Theseus is a very entertaining and interesting VR game. The use of the third-person perspective in VR elevates the game and creates a fulfilling and unique experience. While the combat can be lackluster and constant camera changes feel unnecessary and bothersome, the narrative holds it together and makes Theseus better than many other PSVR titles.
A new way to play platform games. I'd much rather playing a game like this than tomb raider. The immersion and the controls are well worth the effort. I am thoroughly impressed! This is the first one like this... I'm looking forward to future iterations of this type.
After experiencing this for myself I'm surprised at the low ratings from others.
It might be short and the gameplay is simple, but what's here is incredibly well executed and visually impressive. The concept and atmosphere are incredible and it's a great example of how well 3rd person games can work in VR. You'll most likely play through the game more than once to get the true ending, and for its low price it's worth playing for the narrative and experience alone.
I honestly believe a video game where you play as the eagle that eats Prometheus’ liver would be more exciting than Theseus. Everything about Forge Reply’s game is superficial. It’s pretty to look at, but the gameplay is terribly hollow and lacks variety. Adding to that, it fails to do anything meaningful with VR, using it only to create tension through a series of fixed camera angles whose transition are jarring and disorienting. It pains me to say that this is one game that should have been sacrificed to Hades.
Theseus hides some good ideas, but boring and repetitive gameplay, along with an outdated technology and a questionable use of the PS VR, prevent it from being a good game.
There’s a lot of potential to really have Theseus be a great adventure, but it ends before you can get invested at all, a slow burn with an all too rapid conclusion. It feels like the whole middle part of the game is missing, with a long intro leading right into the climax.
Ariadne wouldn’t fall in love with Theseus in this state, but Forge Reply’s virtual reality adaptation of a classic story isn’t an unmitigated disaster. The combat and platforming disappoints and there’s not enough meat on the release’s bones, but it proves that third-person adventures can work with PlayStation VR – and it looks pretty nice to boot. It’s a bit of a missed opportunity, then, as there is value in what’s presented here – it’s just far, far too expensive to recommend and isn’t as fun as it should be to play.
Some reviews remind me of that joke Woody Allen tells (in Annie Hall, I believe) about the old women who go to a restaurant, complain about how bad the food is, then say "And such small portions".
Bought this real cheap, I had some good time with it.
Pros:
+ good presentation and atmosphere, that is taken to another level in VR
+ mix of walking, platforming, combat and some puzzles
+ controls are ok most of the time
+ cheap
Cons:
- short
- weak replay value
- lackluster combat
Theseus is a third person adventure action VR game. You control the player character from a third person view almost like looking through a window into the game world. A cool concept but the camera perspective can be a pain at times.
I agree with some of the reviews about this being a missed opportunity. A GOW style game could work well in vr but this feels bargain basement and even though it is supposedly short I wasn't compelled to finish it. Graphics are just ok and environments/enemies need to be more interesting than this.
SummaryTheseus is an immersive VR experience that offers a new take on the myth of the Minotaur. Enjoy a mix of exploration, story, and combat, with a strong cinematic feel. Do you have what it takes to unveil the truth that lies at the heart of the Labyrinth?
