More than just a Soulslike with a protagonist to serve as eye-candy, Stellar Blade has far surpassed our expectations, offering varied gameplay, outstanding visuals, a sublime soundtrack and an engaging story. It's a must-play for action game fans.
Stellar Blade recalls the classic era of character-action games in truly inspired fashion. It might struggle to deliver on its core narrative, and its platforming is often more frustrating than it isn't, but neither of those things are enough to bring down a thoroughly enjoyable action experience. It wears its inspirations on its sleeve, but manages to build on them in engaging fashion with a deliciously layered combat system and gorgeous presentation to boot.
Stellar Blade bursts out of the gate looking stunning, full of jaw-dropping set pieces, intense action and gory violence, and maintains that pace throughout. Underneath this flashy action game are a lot of systems that we’ve seen before, but despite what can feel like a lack of innovation at times, it never feels stale or unenticing due to its overwhelming sense of style and polished, gratifying combat. For every familiar puzzle or annoying platforming section, there’s a brutal boss battle or incredible over-the-top sequence that pulled me back in. Stellar Blade is a joy, a deliciously crafted adventure jam-packed with dramatic thrills.
Stellar Blade is collage filtered through kaleidoscope, its myriad influences bleeding together in a neon swirl that produces vibrant new colours and dull familiar ones at an uneven pace. When it chooses to use its building blocks to reach new heights it’s a dizzying achievement in combat presentation and approachability, with EVE’s toolset fun and varied enough to carry the weight of the game’s lesser components. It leaves you wanting to see what else this studio could accomplish, even if they’ve gotten this far on borrowed wings.
Stellar Blade has landed a critical hit, successfully slicing through the crowd of well-established action-adventure game giants. If you’re a fan of sleek and stylish combat, with sprinklings of Soulsborne and Nier Automata vibes, you’ll feel right at home when playing Shift Up’s triumphant console debut.
Stellar Blade is at war with itself in a conflict between style and substance. Sadly, style wins with merciless regularity, but there’s a strong core of genuinely good gameplay fighting through an ocean of bells and whistles.
Overall a good game, but it falls quite short. There wasn't anything special about this game other than the gameplay and the music. The game does a great job with a variety of moves built into the system, making it feel very satisfying to parry/stun/burst enemies. The best part of the game are the boss fights. The music is pretty decent but it's also very repetitive. In certain situations, the music seems to not match the situation at all.
It's disappointing how dry and somewhat poorly written the characters are, how dry the story was, how it was a bit bland to explore the world, how poor the platforming is in this game, etc.
Although this game is ok, it is unfortunately a forgettable experience that feels like it's a game from the 2000s, but perhaps not as good from that time. The user score is definitely filled with bias due to controversy with journalism, and unfortunately, this game is only just ok and does not go over an 8 and I'd recommend waiting for the game to be on sale. $70 is too steep.
Visually it looks great for the most part. It has some of the typical "quirks" you'll find in Asian games. The background characters appearing side missions for example do not have proper lip synched dialogue. If they have a proper mouth (even behind a mask) you can see some movement but it doesn't fit the words spoken. It's done properly for the main cast though.
Gameplay is fine for the most part. Combat has lots of options and things you can try out. The fights against enemies are mostly fair but towards the end there are some serious difficulty spikes that can be quite frustrating.
Biggest problem in Stellar Blade is the story. It's good that they aren't overloading the game with tons of video sequences and focus on delivering dialogue during gameplay. The story told in those sections is rather "meh" though. There are plot holes and contradictions. Some aspects are not addressed at all. I could never really get invested in any of the characters because quite honestly outside of their beautiful visual design they are quite bland. They aren't unlikable which is usually a good thing. But they also do not exactly stand out in a positive way where I'd relate to the character. Part of it might be a lack of good back stories and that they're lacking proper personality traits.
It's a fun game for a single playthrough but I'm not sure if or when I will ever play the game again.
I spent 7 hours playing this game and I have a lot of the same feelings I had about Final Fantasy 16 with Stellar Blade. I enjoy the sexiness just as much as the next man but at the end of the day I still expect to play a good game with an interesting story when I play a big Triple A Sony exclusive and this game just doesn't hit for me. One of the biggest gripes I have with this game is the overall depressing vibe to it. The music constantly playing in the background has this super anime, sad and funeral like vibe to it, that just puts me in a state of mind where I feel depressed. Add on to that, the overall look and color schemes of the game and it has that dark and dead colored tint to the environment that makes things even more depressing. Aside from that, the dialogue and story are god awful. I'm 7 hours in and I'm still having a hard time understanding what the hell we are even doing. The English voice actors are terrible. Main character, Eve, outside of her looks is just completely flat and uninteresting, very robotic and flat. Combat is the only part of the game that is some what decent but it still has major problems. Feels way too janky and sometimes it feels like this combat system is not made for the enemy hordes and attacks you run into. Way too reliant on building meter and the way she walks like a snail and the run button not working at times is infuriating in combat. 5/10 game for me - Flushed after 7 hours unfortunately.
