Last-act let-down aside, this is a confident and creepy ghoul-in-the-pool horror that makes Bryce McGuire a filmmaker to watch. Wusses, bring armbands.
Night Swim comes from a crafty 2014 short directed by Blackhurst and McGuire, not quite three minutes in length minus end credits. Apples and oranges, I suppose, but the short gets more done in terms of atmosphere and rhythmic wiles than the full-length version. Still: These filmmakers have both a past and a future in evocative horror.
Killer elevator, killer lamb, killer attic. Now, killer pool. I love these kinds of trashy horrors. Yet, considering the concept, it is shockingly good. The main problem is final. Could have been much better. But, it was fine.
I should’ve known this movie would be awful as soon as I realized it was about an evil swimming pool. If this was a low budget Shudder or Lionsgate flick, I would expect something as subpar as this. I’m actually surprised that Universal Pictures picked up a stinker like this one.
Nothing happens for 90 minutes then a bunch of nonsense happens for 10. At least we’re back to normal with awful January horror films getting released…
