The whole thing is so provocative, beautifully cinematic and in touch with its head-decapitating roots.
The film is also bold and clear cut about the way women’s bodies are made into objects of both reverence and shame – but its pièce de résistance is the shot of a vagina during birth, an entirely natural part of human existence that, in America, caused such a fuss that The First Omen was nearly slapped with an extreme NC-17 certificate. What a way to prove this film’s point.

With skin-crawling scenes and a surprising discussion about the control of women's bodies, 'The First Omen' finds a new angle to explore the well-established franchise. The prequel doesn't always manage the tricky balance between reverence to the original and new ideas. Still, there's a lot to love, both for newcomers and returning fans.
For veteran viewers who’ve seen it all before, it’s not exactly the Second Coming. But novice nunsploitation audiences might find this habit-forming: a stylish enough entry-level initiation.
As punishing as some of The First Omen’s terrors are, they are quickly forgotten in service of answering questions about Damien (and leaving the door open for further sequels) that undercut Free’s gripping turn.
Stevenson has configured her tale as female body-horror fit for a dissertation, without giving it much of a spine: while slick, the set pieces are few, far between, and over too fast.
This is one of those isolated cases where a prequel works well. Here, the greatest success was to stick to the skeleton of the 1976 original, creating an atmosphere that generates anxiety without common and predictable effects. One of those that should not be seen at night.

I have to be honest, when I watched the first trailer, I was hype. I saw The Omen when I was 16 years old. I got thrilled , the plot was interesting, and there were some moments that made me feel nervous. However, when I watched this pre-sequel, it didn't convince me; it felt like much "filing," and just one part was "interesting," but the whole movie didn't make me feel anything. It prefers watching in your home on a streaming service. final score of 6

The filmmaker references both "Suspiria" and the 2018 Luca Guadagnino remake, which is to say "The First Omen" wants to be both a horror and an art film. That's not necessarily a bad thing. You have to reward ambition. Grade it on a curve. First-time filmmaker Arkasha Stevenson must've liked the wholly unexpected appearance of the Baader-Meinhof Complex in "Suspiria", as she too situates "The First Omen" in a historical context, utilizing protestors who are probably the Italian Socialist Party. So you have a conflict between the church and secularism, but it's not the same conflict we're experiencing today. It's a true period piece. Unlike many denominations today, this church appears to be a wholly matriarchal construct. Don't try too hard to connect it with anything in the current news cycle. In my opinion, it's pure escapism. "The First Omen" is very serious about its silliness. Arguably, one red herring too many. This may sound like faint praise, but everybody involved tried to make a good movie.

This could not be a logical prequel as the original omen & Omen 2 made it a fact that Damiens mother was a jackal. In the original, that revelation was made when Robert Thorn & Jennings the reporter went to the old cemetery and found Damien's real mother's grave. That fact was reaffirmed in Damien:omen 2 just before his cousin suffered a brain bleed.
