Riptide GP: Renegade is a genuine improvement upon the already excellent Riptide GP2 in a number of areas, therefore if you are a fan of arcade or water based racing games such as Hydro Thunder and most certainly if you appreciate split-screen or online multiplayer racing, then Riptide GP: Renegade is absolutely a highly recommended game.
With an overwhelming amount of content available, and a variety of game modes to play through, Vector Unit Inc. should be proud of this arcade racing game.
Riptide GP: Renegade is a huge step up from Riptide GP2. It is way more noob friendly, yet still not too easy. Every great aspect of riptide GP2 is still there and they managed to improve on all of them. It's especially fun if you can play the splitscreen mode with up to 3 others. The game manges to make the speed of your hydrojet feel extremely satisfying. Overall I would say that Riptide GP Renegade is definitely one of the best racing games I've played in the last couple of years.
Riptide GP: Renegade takes the series to a whole new level! Cops and hidden shortcuts make the game a lot more intense and at the same time keeping the excitement with awesome tricks ! Renegade is a must have !
It's not perfect, but it's all we can ask from this type of game, considering its price. If you miss this particular kind of races, it's a good choice.
It has visually interesting tricks and stunts, but that’s about as close as it gets to being a good arcade racer. Only a select few of the maps were interesting and the gameplay was frustrating at the best of times.
It is an good but not excellent racer. Much better than the first PS4 game but it is still a phone port and suffers from problems of it being designed for an iPad. This is not Hydrothunder that you are probably looking for but it is a fun easy good time if you aren't expecting that much.
I'm getting increasingly fond of developer Vector Unit, having first encountered their work with "Hydro Thunder Hurricane" on the Xbox 360. They understood what made the original "Hydro Thunder" fun, and clearly loved it as much as I did. Their first two PS4 games ("Beach Buggy Racing" and "Riptide GP2") were both well-made, if a little "lite" and lacking in personality, but they were both ports of mobile phone games. So, when I heard they were releasing a new Riptide GP game on PS4 and Steam - and this time it was going to be designed for PC / PS4 first (with phone ports to follow) I sat up and paid attention.
While I would've preferred a new "Hydro Thunder", this is a very decent alternative and it very deliberately moves the jet-ski-based Riptide games closer toward Hydro Thunder territory. The course design strongly echoes the Hydro Thunder games, with huge jumps and some crazy course-specific mayhem going on. On the technical front it's very strong too, with nice wave physics and a commitment to a rock-solid 60fps.
Online racing is included, as is split-screen local mulltiplayer for up to 4 players. Whether it can maintain 60fps in 4-player split-screen, I don't know - haven't had a chance to try it yet - but it's great that the game caters for 4-up couch-gaming with friends, something that many devs don't bother with anymore, which is a shame.
What I'm less fond of is the mechanic of doing stunts to gain boost, and the way pressing the boost button expends all of your stored boost in one go - you basically boost until it's all gone. It's a personal-taste thing, but I prefer Hydro Thunder's system of picking up boosts and the way that game allows you to use up your boost bar more strategically, all at once or in shorter bursts at optimum moments. I was also a bit worried when I saw the game's main campaign mode was a "story mode" (I hate story modes in racing games) but luckily it's fine: brief and unobtrusive.
Overall, this is very decent game that does exactly what it sets out to do - it's the closest thing to a new Hydro Thunder on current systems, and it's well-made. The only thing you can really say against it is that it still feels slightly "low-ambition" - i.e. it's good but not great, it's nice but it won't change your world, it's a lot like Hydro Thunder but not quite as awesome as Hydro Thunder, etc. You get the idea! But it also only costs about a tenner (£9-something on a launch promo, £11-something thereafter) so as long as you adjust your expectations accordingly you will be well-pleased.
A great game destroyed by overly aggressive and cheating AI. I was really enjoying this well crafted water racer for the first hour or so. Then I started to notice the unfair difficulty. I was boosting max speed towards the finish line (with a fully upgraded craft) and the the AI shot past me for first place as if I was standing still. You can run a perfect race and still struggle to get the 3rd place needed for progression. People have complained about the difficulty and the developers patched an "easy" (read "normal") mode for PC and Xbox versions. Not so with the PS4 version. You are stuck with the irritatingly aggressive AI. I love the 9 detailed tracks in this game. The physics are great. The design is top notch. It would be one of my favorite racers if the $%&** AI would settle down. It seriously ruined the game for me. I am no racing game novice, but there is no way I am repeating these races 20x times to get lucky enough to get 1st place. And the whole stunt to boost system is overly complicated and cumbersome. We don't get many arcade racers anymore, so it saddens me to see this game ruined. Wish the developers would bring the easy mode over to the PS4.
There is a lot of potential here but it's all destroyed by the frustrating gameplay. Winning is just a question of luck. The rubber band ki overtakes you in the last corner of a perfect race, the police is only hunting you, one bail and you already lost. So you're just grinding for upgrades all the time and still then it's just luck to win the later races. good idea, cheap gameplay, ugly graphics - don't buy this crap. If you want good arcade fun stick to trackmania!
Game idea and environment aren't too bad. But the ridiculous programmed AI that is capable of beating you even after doing a perfect race makes this extremly frustrating. One of the worst games I've ever seen
SummaryEnter a future with illicit hydrojet racing, where armored riders kick out death-defying stunts over massive waterfalls, dodge cops through public waterways, and boost at breakneck speeds across surging waves.
