This interesting free-to-play shooter set on an intriguing alien planet
can be immensely satisfying or (more often) painfully frustrating
depending on how you fare and how well you manage your equipment and
finances in the face of losing everything you’re carrying upon death.
The Cycle: Frontier is a game that has a great foundation for the future. The PvPvE shooter shows no mercy. Other players will try to steal your loot and the only thing you can do is either run away and hopefully lose them or fight back and kill them before they kill you. The feeling when extracting after a tough run is phenomenal. A recommendation for anyone who’s looking for a free PvPvE shooter. However, the game also has still a couple of issues, which need to be fixed.
This game was the best PvPvE extraction shooter I have played in the last 25 years. It checked all the boxes I expect from a game, albeit a difficult game requiring some dedication.
First and foremost, it featured an excellent level design, with lots of variety and depth (despite only three maps).
Secondly, the fantastic audio atmosphere also greatly contributed to the tension. You had a total immersion with flora, fauna, mobs, weather, interaction sounds. Every sound seemed carefully crafted and fit the purpose.
Finally, definitely a gorgeous lighting, with weather changes over great derelict sci-fi extra-terrestrial environment.
One could play solo, in duo or trio squads.
As a PvPvE game, one could decide to go full blast PvP, or rather sneaky and focus on Quests (some were grindy, some were exploratory, some forced you to go PvP).
The weapons felt very very good. Simple enough to not worry about extreme customisation, but with enough variations and specificities that you could realy find the ones that suit your gameplay. And best of all, you could immediatly identify them based on their in-game sound, which was great to evaluate risks of going PvP. Again, props to the first class sound design!
The extraction mechanism was fun. The events were creative (Laser Drill, Storm, Oil Pumps, Dungeon, Forge...).
Really, I can't stress enough how this game filled a void in the general gamescape, and is sorely missed by a core of avid players.
I spent more than 2200 hours on it and was not bored nor ready to see it disappear. A real shame.
With over 600 hours on the game. I consider this game as one of the best PVPVE with extraction on the market. It is completely underrated and deserves to be much more known.
Strengths: - the sound design is absolutely excellent. One of the best sound design on FPS.
- The gameplay is very good and so is the atmosphere of the game. There is really a challenge and a difficulty that you feel.
- The game is demanding and requires you to relearn the basics of FPS, it's a big change from what we're used to seeing now.
- The developers are listening to the community and doing a great job.
- The shooting sensation is enjoyable and the fights are really tactical and immersive. You can do well with a good AIM, or by using your brain to deceive the enemy.
- The activation of the voice in localized gives incredible situations in the game.
Weaknesses: - The quests are a bit repetitive.
- The game is sometimes frustrating (like all extraction games). You have to get used to it and learn to play better.
- The updates have an annoying tendency to break the game every time.
Otherwise, it is an excellent game that has nothing to envy to an EFT or a hunt showdown.

There’s a great game somewhere inside The Cycle, and lush world design, clever environmental layout, and solid gun feel all point towards it. Unfortunately, it’s all rendered into tedious, cynical nonsense by a mobile-game style approach to progression and monetisation, and a thin, repetitive core loop.
The Cycle: Frontier is a game with big potential which has gone to the wrong direction.
I haven't really seen any improvements and less and less people play it everyday.
SummaryThe Cycle: Frontier is a free-to-play PvPvE Extraction Shooter driven by suspense and danger. Prospect for resources and other riches on an abandoned alien world ravaged by a deadly storm, inhabited by monsters, and frequently raided by other ambitious Prospectors.
