Uncover the chilling mysteries of this RPG-investigation game, descending deep into a world of cosmic horrors, creeping madness, and shrouded Old Gods within Lovecraft's iconic universe.

The Cthulhu Mythos has been fascinating audiences for generations, growing to become one of the largest shared universes ever envisioned and giving birth to countless stories, novels, movies, tabletop and videogames since the original publication of H.P. Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu. Adaptions and references have formed a widespread legacy stretching back to the very beginning of the 20th century, latching on to the key fear of the human psyche: that of the unknown. Now, Call of Cthulhu will bring the mythos to life like never before, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

In this world, nothing is as it seems. Sanity is an irregular bedfellow, all too often replaced by the whisperings in the dark. Strange creatures, weird science, and shadowy cults dominate the Cthulhu Mythos, intent on realizing their mad schemes to bring about the end of everything. Your mind will suffer -- balancing a razor-thin line between sanity and madness, your senses will be disrupted until you question the reality of everything around you. Trust no one. Creeping shadows hide lurking figures... and all the while, the Great Dreamer prepares for his awakening.

What it does have in spades is the Lovecraft mythos, and it does it very well.

If you are a fan of Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos, The Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game (apparently its full title) will hold some appeal to you. While familiarity with the source material is not required, it probably helps, but I can safely recommend this game to any fan of the cosmic horror genre. There are some rough edges, sure, but it’s well worth the journey overall, especially around this time of year.

Call of Cthulhu is back on Nintendo Switch, with a very good porting: get ready for an adventure inspired by the tales of Lovecraft.

This Focus Home Interactive game clearly offers an interesting approach to the Lovecraft story. The title creates a quite remarkable atmosphere, but fails to implement the mechanics correctly and accidentally ends up being more a walking simulator than a narrative adventure game. The video game is not bad and could be brilliant, but the study needs to improve the gameplay.

The title is the same as it was a year ago (eternal uploads included, unfortunately): considering that the starting material, from a technical point of view, was certainly not a miracle, one could almost say that the game is more at ease on the hybrid Nintendo.

Call of Cthulhu brings to the Nintendo Switch the horror and madness of the game developed by Cyanide a Studio, with a great port that maintains all the ups and downs of the original launch.

Call of Cthulhu on Switch is still a decent game, with plenty of atmosphere and an intriguing story, even if its execution is lacking.

The negative reviews turned me off but I’m glad I listened to my gut and bought it anyway. The game is not an action horror or survival horror, but a detective horror RPG. Your stats will determine what your results are and from what I can gather, the computer will roll against your stats much like a tabletop RPG. I’ve had different results from reloading with the exact same stats, though auto saves will often happen after you roll to prevent reload spamming. The atmosphere is what this game is all about and it absolutely nails it in this regard. It has been criticised for being boring at the start though I couldn’t disagree more. This game had me hooked from the word go, despite some wooden dialogue. Is the game flawless? No. It does however, capture the essence of HP Lovecraft’s work. So for those actually familiar with his work, and not CLAIMING to be familiar in order to lend credibility to their negative response to this fantastic game, you will not be unhappy with your experience. Unsettling, dark, mysterious, it’s Lovecraft at its best and now portable! A good port of a very atmospheric and scary game.

Now what I don't like about it is that this genre is usually fairly experimental and brings new things to the table and this title is lacking in comparison. It is also not great as an adventure game. If you are looking for a mainstream title with good graphics (rare in the genre) and are into Lovecraftian tales you might enjoy this a lot more than me. Expand

There are things to like, such as the atmosphere and fairly competent voice acting. But the sneaking sections of this game are simply too badly done. I eventually gave up when I got to a boss fight where you have to clunkily sneak around and grab a dagger in order to defeat the boss – only there are multiple daggers, grabbing any one of them alerts the boss, and there is no way of knowing which one is the right one. I can live with some rough edges, but I have zero patience for a game that is simply badly designed and doesn’t respect my time. Expand

The initial selling point, being the story I could not experience it in full, as the game (not sure if the port, or the game itself) seems to be rather broken, failing to load levels appropriately and having me to restart my switch numerous times, just to find myself in the same position.
The visuals, as noted by many others, are lacluster. The difference in quality between cutscenes and actual gameplay is borderline depressing. This game does not deserve to have such a high price-tag in 2019.

The sound is appaling. The sound designers managed to fail astonishingly, deliving distorted dialogue, lack of foley and enviromental effects.

It is a shame that the designers of this product failed, on what seemed to be a promissing and unique addition to video game uniquity.
