Confronting Iran’s death penalty through four stories, Rasoulof involves the viewer in the decisions that must be made and the ramifications that result when one is tasked with executing someone.
Those Who Wish Me Dead MOVIE Trailer Thriller HBO Max
Streaming on HBO Max the same day as it is released in theaters, Dead is the first film in four years from screenwriter-turned-director Taylor Sheridan (Wind River, Hell or High Water). Angelina Jolie, Nicholas Hoult, Jon Bernthal, and Tyler Perry head the cast for the modern-day thriller with western elements set in the Montana wilderness, where a teenage murder witness attempts to evade two pursuers with the aid of a survival expert.
The Underground Railroad MINISERIES Trailer Drama Prime Video
In development since 2017, Amazon's 10-episode adaptation of Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer-winning novel of the same name comes from Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), who directs every episode. Like the book, the series depicts an alternate history of America's 19th century South, where an escape route for slaves features a literal—rather than merely metaphorical—subterranean railroad. South African actress Thuso Mbedu, a newcomer to American audiences, plays the lead role of Cora, while Chase W. Dillon, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Pierre, Lily Rabe, and The Good Place's William Jackson Harper also star.
The Woman in the Window MOVIE Trailer Drama/Thriller Netflix
Joe Wright directs Amy Adams in a Tracy Letts-scripted adaptation of A.J. Finn's novel, itself sort of (but unofficially) a variation of the Rear Window formula. Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, and Jennifer Jason Leigh also star. 20th Century Studios originally intended to release the film in theaters a few years ago, but it was delayed first by poor test screenings (it was subsequently re-edited) and then by the pandemic, and Netflix stepped in to secure the film's rights.

Christoph Waltz makes his directorial debut and stars as a wildly ambitious and truth-challenged Washington, D.C. social climber who will do anything to work his way into the political scene, including marrying a wealthy woman (Vanessa Redgrave) who is many decades his senior. Annette Bening also stars as the woman's disapproving daughter. The drama is based on a true story (as reported by Franklin Foer in the New York Times) that is adapted by Pulitzer-winning playwright David Auburn (Proof). Taylor Schilling and Audra McDonald star in a six-episode Spectrum Original from The Good Fight creators Robert and Michelle King about the second wave of a deadly pandemic. It's not quite as serious as it seems, however: It's a satire, and in this world, the pandemic causes a bit of zombie-ism.

With Disney+ becoming the new TV home for Marvel, Hulu canceled most of the Marvel projects it had in the pipeline (or already on the air). But a pair of animated series remain at the streaming service, and up first is M.O.D.O.K., short for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing, a large-headed, mid-tier supervillain facing difficulties in his professional and personal life voiced by Patton Oswalt. Oswalt is also a producer and co-creator of the series along with former Community writer Jordan Blum, so expect a comedic approach to the material—especially since the voice cast also features a number of comedic actors including Ben Schwartz, Sam Richardson, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Melissa Fumero, Beck Bennet, Jon Daly, Jon Hamm, Nathan Fillion, Bill Hader, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Master of None Trailer Comedy Netflix
Returning after a four-year hiatus, the Aziz Ansari- and Alan Yang-created comedy Master of None is one of Netflix's most critically acclaimed shows of all time, and has picked up numerous honors including three Emmy awards. One of those trophies came for a season 2 episode ("Thanksgiving") that centered not on Ansari's Dev but on his lesbian friend Denise (Lena Waithe), and it is the latter who will be the focus of this five-episode third season (subtitled "Moments in Love"), along with new co-star Naomi Ackie, who plays Denise's wife, Alicia. Blame the pandemic. When HBO Max launched exactly one year ago, they weren't there for you. But now the cast of the 1990s NBC hit Friends (which some of you may know as the 2010s Netflix hit Friends) has finally reunited to celebrate themselves (and collect a tidy $2.5 million paycheck in the process). Joining Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer in the special are an eclectic group of celebrity fans and Friends guest stars including Reese Witherspoon, Tom Selleck, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, David Beckham, Maggie Wheeler, James Corden, Elliott Gould, Mindy Kaling, Malala Yousafzai, and BTS. Don't worry: Gunther will be there too. (No word on Marcel, though.)

