Between Geena (Maya Lynne Robinson), DJ’s wife, and Darlene, the show still features wise women with acerbic wit and zero tolerance for idiocy. Yes, in some ways, Roseanne will never be replaced. But in other ways, she already has been.
The writing as overseen by veteran Roseanne producer Bruce Helford is sharp--the tone is very similar to the 10 years of the original Roseanne you may have watched and enjoyed.
After the first couple seasons of Roseanne, Roseanne herself became the weakest link, a drag on the very talented surrounding cast. Now everyone else can step out from behind Roseanne's obese shadow and really shine. Great show! Much improved.
Great show made me laugh and cry throughout the first apieosde and accurately describes a family in grieving when you lose someone important, especially as important as Roseanne. I'd like to see where ths family goes and the direction they are headed to now that their matriarch and the person they always looked to for advice is now gone.
In what’s been a woefully bland fall TV season, especially for network comedy, it’s frankly a delight to watch a sitcom this solid, with a cast of people you love this much, all executing so well, and, we hope at some point, not have to couch their praise in caveats about the Roseanne of it all.
It's not going to be a cultural phenomenon without the woman once at its center, but it seems likely to be a comfy, enjoyable place to sit down for a meal.
The two episodes I screened also made me laugh quite a bit. None of the jokes are going to be all-timers--okay, maybe one line about Pierce Brosnan will make it into the time capsule but the characters have a warm and funny way about them that the original Roseanne had in spades and the new version too often replaced with mean-spirited insults and the like. While the characters still tease and insult each other incessantly, there’s more warmth to it.
None of them has ever carried a series before, and as good as they were in The Conners debut, the glue that held the show together was the unseen ghost of Roseanne, as aggravating and amusing as ever, invisible but never absent. I'll believe she's replaceable when I see it.
The premiere episode felt more close to the original Roseanne series in tone, humor and pathos since the original series. Bravo to the extraordinary cast and writers. Roseanne who? Already forgotten.
The first episode is pretty bad. I didn't watch 'Roseanne' so I couldn't tell you if it's better or worse, but there was one funny line in the episode. I'm not sure if this was how 'Roseanne' was too, but the humor seemed like it was drawn from a humor 101 book, where the punchline was fairly telegraphed. I could appreciate the serious topic of the show (which I won't ruin), but there were moments that made me think this show might work better as a drama. Lots of people talk about the stellar acting skills of Goodman and Metcalf. I don't think they were on display in this episode, but I think it's possible this first episode being about putting 'granny rose' into the history books, was a necessary inevitably forced premise, and that things might get better starting with episode 2. I'm going to stick around for at least another episode or two to see where this goes. I am admittedly coming for the humor, and not finding much thus far. But you gotta give a show more than one episode.
I'm trying so hard to like this show, but I'm really struggling with it. The punchy humor just isn't there, and what is there seems forced. It's just not the same. Before, I would never miss an episode of Roseanne. I've even watched the old reruns, some of them 10 times or more and they're still hilarious, and with The Conners, I could care less if I missed an episode or not. Not very impressed.
ABC, you F'd up. So Rosanne said something stupid, so you fire her? The cast of The View say stupid things that offend me (a registered Independent) all the time, how come you didn't fire them (or all the other ABC celebs that say/do stupid things? Rosanne was 90% of why viewers tuned in. I think the cast of the Conner's are talented but the new show is boring and I lost interest after one episode. When will the bleeding heart liberal idiots in Hollywood realize that a majority of America doesn't agree with you? By the way, the only reason I have The View on is to keep a list of their sponsor, and boycott them.
It’s pretty sad the way the critics are falling all over themselves giving this mess of a show good reviews. I’m sorry but Rosanne was the heart and soul of the show. No fault to the cast as they are trying to make the best of a bad situation. It’s like trying to remake Seinfeld without Jerry Seinfeld or Mad Men without Don ****. Who cares about the supporting cast. Obviously no one, the ratings for this crap fest are dismal.
