version, BTW. On that version, the janitors will only ever respond to your actions if you give them a very good and logical reason to do so.
Niw, another thing that the developers failed to adapt properly was the detection boxes of the items that you can pick up or interact with.
On mobile devices, you work with a touch screen. So its easy to navigate the cursor towards a small circle that represents a detection box on a specific object to interact with it.
But on consoles, you would think that the developers would've increased the size of the detection boxes so that they now cover the entire object that you want to interact with. But nope. The devs decided not to adapt that system to consoles properly. And left it as it worked on the mobiles version. Which is bad. Really bad.
Because let's say that you have to pick up a large object like the audio speakers that are inside the dance room. It isn't enough to have to drag the cursor to where the speaker is to lift it up. No. In order to actually pick it up, you need to keep dragging that cursor so that its fully inside a small circle that appears over the speaker. That small circle represents the detection box that said object is equipped with. Which is a problem during that specific scenario. Because it happens during a boss fight. And you have to be extremely quick to pick up 2 speakers and position them in their designated spots. And let me tell you, trying to move an almost invisible cursor the size **** of sand to position itself inside a small circle the size **** ball is frustrating as hell! LOL
Anyway, the console versions lack polish. None of the new content (costumes or new character) makes up for the fact that it wasn't properly adapted to the PS4, Switch or PC.
I suggest that you get the game on mobile. And play it there for the best experience.
Unlike the original 2001 version, in which each sound in the game causes a sense of fear, the remake version has a flat and unnatural sound effect, which is a shame.
