Kept it true to the previous material while spicing it up with a modern touch. Don’t go into it expecting a marvel movie explosion and just remember this is a quirky film from an era when movies could be just that and last the test of time. I think today critics and Hollywood kill what we love as movie goers, and that’s to just have something fun and different to watch. Breath of fresh air verses the super hero and Netflix movies that’s been thrown out this last decade. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a fantastic movie that captured the spirit of the original movie while still being able to find its own way. The actors and actresses in this movie bring a new energy into the franchise, and a perspective that I think lacked in the original. While some might scoff at the idea of not having Bill make puns every five seconds, the humor in this is no less entertaining for those who can put the gatekeeping aside. It is filled with plenty of call backs that will establish itself as a knowledgeable successor to a beloved franchise. Expand

To us, the story is very well written to include the old Ghostbusters play their parts and way better than 2016 Ghostbusters portrayal of original Ghostbuster characters play meaningless parts. This movie has heart, it ties into the 1st movie and is inclusive to old fans and new fans including the children. I wish I could of seen adult Oscar or Rick Moranis' character, but seeing that it was the new generation starting from Egon's family maybe the next sequel might have those two in it. If the feeling you got from watching them altogether made you feel like a kid again on the tonight show, this is exactly how I felt when I got to watch this new movie. It made my eyes water. I hope you all enjoy this movie and experience. Expand

Is Ghostbusters Afterlife a perfect film? NO.

Does it stand on its own without relying on nostalgia and the strength of the original?

Also no.

But you know what? It didn't have to. Ghostbusters Afterlife was exactly what it needed to be.. a loving homage to a beloved film series and a touching family film with just a hint of the subtle "horro" the original brought to the table. There were parts that made me jump.. parts that made me laugh.. and, most importantly for this film, parts that made me cry. I don't admit this lightly, the end of this film hit me hard and I loved it!

I understand some folks being put off by the reluance on nostalgia and rehashed story beats... but I DON'T CARE! As a fan who saw the originals in the theaters as a kid, and taking my children to see this one now... when so many terrible and half-hearted sequels have been shoved out 9ver the last decade...... this was precisely what I wanted and I can not stress enough how much I appreciate everyone involved in this movie for bringing so much passion and respect to a franchise that so important to me.

Very few movies over the last 10 or so years have really hit me emotionally. But this one delivered a gut-punch in the best possible way.

Afterlife is the kind of movie that leans heavily into the nostalgia factor and does little to really open the door to the next stage of adventures. I think fans view it more positively than they would have if the 2016 film never existedAfterlife is the kind of movie that leans heavily into the nostalgia factor and does little to really open the door to the next stage of adventures. I think fans view it more positively than they would have if the 2016 film never existed because when you have such a negative film that preceded it, You can only go up from there. And while Afterlife is by no means a bad movie, especially in comparison to the 2016 film or even GB2, It certainly isn't a memorable one.

The characters are underdeveloped to a fault. The mother is given no backstory at all, There is a character called Podcast because he has a podcast, and Trevor is your typical male teenage character. The story is painfully slow at times and the CGI looks dated even for a film from 2021, specifically, I'd like to point out the god-awful Walmart scene so heavily featured in the trailers.

The only two redeemable things about this movie are Paul Rudd and Mckenna Grace. Rudd perfectly captures the few attempts at humor in the film, which is more often missed than hit, but he is frustratingly absent in the second half. Grace is the true star of the film and really helped make it tolerable as this was very much her journey.

All in all, Fans are gonna enjoy it for the nostalgia factor but I feel over time it would be received as highly. It's tolerable but forgettable. There isn't a single stand-out moment in this film and it runs for at least a good 20 minutes too long IMO.

Being a big fan of the first two movies and the video game that essentially was GB3, I was hearing mixed reviews all over the place. To all the haters: You're wrong. Afterlife is a love letter to the legacy of the first two movies and clearly was written with allot of love and respect. True, it does rehash allot of elements and has allot of fan service, but it's not as bad as some critics make it out to be. Afterlife essentially finishes off the story that started in the original Ghostbusters and also manages to have it's own identity. Grace Mckenna steals the show with a fantastic performance, and at such a young age. Clearly this is an actress that'll be really big one day. Paul Rudd is his usual self and brings allot of charm. Newcomer Logan Kim is a hoot, clearly not as seasoned as his costars, but his charm grows on you and compliments Mckenna's character nicely. Carrie Coon is okay, but I feel allot more could have been done with her character. The rest of the cast kind of just fade into the background. Fortunately all the cameos are used sparingly and don't steal too much of the spotlight.

