The film is replete with unforgettable images, stellar performances all up and down the cast, and genuinely original and thoughtful revisions of expected tropes.
The filmmaker has such a strong command of mood, character and performances – especially impressive given the age of her cast – that her world quickly, seductively overwhelms.
"Tigers Are Not Afraid" was a movie where it was shown that Mexican cinema still has good things to show, a good story, good plot and good characters, and this movie is not the exception. The story as well as dark and raw is fascinating, and the performances are captivating, a jewel of the few views in current Mexican cinema.
At its best, López’s movie has that del Toro signature style, and she also proves herself a deft director of children, another element she shares in common with the Oscar winner.
Despite an occasionally choppy narrative, this Mexican smart horror offering serves up a creepy fairy tale-like story set against the landscape of the nation's current drug wars and what they're doing to its population, especially children orphaned by the violence. The film's fine adolescent performers deliver excellent portrayals mature beyond their years, and the picture skillfully mixes a unique blend of fright, action and surprisingly salty humor. It's gratifying to see a film of this genre that successfully resists the temptation to sanitize its material, given its young cast members, but sensitive viewers should nevertheless beware that director Issa Lopez holds little back (though, thankfully, without becoming gratuitous or grotesque). Fans of smart horror releases are sure to enjoy this offering, a work reminiscent of the early films of Guillermo del Toro, gritty but not gross and eminently entertaining.
