Thoroughbred RPG in which you fight by exercising and which forces you to train regularly. Great idea and realization. [Issue#301]

Fitness games are often judged on whether they make you forget you are exercising, but if you forget, you’re probably doing it wrong. What Ring Fit Adventure succeeds in, is making that exercise consistently enjoyable yet still effective.

Ring Fit Adventure builds on the legacy of Wii Fit in important ways, not only pushing the limits of what a workout game can be but also repositioning its message around fitness in a much healthier and constructive way. Fitness isn't a steady, consistent journey for most people; it's full of tiny improvements and setbacks and obstacles that get in your way, much like one's progress in an RPG. Because of this, Ring Fit Adventure works perfectly both as a concept and in practice. The sheer volume of content along with new abilities, items, and difficulty levels keeps progression interesting through the entire campaign and beyond. With consistently engaging gameplay, gorgeous landscapes, and a relentlessly positive attitude, Ring Fit Adventure has set a new standard for fitness games, and I look forward to another year of growing stronger with it--and eventually beating that absurdly buff dragon.

Ring Fit Adventure is a fun way to regain the shape. It’s colourful, it has a lot of exercises and the Joy-Cons work flawlessly. It’s perfect for the novice, but it can't be bringed it on the upper level, without a trainer that shapes our fitness program and an integration with the main fitness apps.

Ring Fit Adventure is the perfect gamification of exercise, but above all, it offers a fun experience.

I also really appreciated the fact that there’s a mini-games menu outside of the main quest which offers a more Wii Fit-like experience, allowing you to hand the Ring Con to friends test your skills against them.

The core mission of Ring Fit Adventure is to make you forget that you’re exercising, and I think it’s only partially successful at that.

I call it fit-soul, where you improve yourself from repeated actions, react faster when butt naked, and unforgiving when you screw up. It is hard, and the rightful spiritual successor to the dark soul series with a rich and deep lore based on bodybuilding. By far, this game is the hardest soul-clone I encountered, and just for reference I never encountered any real challenges with the soul series and its clones. I'm a quick learner with pro-gamer reaction time who can beat 90% of the bosses and mobs in one or two tries, but not fit-soul. Fit-soul broke me, it destroyed my self-esteem and body just like a good soul game should have done.

His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There's vomit on his sweater already, chick fil a patties
He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready
To drop fists, but he’s glass keep on foggin'
What exercise he marked down, the whole crowd goes so loud
He raises his ring, but his deltoid won't push out
He's chokin', how, everybody's jokin' now
The clocks run out, times up, over, blaow!
Snap back to reality, oh there goes gravity...

After the first session I was sweating like crazy and heaving. I have since lowered the difficulty and I am having far more fun and still getting a good work out, but anybody who is afraid that they won't be challenged, has nothing to worry about. I'm a relatively active 21 year old to put that into perspective.

The exercise aspect is amazing, it is very conscious of promoting healthy exercise habits for the long term. The only thing barring it from a 10 is that it isn't a gaming masterpiece, this isn't ocarina of time with a ring-con, it is a standard/generic RPG which serves to distract you from the fact you are doing exercise, and it serves that purpose perfectly. Completely recommend it to anyone who feels they need an injection of fitness into their lifestyle.

I hope they do a few gimmicky things like they did with Labo and let you use the ring-con as a Mario-kart wheel, or a bow in Zelda, but the price is right as is. Happy adventuring!