Overall:
Ghostbusters Afterlife is a welcome addition to the Ghostbusters franchise and a great conclusion to the original story arch. From here Ghostbusters has the chance to start a new chapter, which is slightly teased in the post credits scene.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't expecting to be touched by this movie, cinema for the last few years has been lacking. So my expectations were low, especially in regards to the 2016 film as films appeared to only be about content less content. In contract, Ghostbusters: Afterlife was fun, wholesome, original and uplifting. It was refreshing to go to a theater, pay a bunch of money, and actually being entertained. It was almost shocking how good this film was.
After seeing the character development, especially that of Phoebe Spengler (McKenna Grace), playing a character who is someone who is not neuro typical, brought me to tears. My daughter was recently diagnosed as not Neuro typical. So when I saw Phoebe's character develop into a thriving, confident, butt-kicking character, it really touched me. Thank you for writing this, and for McKenna Grace portraying this character. Keep it up.

I honestly don't think you could make a better love letter of a movie. It hit all of the right notes, and did them with style, grace, and respect to the original material (especially compared to the 2016 movie).

Lots of moments when my 11-year old daughter was really happy about it and bouncing up and down on the couch, so it's not just nostalgia in play. (And quite a few moments where me and my wife were applauding the screen which is really rare). Unlike many movies I've seen in recent years, it managed to compellingly grab my attention and inspire awe at several points. (Now that probably is nostalgia in play).

There's two credits scenes, one mid-way, one at the end.

Direction was awesome. Script was very well done and on point. Production design was fantastic. And bonus unexpected Olivia Wilde. Cinematography was great too, and unlike too many recent films, properly lit!

Well done to everyone involved. So much heart, love, and respect in this one.

So much heart and love in that story too. :)

Mckenna Grace's performance was superb also Logan Kim, Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Annie Potts, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Celeste O'Connor, Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Olivia Wilde gave pretty great performances too. The writing especially the screenplay was excellent; the dialogue was really funny loved the jokes that were written for the character Phoebe that her character comes up with. Unfortunately, I must admit it felt like they dropped the ball towards the final act and it did end up feeling a little rushed. I think it would have benefited from an extra 20 mins to really get the final act to the same level as the rest of the movie. Maybe this is something that could be rectified with an extended cut? Reminiscent of The Goonies and Stand by Me, AFTERLIFE utilizes it's children actors to their fullest. Every one of them shines with McKenna Grace and Logan Kim being the obvious stand outs. The movie succeeds with both it's touching family story, whether that's the family you find or the ones you're stuck with, and it's mystifying sci-fi horror side. It's a splendid movie that was very obviously made for fans of the original, although it still doesn't quite capture all of it's appeal. Nevertheless, it's a great sequel to one of the best horror comedies of all time, and a great family movie all on it's own. Expand

I thought it was going to be woke garbage like they've been doing to movies and shows lately, especially remakes, but I was pleasantly wrong. The nostalgia made me so happy, but it didn't just rely on that, even though it technically had to. It successfully attempted to make its own story that held itself up without the ghostbuster crutch. Favourite scene was when the little marshmallow men were wreaking havoc. OMG, it was so funny and they were so cute! I loved Paul Rudd in this. He played his role very well. I also liked most of the actors. Podcast was one of the biggest highlights. SO funny! Now, here are some things I didn't like: I wasn't a big fan of Phoebe. She sort of eventually grew on me, but she was quite obnoxious. She seemed way too rude for my liking, but she didn't ruin the movie or anything. It was still enjoyable. I also didn't like how there weren't many different types of ghosts. They had some big scenes of nostalgic ones, but others were shown very quickly as if they were trying to rush the 3rd act to end it. I don't know if they're making a 2nd film, I don't think they necessarily should, even though I wouldn't be mad if they did, but there were very few ghosts in this. I also wished all the kids were teens, like Phoebe and Podcast, but again it didn't ruin the movie. Overall, I enjoyed it and I would definitely come back and rewatch it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The moment when Phoebe grabs the neutrino wand at the police station gives the entire movie a free pass in my book. That was an incredibly subtle, clever and accurate point of characterisation. Even some of the biggest GB fans forget about Egon's sudden temper when he gets pushed too far, and the fact that Phoebe was shown to have inherited that very specific character trait was genius. It really proved these people cared about getting this movie right. 10/10 Expand

This was a great movie! It was very heartfelt, well acted, and consistent with the theme and tone of the original. It even has a similar sense of humor as the originals.

