So good to see Night Dive Studios revive this classic and make it purchasable and playable again. If you've ever uttered the words 'cyberpunk' or like games that have the word 'shock' or "Deus Ex" in them, give this one an honest try -- it may not look the part in screenshots, but it's a legend.
If you can look at it through the lens of when it was created and get past the control scheme, you will find a satisfying experience and show younger gamers why System Shock was so influential to the gaming community.
System Shock Enhanced Edition is clunky, confusing and still absolutely brilliant. Night Dive has done impressive work to make this game playable on modern hardware, but the game still has a steep learning curve. A complicated and chilling experience await those who dare to enter System Shock.
If you haven’t played System Shock before, there’s never been a better time. Whether you’re into shooters or RPGs; or just want to experience a cyberpunk romp with a good beat, this one is for you.
It is still a classic, and one that planted some incredibly important seeds for the fps genre as a whole. This enhanced edition brings all that back and adds a little more, but unfortunately the control system hasn’t aged well.
If you loved the original and want to go back some scifi horror nostalgia then i highly recommend you get the enhanced version as the changes are aesthetic and don’t take away from the game you loved as a kid.
System Shock is an atmospheric shooter with light adventure elements. Without spoiling anything, you are a hacker trying to overcome Shodan’s plans, the enemy AI who has taken control of the space station Citadel. System Shock may be the first FPS which tried to blend in story elements with shooter mechanics and it is hard to ignore its importance in the evolution of FPSs, considering it came out 4 years before the original Half-Life.
Whereas System Shock still holds up in some areas (story, atmosphere), it shows its age in others… Shooting is pretty bad and the AI is quite poor. Throughout the game, I have killed many enemies, because they were stuck in a doorway, unable to find their way towards me. The UI is very different from today’s standardized UIs and often criticized, but I honestly enjoyed its sophistication. My main problem with System Shock was the maze-like level design and backtracking. I often found myself trying to figure out how to progress, finding out later that I am supposed go back to a small room five levels (floors) earlier. Hacking mini-games are alright and the inventory management is fun.
Overall, System Shock was too ambitious for its technical limitations in 1994. It definitely deserves respect for what it was trying to do, but if I had to name one game that desperately needs a remake it would be the original System Shock. Thanks to Nightdive Studios, I guess we will get our hands on that out soon…
It's a wonderful game, but I can't get past the dated controls. The graphics are more dizzying than Descent I. You have to toggle between free look and movement. It needs a full remake instead just a partial update to be playable.
