8.5/10 from me ~ I think you can ignore the bad reviews. If you liked other Netflix anime-to-film adaptations, this is one of the better ones in my opinion.
I have NOT seen the earlier anime nor read the comics. I probably have seen the Jackie Chan filmed version yet remember nothing from it.
This is VERY GOOD Netflix television. The first act especially is non-stop crazy, stylish action in every way, plot, acting, shot-framing, action scenes and lots of girls.
I did like Parasite Gray and the Netflix filmed version of Avatar Air Bender. I could NOT get thru Netflix One Piece. I recognize the new One Piece has a ton of talent behind and on the screen.
When I put on my film critic hat, there is one big problem these anime-to-film adaptations struggle with. Their source material is from comics which came out 1985-1995. If nothing else, this means these shows have little to no relevance to the world of the 2020s, For example the cos-play (costume dress up) convention scene seems a bit dated; and yet, the expressions of the extras and how the scene plays out dramatically is wonderful--unless you already
know it from the comics and in the anime.
Netflix's City Hunter takes DNA from Jame Bond, comic books, anime, and other 20th century pop culture. Fortunately as in the best of Netflix's anime-to-film adaptations, the commitment behind and on the screen is 100%. In film dedication counts for much.
As you undoubtedly expect, this is more well-produced, mindless, fun distraction, artfully made.

- Spot on balance of silly / serious
- Absolute respect of the characters
- Great action sequences
- Story exactly what you would expect from a good city hunter
- Every actor play well
Why not 10 :
- As well as he plays, main actor lacks a bit of stature.
- The final action scene doesn't quite manage to make Ryu's invincibility credible.
- Why is the original soundtrack used only at the very last second ?

The live-action adaptation stays faithful to the original manga, and Japan captures the unique Chūnibyō flavour inherent in the source material. However, in terms of local adaptation, it doesn't quite measure up to the French version. The overall production quality is relatively average, but the standout action sequences manage to divert the audience's attention from the somewhat lacklustre dialog scenes.

Kid of the 80s I grew up with the French version of City Hunter (Nicky Larson) and as many fans know, there was a French City Hunter movie some years ago, which I found pretty well done, with a lot of heart for the anime. It looked more like the anime as this movie does and is my favourite of both of them. That said, this Japanese version isn't bad either and shows the respect and passion of the original. Actors seem to take their part serious and the main character made a credible Ryo Saeba. Fans of the anime/manga should be happy with this next adaption.

On a déjà eu droit par le passé à d’autres adaptations (mal adaptées) du célèbre héros de pacotille issu du manga à l’origine bien débilos (il faut le rappeler, en effet, ceci expliquant la débilité intrinsèque de cette célèbre franchise…).
Ainsi, ne faut-il point s’étonner si ce nouveau film s’avère aussi débile que les précédents (deux films chinois en comptant celui avec Jackie Chan et un film français, plus récent) !Notons néanmoins que les comédiens et notamment le rôle principal fait tout ce qu’il peut (avec application et dévouement) ainsi que les comédiennes (très mignonnes), et notamment le rôle de Kaori, tout à fait convaincante.
Les scènes d'action sont presque convenables, ma foi, bien que rares, mais n’échappent décidément pas à la stupidité ambiante qui règne (en maîtresse implacable) et bouffe carrément le film entier.
Pas mal de clins d’oeil subsistent bien sûr à l’égard des amateurs du manga original et peuvent faire sourire mais là encore, l’inanité du scénario est rédhibitoire ! qui a écrit des conneries pareilles et qui a validé cette merde (de nanar de scénar de crevard de connard) ?!… c’est n’importe quoi du début à la fin ! Grosse déception donc !