Highly recommend for any fan of ghostbusters and for anyone wanting a fun adventure movie.

Now, as some reviewers have pointed out, it does contain a good bit of fan service, but it doesn't detract from the movie, in reality such call-backs either logically fit with the story- of grandchildren solving the mystery of who their grandfather was, or other fan service amount to only fractions of a second, and aren't dwelled on.

If you are a ghostbusters fan like me, if you watched the cartoons, love ghostbusters 2 for all it’s flaws, then you will love this one! Don’t expect perfection, but it’s totally worth the wait! Tons of originality, yet also tons of little references and easter eggs… (especially to the first movie) some may say it has too much fan service, and at some parts, they may be right, but I would rather have a movie with fan service (even if a bit overdone) instead of one that disrespects the legacy of a franchise I love. The film offered closure on the main cast, it introduced us to the next generation of family members and it showed us that taking the jump into the unknown doesn't have to be scary or fail. Where the 2016 failed in trying to be funny and over explain everything, afterlife succeeded. The story was great, it had scary moments, comedic moments, sad moments and paid homage to family and the love and respect they had for Harold. I don't think we could have asked for a better swan song and a Segway to relaunch the franchise for the next generation of Ghostbusters. I go to the cinema to enjoy and be entertained by a film, not to have gender identity politics rammed down my throat and this achieved that, the cast were brilliant and the handling of gender swapping the lead role was done brilliantly. Many in Hollywood and the wider film industry could learn from this, films are created for cinema customers to be entertained and offer escapism, not for critics who want identity politics and real world issues. To me Ghostbusters Afterlife is by far the best film I have seen in a long long time, it made me laugh, it made me scared, it kept me entertained and it made me cry. Expand

Went and saw Ghostbusters Afterlife tonight, and wanted to say a little about it. I’ve read a lot of the reviews, but felt oddly compelled to write my own. I’m a lifelong, Grade A Ghostbusters-obsessed fanatic. They were my heroes. The first movie I ever saw in theaters was GB2. I have a ridiculous collection of GB stuff; hell I recently put $500 on a proton pack that I won’t even get for a year. I didn’t dislike GB2016. Keep that in mind. So, to keep it short, I just wanted to say that I felt like Ghostbusters Afterlife is a movie that was made literally just for me. It became more and more emotional to me, for a myriad of reasons, as the film went on. I had an unexpected, deep feeling of the realization of my own mortality tonight. In a really positive way. But seeing my GB history like that, knowing it would be the last time MY Ghostbusters would have such a direct impact…it was powerful. I realized I had been waiting over 30 years to know what happened. Maybe even just to feel that spark again. I don’t know. The last scene, post credits…it said it all. Time to park the past and turn a wonderful eye to the future. While my era of busting ghosts closed in many ways tonight, a whole new saga has just strapped up and switched on. Yes, I could poke holes in plot points, but I didn’t show up to dissect a script. I came to feel the magic one more time. I’m a Ghostbuster, and tonight I finally got the chance to know that it means as much as I always thought. We all have those treasures, this one is mine. Expand

Why the discord? It's ok to look back at the past and remember things and people fondly, don't feel bad, just so long as you don't obsessively dwell in the past, as in re-watching OG Ghostbusters 200 times and know it inside and out.

The movie was fun, felt sincere (they didn't put words into anyone's mouth like Di$ney) and the callbacks are great for the kids to spot. It was nice to see the has beens who just showed up and didn't really help anyway but the film was all about the new characters.

All in all it was like opening an old photo album, looking back on the old times, then adding new pictures to the leaves at the back. There's nothing wrong with that, don't feel bad, just put the book back on the shelf and get on with your life afterwards.

