The show's best tension comes from the awesome/awful self-awareness that plagues the directors as they attempt to make a film while being very much filmed themselves.
These are fascinating, smart guys who really know the business but the flashy production of the show distracts from the points they’re trying to make. It’s a minor complaint for a really good show. There are so many remarkably interesting scenes in the first two episodes alone.
The unscripted series is surprisingly engrossing and probably more valuable than two years of film school for would-be auteurs.
This is strictly for lovers of the process.
Once The Chair gets beyond producers bloviating, it’s a more interesting series about the two newbie directors.
When The Chair highlights the differences between its two stars, it is engaging and enlightening.... However, the show is significantly less interesting during some of the conversations that surround some of the decision-making.
The more we get to see each concept, the more interesting The Chair could become. But strap yourself in for long, detailed meetings, mostly populated by people wearing knit caps, about stuff that either will make no sense to you or that you don't care about.