(Expect a slightly less comedic and more adult take, given the film's rare-for-Disney PG-13 rating.) Loki NEW Clip Trailer Drama/Comedy Disney+
It's been a few months since the last one, so it must be time for a new Marvel series. Tom Hiddleston brings his big-screen God of Mischief to Disney+ in a series that finds Loki popping up at key moments throughout human history, where he becomes an unlikely influencer on events. Expect a comedic approach, especially since the series comes from frequent Dan Harmon collaborator Michael Waldron, who has written for Rick and Morty and Community, and director Kate Herron, who is new to Marvel and has worked on shows such as Netflix's Sex Education. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Owen Wilson, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, and Sophia Di Martino also star. Like Disney's other Marvel shows, Loki is technically a miniseries—and just six episodes at that—but that doesn't mean there can't be a second season. Episodes stream weekly on Wednesdays.

The 10-episode satire comes from Annie Weisman (who has written for The Bold Type and Desperate Housewives, among other credits) and also stars Rory Scovel (as Sheila's politician husband), Dierdre Friel, Paul Sparks, and Lou Taylor Pucci. Already one of the best-reviewed films of 2021, the directorial debut from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson wowed (virtual) attendees at Sundance early this year, when the film swept the top documentary awards from the festival jury and audience members. It's a concert movie, featuring previously unseen footage from the Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969—footage that has been sitting in a basement for decades until now. Available to Disney+ subscribers for an additional rental fee on the same day as its theatrical release, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ends a nearly unprecedented two-year gap between Marvel movies. (The only other hiatus of a similar length ran from 2008 to 2010.) The focus here, obviously, is on Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow—though she's not the only Black Widow in the film, which finds Florence Pugh joining the MCU as Yelena Belova and Rachel Weisz possibly playing a third Black Widow (and also Iron Maiden/Melina Vostokoff). David Harbour (Stranger Things), O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid's Tale), and William Hurt also star for first-time Marvel director Cate Shortland (best known for her Australian indie drama Somersault).

Wellington Paranormal NEW Comedy CW 9p
Making its American debut three years after it first aired in New Zealand, this mockumentary-style TV series spinoff from the original What We Do in the Shadows film should appeal to fans of the hit FX TV show also based on that movie. Two of the movie's stars, Karen O’Leary and Michael Minogue, reprise their roles in Wellington as clueless cops who are members of their city's paranormal policing unit, and the series was created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, who were also responsible both for the film and its American TV spinoff. Two new episodes air back-to-back tonight, and all episodes will be available to stream on HBO Max the day after they air on The CW.

Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, Fred Armisen, and Jane Krakowski also star, while Martin Short guests.
Space Jam: A New Legacy MOVIE Trailer Animation/Comedy/Sci-fi HBO Max
This sequel to the 1996 cult classic (that may not be quite the right term) finds LeBron James stepping into the Air Jordans of, well, Michael Jordan, as he teams up with Bugs Bunny and other Warner Bros. animated characters to play a very important game of basketball. Don Cheadle, Zendaya, and Sonequa Martin-Green—as well as (W)NBA stars Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Diana Taurasi, Chris Paul, and Damian Lillard, among others—also star. Co-written by Ryan Coogler and directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip), the film begins a one-month run on HBO Max today concurrent with its theatrical release.
Turner & Hooch NEW Comedy/Drama Disney+
Disney's series adaptation of the 1989 feature film (not exactly one of Tom Hanks's better movies) stars Josh Peck as (human) U.S. Marshal Scott Turner—the son of Hanks' police detective character—and a handful of canine actors as Hooch, his dog partner. Hanks (obviously) doesn't return from the original, but Reginald VelJohnson does—his David Sutton has turned in his badge to become the Cypress Beach mayor.   Masters of the Universe: Revelation MINISERIES Animation Netflix
Picking up after the events of the 1980s syndicated animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the Netflix-exclusive Revelation comes from Kevin Smith—yes, the one you are thinking of. Naturally, Jason Mewes is in the cast, but so are Mark Hamill, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Chris Wood, Lena Heady, Stephen Root, Henry Rollins, Phil LaMarr, Diedrich Bader, and Alicia Silverstone. Dune MOVIE Trailer Sci-fi/Adventure HBO Max
NOTE: HBO Max release tentative; may ultimately be a theatrical exclusive. Can director Denis Villeneuve succeed where David Lynch could not? The director of Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival returns with his big-budget, highly-anticipated, and long-delayed (by covid) adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi epic, which Lynch previously tried to wrestle into a feature film in 1984 to less than spactular (though not uninteresting) results. Timothée Chalamet takes over the role of Paul Atreides originated by Kyle MacLachlan, while Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa and Stellan Skarsgård also star.