I loved this film, this is how you do a passing of the torch film, not just ignore everything that's happened before then, disrespecting the franchise and history in the process. I really look forward to another film. Shame on all the professional critics review bombing this film, everyone can see what you are doing from a million miles away and you've lost all credibility, that is, if you've ever had any to begin with.

The trailers left me optimistic, but also worried they might be leaning too hard on the Strange Things vibe. All that trepidation left me within the first 10 minutes. Ghostbusters Afterlife is a solid and enjoyable reboot with lots of nods to the past, solid pacing and is a real love letter to fans. Aside from the really strong and likable cast, the main reason Ghostbusters Afterlife succeeds where GB2016 failed is that the film makers had a real respect for the source material. GB2016 had some real talent with Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig, but the writing and style of comedy was just the polar opposite of what a Ghostbusters movie should be. Coming from Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman - with Ivan producing and providing oversite - Ghostbusters Afterlife has a lot of heart which left me choked up by the end. By the time it was over it left me looking forward to where the story will go next. That's what critics giving this a poor review don't understand, complaining there is too much fan service. I disagree, thats what this film succeeded on most - giving us GB fans hope that there is a bright future for this franchise. Expand

Tonally, it was more of a drama, which felt like a strong contrast to the previous films. Sentimental, overly nostalgic—I don’t think we needed that many references to the previous films—and very derivative of numerous film and tv tropes. Although the character interactions were good, the characters themselves felt stereotypical—we’ve seen all of these characters many times before in other movies. All of this might not matter so much if it was still a sarcastic, dry comedy where some silliness is expected. But when the tone shifts to something more sentimental, more realism is expected, and this movie does not feel real. Characters know too much information without earning it, people like and dislike each other for no reason, people make decisions for no reason other than to continue the plot. All in all, it wasn’t a bad movie, but not really a good movie either. The setups were good, but it felt like missed potential. Expand

The all-female lead rebootAs someone who grew up in the 1980s, Ghostbusters had a big influence on my life, it was an all-time great film, and I have been putting off watching Ghostbusters Afterlife, because I didn't want to be disappointed. The all-female lead reboot that was released in 2016 was awful, one of the worst things to ever happen in film. Of course, the media was desperate for it to be a success and when it flopped massively, they blamed everything expect that the fact the film was terrible. It must be racists who refused to go see it as there was a black woman in it, completely forgetting the character of Winston Zeddemore from Ghostbusters 2, a much-loved character in the franchise. Then they said it must be because it was all female lead parts, so it must be those horrible misogynists who refused to go see it, again totally forgetting the lovefest we all had with Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett in the original films. History has now largely forgotten that terrible reboot, in the same way it has forgotten some of the Terminator films after the third film.

So, with all that said, I had major reservations about Ghostbusters Afterlife, I didn't really just want a rehash of old jokes with the original cast, as that would come across as desperate, I also didn't want to see the original cast replaced by some woke wet dream of the Hollywood elite, luckily, they did something very clever, they looked at the success of Stranger Things and realised that you could have young kids with older teenagers, and throw in a bit of nostalgia, a few easter eggs, and create a brand new film, that is part of the canon, and doesn't destroy the legacy at all.

The basic story of Afterlife is a single mom and her two kids move to a small town, they soon find out that their recently deceased grandfather was one of the original Ghostbusters, and as they explore the house he left for them, they start to realise that there was a secret legacy he left behind.

I don't want to spoil things, but it is no secret that Harold Ramis who played Dr. Egon Spengler died in 2014, and I will say that this film pays a really nice tribute to him and his memory. I will say no more than that.

The film is really slick, way slicker than the original films, as I mentioned earlier, it reminded me of Stranger Things, and that is a good thing.

As a true third film in the franchise, it hit on everything I wanted just about right, it didn't spoil things, and I would like to think new fans and fans of the original will leave happy. You had a strong female lead, you had a black character, and still the film has done really well considering the whole real world is falling apart thing. So, I guess those silly far left critics really didn't know what they were talking about.

The Good
A really well-made sequel, that furthers the storylines of all the original characters, as well as allowing the potential of more films. I loved the incidental music that instantly took me back to the original films.

