Awesome game. Only flaws are the graphics should be better and also the fact that the consumable balls can change the green speed. At least be able to lock balls out of the competitive societies. It also **** that there is no leaderboard or a ranking system for online play. I would be happy with a leaderboard that resets every season. Or something along those lines... it would be a 10 if it wasn't for those two major gripes.
Solid game. Plenty of objectives to keep you interested and playing, from boosting your stats by choosing club fittings to play how you want - conservatively with an easier more forgiving swing , or go for distance with a less forging swing. There's a skill tree to upgrade what you want , and player architype to choose between being a short club game or driver game, up to you. Then there's the apparel to unlock and online play. Plenty to keep you interested. Solid golf game.
Triple A price tag for $20 worth of content. Gameplay mechanica are great. Player and equipment customization is very lacking. Sponsors system is broken and needs reworked.
It’s the best golf game on the market by virtue of being the only real golf game on the market. The gameplay is very good; almost too good as it has you just a frustrated at time as in real life!
Sadly they dropped the ball in many other areas: graphics and performance. Screen tearing and dropped frames on a PS5 for graphics that look decidedly last gen is pretty bad. Player models do not even resemble their real life counterparts. Visual customization of your player is a regression from last year‘s game.
THESE DEVS ARE LAZY AND GREEDY
I'm not even trying to be funny here- Hot Shots Golf, a ps1 game from 1997, is a better game that is way more fun to play. You can tell right away that the devs put no thought into this; the game feels lifeless. You can't even create your own character! I wanted to try out a new golf game cause I was getting nostalgiac about playing Hot Shots back in the early 2000's... well this game feels and looks old. The controls are so counter-intuitive that I ended up accidentally switching out my putter when I was on the green without even knowing, and smashing the ball 100 yards away, which ruined my first tournament of 'my career', and there's no restart or mulligans or anything, I have to continue from that terrible shot.
People spend a lot of time arguing over games, but like with any art form or entertainment, genre and tech aspects and such aren't as important as the simple question of whether the game pulls you in and is fun to play. This is not. It is frustrating for all the wrong reasons. There is nothing added here to make the player excited, unless you love having ads pop up constantly trying to get you to purchase hats and shirts and crap. Just pathetic. Even the people giving this an 8 or 9 all say "...but the graphics really do ****".
Thankfully I didn't pay a dime for this garbage, as it's free on ps+ right now.
This cash grab makes me want to get an ad-blocker for my PlayStation. Maybe there's a good game in there somewhere but I couldn't get past the stink of desperation on the home screen. As far as the gameplay I did experience before bleaching it off my SSD...
1. The graphics don't impress, character models look bad, and everything has a stock texture feel to it. Maybe it's time to move on from the Unity engine? I dunno... I just know I had to exit and make sure I was playing the PS5 version because I couldn't see any improvement over 2K21.
2. If you can sit through 5 minutes of the home screen without adjusting your audio settings, color me impressed. It's supposed to be a golf game, not an IMAX movie.
3. For the swing mechanics the game gives you 3 input methods to choose from. Though I appreciate these options, I would prefer an option to adjust the dead zone or sensitivity for the X-axis. As with 2K21 I felt stuck having to choose playability over challenge because the swing stick is so sensitive and feels wildly unpredictable. People are expected to play this with THUMBS, right? I don't recall the phrase "all thumbs" being a compliment to describe someone's deftness, precision or accuracy.
4. The ads. This brings me to why I can't go into a more detailed review. The ad experience is absolutely atrocious... pop-ups on the home screen, banner ads all over the place, and microtransactions looming behind every accidental button press. Companies like 2K want you to believe that they have to hawk their microtransactions in order to be competitive in the market. And yet, they are one of a small group of AAA publishers that actually do it. Plenty of AAA titles come out every year with little or no in-game purchases and they seem to be doing just fine. The way ads dominate the screen real estate cheapens the game experience worse than a "free with ads" mobile game.
I put off getting this game because of the lackluster reviews. I even went back to 2K21 to scratch that golf game itch while I waited for a sale. Imagine my excitement when it came up as one of the free PSN games for the month. Turns out I couldn't uninstall it fast enough.
