I really enjoyed unraveling the mystery that is The Forgotten City. The setting is beautifully displayed graphically but the real cherry on the top is the narrative itself. Talking to all of the characters, and figuring out the order in which to do things ala Groundhog Day is one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll have this year. Even those fans of the old mod will find a fresh experience here, as the development team has expanded and even changed things from the original. I really can’t recommend this game enough, even with the lackluster facial animations this is an experience that shouldn’t be missed if you value narrative; in particular mysteries.

As far as time loop games go, The Forgotten City has the Midas touch. It’s easy to see just how much care has gone into the story of the game so that it not only pulls the player in, but dares them to test the possible realities. The characters all feel real and they drive the player to find the truth before the Golden Rule is broken and the loop must reset. The developers have been careful to create a narrative that, while repetitive in practice, still keeps the player engaged in the wider narrative of the world through exploration and discovery. Combat in the game remains questionable, but the gold bow is its saving grace. If you’re after a game that will keep you guessing as you move closer to the truth, then The Forgotten City is fittingly worthy of your gold.

The Forgotten City is a game that many will thoroughly enjoy. It's got a great story at its centre and keeps delivering a standard of distinction in narrative design and dialogue throughout. The time loop dynamics and puzzle solutions are clever and will always make you smile.

The Forgotten City could have been a real gold nugget, but unfortunately, it is only gold-plated. The fault lies in the outdated technique and action phases. But for most of us, the gold plating is enough and fulfils its make-believe role perfectly. All the more so as the title manages to bring about a high-quality scenario, writing and general consistency. For a first try, the new studio Modern Storyteller offers us a convincing investigation where exploration and dialogue are at the gameplay’s core. Honestly, following the plot of the Forgotten City was enjoyable and we are looking forward to their next adventure, hoping that Nick Pearce and his team will make progress on the technical side. Errare humanum est, persevare diabolicum.

Maybe that's because of its ancient, mysterious tone, or its excellent writing, characters and sidequest structure. Maybe it's the open-endedness of the game world and how you can keep manual saves at any time, and even carry multiple autosaves. It could simply be how it actually allows you to unravel everything you can at a steady pace, giving you plenty of time each run and thus never becomes repetitive nor overstaying its welcome due of that. There are definitely a good number of reasons. Minor complaints like load area transition times or control binding not saving, some outdated visuals and maybe a couple more nitpicks I'm forgetting are not enough for me to whole-heartedly recommend this highly replayable adventure, especially to those like myself who have been desperately trying to find a time loop game they could actually enjoy. I especially loved the interesting fail state the game has, which is perfectly woven into the narrative and world. I loved the characters, which are varied and all have their own back story to tell. The narrative itself is brilliant, surprising, has multiple endings. I want more games like this; immersive puzzlers, with great world building and characters.

(I have a few small issues that I'm putting in these brackets because I actually don't want to dissuade anyone from playing this but I also can't ignore what caused me slight disappointment: the first interaction you have has some awful dialogue that isn't going to date the game well and put me off immediately (and yet doesn't reflect quality of the dialogue across the rest of the game), the gameplay is a little clunky when you're asked to do anything outside of walking and talking, and lastly, you have to be overly careful when navigating all dialogue trees if you don't want to miss a pivotal quest or piece of information).

Alas, after that time, it becomes tiresome, and the story, to me, became pretty naff. I love the idea and concept and most of all the setting, but I just found the story boring and the loop system irritating. Most of all, the endings were just not...satisfying? I was expecting something way more unique, but it was just a little silly to me, and not in the slightest believable. I think the game would have been better remaining cryptic and a constant puzzle and mystery, without all these stories and things interwoven making it feel like a pointless chore. Expand