The Bad
Since the original films were about 1h45 and this is 2h04, I feel like it didn't need to be that long, but I never felt like it was dragging either. My only real complaint was the lack of a big song in the film. The original had the Ghostbusters song, the sequel had Higher and Higher, when the Statue of Liberty came to life. Overall
As a true fan of the original, I was so happy that this film was decent. Some great moments, plenty of Easter Eggs, and a lovely ending.
I score Ghostbusters Afterlife a strong 8/10

DON’T BELIEVE THE SO CALLED “PROFESSIONAL” REVIEWS

I went and saw this with my two sons 10 and 13 - I say this because personally I grew up with the ghostbusters and know the first two movies almost line by line so my thoughts will of course be biased. I think that if you know the first movie at least you will be in for a treat although the knowledge is not entirely needed as my boys absolutely loved it - my oldest even cried at the end (I don’t think there was a dry eye in the theatre) outside of fan service it’s a great movie that keeps the ghostbusters spirit alive, it can get downright scary and serious at times but is lighthearted and fun as well - it feels like a true ghostbusters movie with a gritty modern coat of paint. I am appalled at the negative critic reviews - not only is this a classic but it does a great job of honoring the late Harold Ramis. For those of us that grew up with the franchise and never got a third movie (outside of the game that released over a decade ago which was great in its own right) this is what you have been waiting for. For younger people this is enough to ignite a love for this amazing franchise - my boys loved it. For the reviewers who think this wasn’t good enough? I hope you lose your job, the difference between audience and critic reception is staggering, you have obviously lost touch with what people like.

If I remember anything (anything at all) from that 2016 debacle, it was the soulless, baseline "watchability" of it -- an unfortunate hallmark of too many "triple A" releases nowadays. With Jason Reitman following in his father's footsteps though, you can very obviously track an undercurrent of respect and reverence for the original piece throughout "Afterlife." This element can sometimes persist to a bit of a fault, but the effort is mostly satisfying and even profound at times. The pacing is a bit of a challenge for me, with the cautious, slow-growing approach not really acting as something I remember the original films possessing. Seems like this was more of a Jason Reitman touch at work. All things considered, the end result is enjoyable, definitely making up for a lot of the wounds left by the 2016 reboot. Expand

Went to see this movie knowing nothing about it and I think that's for the best.

I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. I loved it. Its a really nice love letter to the original Ghostbuster movie and a great send of for Harold Ramis.

Good sequel (and not a reboot) of a beloved franchise, nostalgic....you'll feel old waching this and it give you emotions.
It mix well things for new the generations and old fans alike; a rare quality in a late sequel.
The only things off balance maybe are:
a) The typical teens movie stereotype "child-prodigy-that-can-do-anything" that is a little abused.
b) A teen-love backstory that is a little shallow (for an adult viewer at least).
c) It has less humor and less "scary stuff" than the first two films (1986 and 89).
But it is not a big deal, it's a good movie
It delivers....Ghostbusters was missed for a long time.
It is very recommended that you watch the fisrt one to undersand all the references.
I hope in Ghostbusters 4.
Beware there are 2 post credit scene...the second is the best one!

Disney - Lucas film, this is how you re-ignite a franchise, watch and learn you; talentless hacks and butchers of popular culture cinema...
...a wonderful little movie made on a small budget and a superb performance from main protagonist, the young actress Mckenna Grace. Not perfect, some minor issues but overall a wonderful movie for this genre and target audience, and made with love care reverence and respect to its original roots, a great popcorn film, recommend if you want some fun and the movie for me acted as a portal for two hours to escape the suffering of day to day existence and reality…
* ...and additionally this film puts that massively high budgeted disaster from 2016 in a pit of shame..

Yet above these criticisms the filmWell, the main problem with Ghostbusters: Afterlife is that it relies too heavily on the original movie for inspiration without providing the kind of characters that were interesting in the original movies. Yet above these criticisms the film manages to at least partly entertain and does an emotionally satisfying job of not only wrapping up Egon’s legacy but Harold Ramis legacy as well. I just wish the original actors were more involved but coming from a GB fan with very high standards the filmmaker was at least partly successful in both closing the original movie legacy while forging a new one. With the stalling and missteps the franchise has taken over the years you can’t ask for more than that. Expand
