The bottom line is that Showtime's high-stakes drama remains enormously entertaining, making its return more than welcome, even if the show's latest creative bets feel somewhat hedged.
The “Billions” characters are morally fluid, and they are entertaining and willing to froth at the mouth for some good dramatic action, and that’s that. This season, the relationship between Chuck and Axe has shifted once again, and there are two promising guest stars — Corey Stoll and Julianna Margulies. I’m ready for it.

Like many series that rely on a highly accomplished cast of rogues Billions feels like it's trying hard to squeeze what's left out it's damaged protagonists. Everyone has double crossed everyone so many times that i feel hard pressed to believe any justification for these people staying in each others company.
So far season 5 has the distinct whiff of a shark about to be jumped but Billions has been very good at making the far fetched compelling. i'll give it until the 4th episode before i start wondering if i should just wait for the 3rd season of Succession to get my fix of rich jerks being awful to each other.

The 5th improves on the 4th (or at least the four episodes offered for review do).
“Billions” remains one of the most stylish series on television, filled with first-class production values. ... One can get dizzy keeping up with all the back- and front-stabbing, but it’s entertaining as hell because they all deserve what’s coming to them.
It's still a wild ride through high society spheres and exclusive nooks, fetchingly sold by Lewis' and Giamatti's performative swagger. "Billions" also is the rare premium cable series that mixes prestige production slickness with broad cultural appeal. ... Only this time around, each man's ennui feels a little hollower.
Despite all the sub-plots about cryptomining and company mergers and other things I probably missed, this isn’t really a show about the world of high finance. It’s about masculinity and ego. All that testosterone is keeping the show going, but let’s hope the writers know when it’s time to send these characters into retirement.
Oh no, I agree with the last three reviews. Suspension of disbelief is getting rather difficult. In such a high risk business, once trust is lost, it's well and truly gone. You don't re-hire, you don't do side deals, you just move on. They're making mistakes, allowing themselves to become vulnerable, turning into a mess. Why didn't they put the time and effort into refreshing the cast, tighten the dialogue, write a believable storyline? Looking like the last season. Sad.

the first reviewer, Pogelwoodcancer, did a much better critique than all the paid sycophants of the so-called expert section. I am just much more disappointed in the writing, which has devolved into a rummaging around "what's the meaning of life when you have everything"and the acting (auto-pilot for most of them). It is entirely avoidable and unnecessary viewing.

Absolutely dreadful.. very little of the plot makes sense or feels consistent with the characters we've come to know. The renewed rivalry between Axe and Chuck is inexplicable as is the return of Taylor Mason and crew. The writers are just winging it at the moment, with no narrative arc in mind.

This seems to be the new playbook. Have a great show make 2-3 seasons, then inject enough SJW nonsense to make you want to projectile vomit. Writers care more about injecting some weird polarizing political issue then what made the show successful to begin with. Lefty critics love it, regular people hate it. I doubt it gets renewed, it’s clear they want this show canceled
