I'd recommend Calico to anybody, but especially fans of cats, cafes, or anything in that same realm of interest. Bringing the year to a close with an adorable blanket of furry animals to wear, carry, and ride around while living your best life is certainly the way to go. Just be sure to update to the latest version when you can.
The game does deliver what it promises: magic girls, animals, cute furniture, a relaxed pace, and the chance to bend the rules with magic and ride a giant cat. However, it also has some glitches, a few quirks in its gameplay, and some slightly iffy controls. How much you get out of Calico will truly depend on how much you love its themes as well as your tolerance for glitches. It will also matter if you were looking for a game that lets you actually run a café, since this aspect of gameplay is surprisingly passive.
Super cute game! Haven't put it down except for work. Definitely has a few bugs that news to be worked through, but amazing and fun, can't wait to see it grow
While Calico‘s current state is vastly improved from its initial release thanks to these patches, its initial launch state can’t just be swept under the rug. But the continued effort to improve the game, combined with its welcoming, comforting, and charming nature shining through these unpleasant mats of fur, makes it clear that Peachy Keen Games is a developer with a lot of potential — and I can’t wait to see what they can do in the future with more experience.
Calico prides itself on being a game that ‘makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside’, and of that, it succeeds. Unfortunately, it’s currently let down by a lot of strange bugs and awkward controls.
Combining cats and other likeable creatures with a café should be a winning formula, but unfortunately Calico fails to offer an enjoyable time. Cute graphics and inventive concepts alone do not excuse the multitude of issues that give the game a feel of a draft version, rather than a finished product despite post-launch updates. Perhaps one day running a cat café will run like a dream, instead of a cute-themed nightmare.
What sounded like the combination of a management game, Animal Crossing, and The Sims turned out to be barely influenced by all three. If you’re looking for a relaxing Switch game where you can collect clothing, decorate your home, and hang out with animals, there is already the perfect game for you: Animal Crossing New Horizons. If you’ve already played it to the point of needing new joysticks, then there are plenty of other indie alternatives to pick up before giving Calico consideration.
Peachy Keen Games worked over time to patch this game, and the hard work's paid off. With v 1.4, Calico runs smoother with less bugs and corrected controls. At the end of the day, Calico proves itself to be a warm slice of wholesome content. Light, breezy, and cute as a button, this is a game that is very refreshing, now more than ever.
So firstly, there was a big update to fix bugs in late 2022 I believe, and the gave is now perfectly playable. That being said, Its still a bit janky, what you'd expect from a low budget game built in unity. But I like it. I the character generator seems designed basically to make girls who I am attracted to. You can make curvy, and chubby body types, and they all look hot. It's also got lots of cute animals, and you can glide around with a raven on your head. It's also just bizarre a lot of the time, and not really like other games. Definitely worth it on sale.
This game is cute, and it is clunky. If you're looking for a management sim, this isn't it. Calico is a game where you can decorate a cat cafe and fulfill requests for townsfolk. They character designs are adorable, the world is vibrantly colored (though sometimes a little too saturated in my own personal tastes), and it's pretty easy to control. There are graphical glitches, and character collision is weird. Animals flop around in ways that look painful sometimes. I had a glitch where an animal I needed to pick up and take somewhere for a side quest just didn't let me interact with it after I tried to assign it to my party. This was fixed by turning it off and back on again, but it's a picture of the kind of thing you can expect. In addition, some quests will accept work you've already done but most want you to work on the quest only after it is asked of you even if you intuited what needed to be done. Also, sometimes it's pretty unclear what you're supposed to do next. All this being said, it's still adorable. That is its main selling point, if you need something simple and easy without strife more complex or stressful than "I'm a catgirl now and I don't like water anymore, but my friend still wants me to come swimming!" then this game might be a good distraction.
Really cute concept but the game just doesn't feel polished. I really like the designs for the world and characters, and the graphics are ok, but the physics & controls feel awkward and clunky. If you make the wrong move you might get stuck somewhere and have to reload a save. At one point in the game you enter a little cutscene and the credits roll— after the credits were over it dumped me in the ocean with no way back up onto land. The cliffs are too steep to climb and it won't let me swim close enough to the beach. In addition, the controls are confusing to me. I think an option to switch the functions of A and B would be helpful. And in your journal, it would be helpful to have pictures or illustrations of the actual individual animals, rather than just their species. I really don't want to diss a cute indie game, because I can feel the love and hard work put into it, but from a gameplay perspective it needs some work.
I can't believe I spent my Christmas money on this game. The creators didn't even take the time to change the controls for the switch. So I can't even play without constantly pressing A instead of B. I put up with it. But when I just lost 4 hours worth of progress because the game froze and didn't let me save... I wish I could get a refund. It still needs so much work before it can be considered a good game. But I do not plan on making that progress again, or picking it up again. :') I really wanted to like it. I really did.
