Just about any internet user could benefit from a virtual private network, colloquially known as a VPN. So what is a VPN and what is a VPN used for? It is an app that can be installed on any computer or mobile device to secure your network connection from external threats like your internet service provider and other malicious actors.

A VPN masks your IP address and routes your connection through a private tunnel, which makes it impossible for anyone other than the user to gain access to the network. Amid rising online concerns, this feature has proved to be vital in keeping users safe when they use the internet to transmit sensitive information. Meanwhile, a VPN can also help you bypass streaming restrictions and access movies and TV shows from around the world.

A VPN can be installed on your desktop computer, laptop, or phone. Whether you use Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android, some of the most popular and credible VPN services are available for your devices, while most VPN providers allow users to connect multiple devices with one account. So let's discuss the best VPNs and how to set up a VPN.

What are the best VPNs to install on my device?

VPN apps have grown in popularity over the years. However, not all companies provide the same performance and features. While you can find some best free VPNs, paying for higher security and better speed may be beneficial for you. When comparing top VPNs, the ones that always come out on top are NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark. They all have their own benefits and special features, but their most significant common factor is the trust they have been able to garner from subscribers.

NordVPN: Affordable, fast, and super secure, NordVPN is great for both beginners and pros, regardless of the device or the operating system. It boasts more than 5,000 servers in 62 countries on the planet and allows up to six simultaneous connections. In addition, you also have the option to choose a dedicated IP address and take a DNS (Domain Name System) leak test, which detects security flaws. NordVPN can unblock most streaming services, although Netflix and BBC iPlayer might pose slight difficulties.

ExpressVPN: For blazing speed and an established reputation, choose ExpressVPN. Some of their sparkling features include more than 3,000 servers in 94 locations from around the world, up to five connections at the same time, and an average connection speed of up to 880 Mbps (megabytes per second). ExpressVPN is also one of those rare services that can unblock region-locked titles on Netflix and Disney+, making it incredible for streaming. It is pricier than other alternatives but given all the features it offers, the cost is worth it.

Surfshark: A fairly smaller player with an already firm credibility, Surfshark offers budget-friendly VPN services packed with several fantastic features. It comes with anti-malware as well as an ad-blocker, runs more than 3,200 servers in 65 locations from around the world, and unlike many of the bigger companies, Surfshark allows unlimited connections.

Follow these steps to install a VPN app on an iPhone.

  1. Subscribe to your chosen VPN service, download the app from the Apple App Store, and sign in to your account.

  2. Once you sign in, the app will seek permission to configure the VPN on your device. Tap 'allow' to permit this.

  3. Enter your password, Face ID, or Touch ID to enable the VPN.

  4. To access the VPN any time after this, launch Settings on your phone and tap General.

  5. Choose the VPN client and turn it on or off.

How to install a VPN on a Mac

Almost every VPN provider — at least the most popular ones — has an app for MacOS devices. The steps to install a VPN on your Mac are as follows:

  1. Sign up for your chosen VPN, download and install the app

  2. Sign in to your account

  3. Connect to any server you want

How to install a VPN on Windows

Most providers offer a VPN client for Windows. The steps to download and install a VPN on your Windows device are:

  1. Go to Settings, then Network & Internet, followed by VPN. To create a new connection, click the "Add a VPN connection" option.

  2. Provide the required details, such as VPN type and server name and address.

  3. You will see the name of the VPN network appear in the list of Wi-Fi networks, following which the VPN window will open for you.

  4. Select the VPN you want and click Connect.

  5. You can configure or remove VPNs from this window.

How to install a VPN on Android

VPN apps for Android devices are easily available from all major providers. Here's how to set it up.

  1. Download the VPN of your choice from the Google Play Store.

  2. Create an account and sign in, and simply follow the prompts.

  3. Choose OK when the app asks to set up the VPN.

  4. This same option can be used to connect to the app at any time.

  5. Use the Settings option to configure your VPN.

The bottom line

When using a VPN client for any operating system, set-up is easy, hassle-free, and takes only a few minutes. Once you have a VPN installed, there is a simple way to check if it is giving you the protection you signed up for.

First, with the VPN turned off, look up your actual IP address. This can be found in system preferences on your device under network or internet settings as "IPv4." However, if you want a quicker way, you can also go to WhatIsMyIPAddress.com to look up your IP address. Next, with the VPN active, connect to any server and go back to check your IP address again. Ideally, your real IP address should be replaced with one provided by the VPN app. If you still see your own IP address, then you have a DNS leak and should contact your provider for a fix.
