It’s Me, Hilary becomes a warm evocation of a time gone by, similar to Knight’s old drawings of the Plaza.
The documentary is a loving tribute to his personal charm and other talents.
It's Me, Hilary isn't simply a doc about Knight's life and work. It's also an affecting story about the friendship that formed between him and the 28-year-old Dunham.
It seems like a missed opportunity to dig deeper into Knight’s aesthetic and emotional turmoil. Despite the doc’s overall sketchy nature, however, this remains an enjoyably affectionate tribute.
More a cotton candy bouquet than a documentary, It’s Me, Hilary: The Man Who Drew Eloise introduces you to a man who has made millions of people happy--and would like nothing more than a chance to do it again.
Dunham shows us why Hilary Knight doesn’t feel quite content, despite what he has done. Drawing Eloise clearly didn’t mean embracing her view of the world.
